Day two of Epic Rides, Carson City Airport's Open House, and more: Events for Saturday, June 29

Good morning Carson City, and happy Saturday! It'll be a bit warmer than yesterday with a high of 86 and a low of 51, and you can expect a bit of a breeze with 13 mph winds.

There's a lot going on today in our beautiful Capital City, with day two of Epic Rides, the Carson City Airport Open House and Wing Cook-off, the farmer's market, a youth expo, and more.

Saturday, June 29

— Fourth annual Carson City Off-Road returns to Carson City. Rides start at 7:30 a.m. in downtown Carson City, 101 N. Carson St. Hosted by Epic Rides, the fourth annual Carson City Off-Road will cruise the local mountainsides and the streets of the capital city's downtown this Friday through Sunday. The event is slated for a record turnout. More than 900 riders have already registered with more expected to cruise by the state capital. All participants will ride their way into the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada all while soaking in the views of Lake Tahoe, Washoe Valley and Carson Valley. Both amateur and professionals will course through pieces of single track, double track, gravel and narrow roads and several historic streets in Carson City.

— Carson City Airport Open House. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway. The Carson City Airport, in partnership with the Eagle Valley Children’s Home, will host the 2019 Open House and Fly-In on Saturday, June 29, 2019 from 8:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. The event takes place at the Carson City Airport, 2600 College Parkway, Carson City, Nevada. Entry to the event is free to the public and draws thousands of visitors annually. Proceeds from new programming will benefit local non-profit, Eagle Valley Children's Home. New to 2019 is the addition of a Chicken Wing Cook-Off Challenge. All event proceeds from the challenge will support the Eagle Valley Children’s Home (a 501 (c) (3)), which is a fully accredited intermediate care facility for children requiring specialized care and treatment. Wings will be available for purchase and the Cook-Off Challenge will feature trophies for: the overall best wings, hottest wings, most original, and people’s choice awards. — Alta Alpina Challenge: Riding the Wild Sierra (all day). The Alta Alpina Cycling Club is pleased to offer a new concept in cycling events: Build Your Own Challenge. The idea is simple. Riders can choose among eight of the greatest mountain passes in the Carson Valley and Tahoe region. Just like a menu at a restaurant, cyclists can pick and choose whatever their particular appetite might be to challenge themselves. Distances range from 30-198 miles with 3,600-20,300 feet of climbing as part of the options. Do one pass, do them all, or mix it up. The beauty of this new approach is you can call your shots. Experience the world class cycling of Northern Sierra Nevada and the challenge of up to eight mountain passes in the setting of a personalized and supported ride.

— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Free Nevada Outdoor Experience Youth Expo. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Capitol City Gun Club, 3590 Arrowhead Dr. The Nevada Outdoor Experience is co-sponsored by the Wild Sheep Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The goal of the free event is to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts. Over 24 different outdoor organizations are coming together, each adding their unique perspective on the outdoors to the event, with the goal to excite and inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts. This year's event takes place on Saturday, June 29th from 9:00 to 1:00pm at Capitol City Gun Club (3590 Arrowhead Drive in Carson City, NV). Events include: archery, wildlife conservation, leave no trace ethics, trap and skeet, nature crafts, gold panning, metal detecting, rock climbing wall, nature crafts, free youth raffles, and so much more.

— Imaginations Children's June Art Class in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R. Street. There are so many creative ways to use colored pencils! Kids will have a great time learning the various techniques from St. Mary’s Art Center’s amazing instructor. Advanced registration: $25/student. Day of registration: $35/student. — Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. — Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F. St. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— U.S. Citizenship Study Classes. 10 a.m. at the Carson City Library. In collaboration with the ESL In-Home Program, the Carson City Library offers free citizenship classes. The 12 classes will help prepare participants for the Naturalization Test by providing information, guidance, and individual support. Classes start on May 4th, every Saturday from 10am-12pm on the second floor of the Carson City Library located at 900 N. Roop St.

— State Capitol Guided Tours at the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Guided walks of historic Genoa. 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. Mormon Station is located in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District, which encompasses over 25 structures and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk throughout a portion of the historic district. During the approximately one-mile round-trip walk, an interpreter will discuss the significance of the structures located along the route.

— Iron Rebels Car Show. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Shelton Racing and Fabrication, 3600 Challenger Way. Open to all makes, models and years. $10 entry fee, trophies presented at 3:00. Come on out and enjoy vendors, food, drinks, hourly raffle prizes and live music. Proceeds go to Relay for Life and The Cancer Society.

— 3D Flowers in 2D Vase Class at WNC. 1 to 3 p.m. at Western Nevada College. Come and join Rachael and Debbie Lambin of My Thousand Words this Saturday, June 29 as they teach you to make a beautiful flower vase that is both 3D as well as 2D. Students will make paper flowers (3D) and paint a vase to put them in on a canvas lots of fun! The event is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Western Nevada College's Carson City campus, second floor of the Aspen Building. Debbie and Rachael are the 2019 Artown book artists for 31 days of exciting entertainment in No. Nevada. Check out artown.org.

— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

— Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City to host Membership Drive BBQ. 1 to 4 p.m. Jimmy G’s, 301 N. Carson St. New members are welcome and current members are encouraged to attend and renew their annual membership. Cost is $20 per person. Drawings will be held throughout the barbecue. Tickets are 6 for $5; winners must be present to win. Donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of the food, which will be grilled by one of the club's grill masters. Side dishes are welcomed by those who are attending. Jimmy G's will offer drink specials for the event.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Toast of the Canyon Train. 5 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Siding Rd. in Virginia City. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for a date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sound of the train whistle. The experience is complete when the “Iron Horse” steams by the passenger cars to reattach to the train to pull it back up out of the canyon.

— Wild Horse Theater presents Disney's Newsies. Showings at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! — Levitt AMP Carson City: Jordan T presented by the Change Companies. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center: The Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King St. Jordan T’s musical career began in Maui, where he had formed a local band and was soon given the call to play guitar for touring reggae bands like Maoli and Katchafire. With the help of fans, Jordan T was able to fund his debut album “Bridges with the Vibes” in 2017. With a surplus he and his fans raised, Jordan T contacted Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua and aided in building houses for those in need. Jordan’s popularity is steadily growing—with over 2.5 million streams on Spotify alone—and he has shared the stage with many other musicians in reggae festivals and concerts all across the globe.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the McFadden Plaza, 310 S. Carson St. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

— Canyon White Band to play at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. 7 to 9 p.m. at 1500 Old Hot Springs Rd. The Canyon White Band will be at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint for Sassafras Live Music & Events on June 29th, 2019. Come on down for fabulous food and fun!

— Keller Williams and the Hillbenders to headline 2019 Carson City Off-Road. 7 p.m. Epic Rides announced Tuesday that Keller Williams and the Hillbenders are the Saturday evening headlining act at the Four Peaks Brewing Concert Series during the Carson City Off-Road mountain bike event on June 28-30, 2019. Hailing from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Williams combines elements of folk, rock, bluegrass, reggae, jazz, and funk to create a sound all his own. Known for his exploits as a 'one-man band', playing multiple instruments simultaneously, Williams has also collaborated with numerous bands over the years including String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee and the Yonder Mountain String Band and has been a regular performer at music festivals like Bonnaroo. Paying homage to one of the greatest rock musicians in American history, Williams and the Hillbenders will take the stage on Saturday, June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Off-Road, performing a full show of songs by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

— Uncle Kracker in concert at TJ's Corral. 8 p.m. at 1627 U.S. Hwy. 395 in Minden, NV. Carson Valley Inn Casino presents Uncle Kracker live in concert under the stars at TJ’s Corral on Saturday June 29th at 8pm. — Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. William St. For a delightful concert experience join Tintabulations for their 2019 concert presentation: “Every Time A Bell Rings” featuring stories about mythology, superstitions and traditions. All concerts are free, donations are accepted.
