Carson City’s Wheel House to sponsor family-friendly Skate Jam 6
For the sixth year in a row, music and skating will be brought to Reno in an all day, all ages party and skate competition. This year, Carson City’s own Wheel House will be sponsoring the event along with Suffix Skateboarding.
The event will be held at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor in Reno, located at 71 S. Wells Avenue, from noon to midnight.
“We’ve been involved in the community for a while doing different events, and in the skate scene this has been going on for six years,” said co-owner of the Wheelhouse Teak Dopf. “Wheel House has been open for five years, so we were always aware of the event going on and we’ve participated in the past with some of our riders.”
“In skateboarding there’s a culture that could be considered seedy, but we’ve tried to bridge the gap, and Skate Jam has as well, to have competitions like this to change that conceived idea,” said Dopf.
Wheel House has been focused on getting kids skating since the beginning. Growing up in Carson City, said Dopf, he and co-owner Matt Bartak didn’t have a lot of places to skate. They built a half pipe in a garage and focused on eating right, working out, and, of course, skating.
Now they want to engage kids in the community from a young age in skating in a safe environment where they can learn from professionals and older peers.
Currently, the Wheel House is also offering training for children in skating, balance, focus, core strength, and confidence in their Carson City shop.
They’ll also be providing prizes for the Skate Jam 6 Competition.
The first competition will be the Gromtest, the youth division skating contest from 1:20 to 2:10, and the second will be the Skate Contest from 4:20 to 5:30.
All kids under 18 must wear a helmet and have a parent or guardian sign a waver, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian if they intend to be in and out.
In addition to skating, there will also be 12 bands playing, which scheduled along with the contests as followed:
Noon-12:25pm, Grimedog
