Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Despite snow on the ground, a Chinese New Year celebration will take place in downtown Carson City between the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada.
The ninth annual Carson High School Safe Grad Safe and Sober Run/Walk occurs at the CHS track.
And the 20th annual Feast of Chocolate, a scholarship fundraiser for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Capital Branch, is being held at the Plaza Hotel Event Center.

The event is free for members. Daily admission will apply for all non-member guests.

I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Whether it’s the International Film Festival, the Vagina Monologues, or telescope viewing at the WNC Observatory: you can’t tell me there is nothing to do.

Apparently it’s considered unlucky, but only if you were born in the year of the Monkey yourself. This is a year when anything can happen. Spend the day enjoying something beautiful. The Nevada Artist Association Gallery at the Brewery Art Center will be changing its exhibit at the end of the week, so go take a last peek at what’s on display.

Time to reunite with family and loved ones and celebrate spring. New York City got in on the festivities with its first ever fireworks display for the Lunar New Year; I've included a YouTube video, just in case fireworks really are lucky.
The Pizza Factory on Hwy 50 East is holding a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School today. 20% of the day’s proceeds will benefit their Parent Teacher Organization.

Designed to create an opportunity for artists to engage with community members and people working in or visiting the Nevada State Legislative Building, the presentations are at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 24, March 19 and 30, April 17 and May 7. All are free and open to the public in Room 3100.
Traditional Chinese dance, music and storytelling at Brewery Arts Center
Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/11/2014 - 7:32amCelebrate the Chinese New Year at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center Feb. 8. 2 p.m. with traditional Chinese dance featuring Nevada Arts Council artist Xian Na Carlson.
Xian Na Carlson began learning folk dances as a child growing up in Zhangzhou, China. From her aunt she learned the Tuan Shan, (fan dance), the Xin Jiang regional dance and Tai Ji forms.
