The Sierra Nevada Forums, in partnership with the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada will host UNR Innovative Research and Medical Breakthroughs on September 19 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W King St in Carson City.

Climate change: Is it real? Yes! Is there something that you can do? Yes! A few years ago I became more aware and concerned about our environment. My concern was elevated based upon what I was reading, hearing and witnessing.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Fall-themed train rides from the Virginia Truckee Railroad Company and the Nevada State Railroad Museum will be available on Saturday and Sunday. A virtual “Light After Dark” fitness event will be held on Saturday to support the Carson City-based Advocated to End Domestic Violence program. Sierra Nevada Forums presents Single Payer Medicare for All.

What is it? Where did it start? What does it look like in other countries around the world? Why would we want medicare for all in the U.S.? How would we pay for medicare for all? How would it effect our hospitals and doctors? What about our personal health choices?

These and many other questions will be discussed at the free forum on February 12, at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

Sierra Nevada Forums will be hosting a discussion on behavioral health and the criminal justice system in a January 8 forum.

"Carson City has been at the forefront in developing innovative programs focused on diverting individuals with mental illness and substance use problems from the criminal justice system," said a Forums spokesperson. "Community leaders will discuss how these strategic interventions have assisted struggling individuals while also reducing costs to the community."

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

It’s Bike Month in Carson City, and the ladies’ Tuesday bike ride up Ash Canyon has returned for the season. You’ll need a helmet and a trail-ready bike if you’d like to join in. TUESDAY, May 8: Things to do in Carson City

Sierra Nevada Forums will present "The Internet of Things" this Tuesday at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall in Carson City. This is an opportunity to learn about some of the latest ideas for uses of computers, smart devices and robots. But will this new technology " disrupt" lives? If it does, is this a good or bad thing?

Congratulations go out to the Mile High Jazz Band; they’ll be celebrating 17 years of monthly performances during tonight’s gig at Living the Good Life. If you’d like to learn more about drones, those little flying robots, then tonight’s installment of the Sierra Nevada Forum is for you. They’ll be covering the versatility of drones, and fully expect you to be surprised. Chili’s Restaurant welcomes Mother-son duos for a night of quality time. Super-hero costumes are encouraged, and bring a camera, Darth Vader will be there for pictures.

TUESDAY, April 10: Things to do in Carson City

As the days get longer and warmer, it’s worth it to check out the many trails and paths throughout the valley. Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.
