— Sierra Lutheran High School 7th & 8th Grade Visitation Day, 9 a.m. Sierra Lutheran High School will host its annual 7th & 8th Grade Visitation Day today from 9 a.m. to noon. The event, which is free to all 7th and 8th graders across the five county area, is carefully designed to give students a multi-dimensional look into what has made Sierra Lutheran one of the top high schools in the region. The schedule of events includes a campus tour, interactive academic and college planning sessions, a comprehensive look at SLHS campus life and extra curricular activities, pep rally, and lunch. — Tuesday Morning Walk to Linear Ditch Trail, East hosted by Muscle Powered, 9 a.m. Come and join Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet at Moffat Open Space parking area on Hells Bells Road and Parkhill Drive. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.

Carson City area Salvation Army hosts free estate planning seminar, 11:30 a.m. Local accredited estate planning attorney, Cedric W. Anderson, and Salvation Army gift planning director, Mitch McConkey, will lead the discussion, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A free lunch will be provided to all attendees. The seminar will be held at the Carson City Corps Community Center, 911 East 2nd Street, Carson City.

Fundraiser for cancer patient Susie Bongers, 5 p.m. to closing at Pizza Factory. Susie Bongers of Carson City who works with her mother and sister at MJ Beauty Salon, has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme. Over the next two days there will be fundraisers for her, the first at Pizza Factory and the second, on Wednesday, at Firehouse Subs. The generous owners of both Pizza Factory and Fire House Subs will hold fundraising events to help the family raise money to pay for medical bills. Both restaurants are located at 3120 Highway 50 East in Carson City.

Tuesday Evening Conditioning Hike to Longview Canyon Trail, Lincoln Bypass hosted by Muscle Powered, 5:30 p.m. Come out and join Muscle Powered for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the dirt parking Meet opposite Longview Way on Kings Canyon Road. Bring a flashlight. Water and sturdy boots or athletic shoes required. Hikes are 4-6 miles in length with an elevation gain, sometimes over 500 feet and usually on single track trail. Evening hikes are usually 1½ hours or more duration.

Arts Council in Carson City hosts reception, artist talk with Donald Corpier Starr, 5:30 p.m. The Nevada Arts Council will host a free reception and artist talk with Las Vegas artist Donald Corpier Starr on Tuesday, Oct. 9. An exhibit of Starr’s artwork is on display at the Arts Council’s OXS gallery through Nov. 9. The reception starts at 5:30 p.m. with the artist talk scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. at the Nevada Arts Council, 716 N. Carson St., Suite A, in Carson City.

League of Women Voters Election Forum. Forum begins at 6 p.m. The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital (NV) Branch, PFLAG Carson Region, Partnership Carson City, and Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition present the second in a series of election forums. Tuesday's forum will focus on statewide constitutional officer candidates including Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Controller, and Attorney General have been invited. — Town Hall Tuesdays with the Candidates, 6 p.m. Town Hall Tuesdays with Tina Davis-Hersey, candidate for Nevada Senate District 16, and special guest candidates weekly. Come to beautiful downtown Carson and talk about what matters to you in this very important election. 700 West Telegraph Street.

— Citizens' Climate Lobby, Carson City Chapter Monthly Meeting, 6:30 p.m. The Carson City Chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby meets the first Tuesday of every month to work on issues and solutions to climate change. We are focused on a non-partisan approach to creating a practical and needed fee on fossil fuels. Details about this proposal are available at citizensclimatelobby.org. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program is hosting a winter coat drive Oct. 1 through Nov. 2, 2018. Please donate new or gently used, clean coats, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be distributed to families in need on Nov. 8, 2018 at 2310 South Carson St. Suite 1 Carson City or the Douglas County Washoe Tribe of NV & CA Native TANF Program office, 1248 Waterloo Ln, Gardnerville.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. — Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City. The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Nevada Artists Association opens Carson City Autumn art show. The Nevada Artists Association opened its annual "Autumn" exhibit will run through Oct. 19, 2018. More than 100 local and regional artists make up the non-profit NAA which operates the gallery located at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. In addition to the Autumn Show, two association members will be featured, with art work displayed on the coveted back wall of the gallery, artist Cindy Whitaker and photographer Fred Howland will be exhibiting their finest. Mile High Jazz Band with Jakki Ford featured Oct. 9 at Carson City's Living the Good Life, 7:30 p.m. Enjoy an evening of big-band music with vocalist Jakki Ford on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Admission is free and donations are greatly appreciated. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. The program, Autumn Big-band Jazz, presents the 17-member Mile High Jazz Band playing favorite and new big-band songs. The concert celebrates Harmony for Humanity as part of World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.

The Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce nine student winners of the 23rd Annual American Citizen Essay Contest. Each winner was recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday, Nov. 12, and received the following cash prizes: First Place: $100, Second Place: $50 and Third Place: $30. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) newest transformation product is now available in all Northern Nevada offices. Customers can now register their vehicle online through Rapid Registration by going here.

UPDATE: Due to increased fire weather conditions, NV Energy has upgraded a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch to Warning status in Genoa, southwestern Carson City and Virginia City Highlands in northern Nevada for today, Nov. 13 and into tomorrow morning.
A PSOM warning means a de-energization is likely to prevent the possibility of sparking a wildfire.

A storm expected to move into the region Wednesday has prompted NV Energy to issue a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for southwest Carson City to Genoa and the Virginia City Highlands.

With the passing of Chef Charlie Abowd, Saturday, the food drive he and Steve Funk, KNVC 95.1 FM Radio's general manager, kicked off Nov. 9, has been renamed the KNVC and Chef Charlie Abowd Memorial Turkey Drop Food Drive. The event will take place annually.

CARSON CITY — A new paper co-authored by Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) team members showcases pioneering research into the integration of technology and workforce training in Nevada.

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team Fall Prescribed Fire Program continues for the next two weeks on Lake Tahoe’s eastern and southern shores, conditions and weather permitting.

UPDATE: NV Energy has de-activated approximately 5,500 electricity customers in Washoe County in the area of the fire at Callahan Ranch.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

The Carson City School District is proud to recognize Carson City Toyota as its November Community Partner of the Month as a Legacy Level partner, the highest level, for their ongoing commitment to supporting local schools and for their generous financial and in-kind contributions to enhance the educational experience for students in Carson City for more than 25 years.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
