This Saturday is all about film appreciation around the area. The Carson City International Film Festival wraps up today inside the newly renovated Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, while the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival occurs at CVIC Hall in Minden.

There is even a Family Movie Night inside the Carson Mall Saturday.

But don't spend all day indoors. Saturday weather is forecast to be mostly sunny with a high around 42 degrees. It precedes several days of precipitation starting Sunday.

2019 Year of the Pig Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco, CA, featuring Carson High School's Blue Thunder Marching Band.

Muscle Powered Saturday snowshoe hike to Clear Creek Connector Trail, 8 a.m. lease join us for a five-mile round-trip snowshoe trek in the Clear Creek watershed area just three miles west of Carson City! We will hike on the Clear Creek Connector Trail that intersects with the longer Clear Creek Trail. Both trails built by Carson Valley Trails Association. Meet 8:00 am at Hwy 50 Park-and-ride just west of Hwy 50/US395 interchange. We will carpool three miles to the Golf Course Drive parking area near the trailhead. Dogs are not allowed on this hike. Hackathon, Jr., at Riverview Elementary School in Dayton, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ackathon Jr is coming to Dayton, Nevada in February 2019. Hackathon Jr. is pleased to announce the opportunity for students in the surrounding communities of Lyon County to participate in a Hackathon Jr. event at Riverview Elementary on February 23, 2019.

Skate Jam 6, sponsored by The Wheel House of Carson City, 12 p.m. to midnight at Jub Jub's Thirst Parlor, 71 S. Wells Avenue in Reno. All ages welcome. Event features skating, music and food.

— Presentation of new historic display commemorating the Nevada Children's Home, 1 p.m. inside the Carriage House at the Foreman-Roberts House, 1207 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Member program and presentation in the Carriage House: Bonnie Nishikawa and Girl Scout troop 1951 will be offering a program and new exhibit on the Nevada Children’s Home. This local Girl Scout troop is working on their Silver Award, the second highest award a Girl Scout can earn, and have created a special display and exhibit for CCHS honoring the memory of the Children’s Home in Carson City. Come see and hear what they have done! We will also hold a short business meeting for members. Refreshments will be served.

Day 3 of the Carson City International Film Festival. Those who attend the sixth annual International Film Weekend in Carson City, which began Thursday, will get a glimpse into some of Nevada’s hidden treasures, as well as a look at cultures around the world. “We hope people will see how we are all the same, underneath,” said chairwoman Linda Bellegray. “Our humanity is universal.” The festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday, will show feature-length foreign films Friday, as well as independent documentaries from students from 3-5 p.m. Bob Boldrick Theater, Carson City Community Center, 851 E. Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners reception, 2-4 p.m. at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street in Carson City. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.

Tahoe Adventure Film Festival, CVIC Hall at 1604 Esmeralda Avenue in Minden. Doors open at 6 p.m. and show starts at 7 p.m. The Douglas High School Interact Club is bringing the Tahoe Adventure Film Festival to the Carson Valley. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and are available at the door. Refreshments will be available for purchase and a raffle will be held. The Tahoe Adventure Film Festival is a fast-paced, high-energy evening of highlights from the best adventure sports films of the year.

— Casino Boss and Friends Comedy Show featured at the Carson Nugget. 8 p.m. Join the Carson Nugget Saturday, Feb. 23 for Casino Boss and Friends at the Carson Comedy Club. Comedians Bob Zany, Howie Nave and Cameron Crain will be taking over the stage for an hour of laughter. The Carson Nugget is located at 507 N Carson St. Doors open up at 7:15 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Go here for more information and where to buy tickets.

ONGOING:

Chinese woodcutters exhibit debuts at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.

Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners announced, Carson City reception on Feb. 23. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 see all the submitted pieces. The public is also invited to attend the Winter Show artists reception and awards presentation on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2 to 4 p.m. at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.

Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.

Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.

The Carson City Planning Commission meeting will be held Wednesday, April 24 in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William St. at 5 p.m.

Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center and Wildcat Veterans Club invite the community to participate in a Walk for Hope on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.

Carson City’s Community Development Director Hope Sullivan will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.

On Sunday, May 5 head down to the Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park for a fun tournament-style round of Cinco de Mayo Disc Golf beginning at 10 a.m. Rain or Shine, the round will include both the Pony Express and Stadium Courses for a total of 27 holes.
