These are the final days of CV Sertoma's annual coat drive. You still have time to clear out your closets and bring your new or gently used coats, jackets, sweaters, blankets, hats, mittens and gloves, and scarves -- and new socks -- to one of our blue barrel locations in Douglas County and Carson City.

Earlier this month, another great Campagni Cares recipient was selected: the For Kids Foundation, assisting children from birth through age 20, in Northern Nevada.

The Sertoma Coat Drive is in full operation for its fourth year of collecting and distributing clothing to the people in the community who are without warm outerwear. With 19 blue barrels in Carson Valley and 7 in Carson City, everyone who wants to donate new and gently used coats, blankets, and warm outerwear is finding a donation spot.

The Carson Nugget and Food For Thought, a Carson city nonprofit that is dedicated to feeding children in need, teamed up this fall and launched a winter coat drive that culminated Monday where dozens of children were able to pick their new jackets and parkas and enjoy a holiday brunch among friends and family.

On Monday, Dec. 23, more than 130 Carson City children in transition will receive a brand new coat, a gift and a holiday brunch, thanks to the efforts of Food for Thought, a Carson City-based non-profit dedicated to feeding children, and the generosity of the Carson City Nugget Casino Hotel.

The American Citizen Essay winners are in, and they all have one thing in common: cash prizes. This year, the Carson City School District Board of Trustees selected the topic, “An early motto of the United States was e pluribus unum, which means ‘out of many, one,’ so how do we embrace diversity and inclusiveness to come together as one country?”

Even though valley rain and Sierra snow happen this time of year, we're in for a brief change after going weeks without any precipitation. Enjoy the changeup. Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. Other events around the capital city include a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training graduation ceremony, a talk about earthquake preparedness hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more.

While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. Local events Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 include an Eagle Valley Middle School expansion plan community meeting, "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a Little Valley fire re-seeding gathering, a Toys for Tots volunteer orientation meeting, art showings, classes and more.

Heading into Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019 activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Leave No Trace hike and, later, a full moon hike hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec, a Carson City School District board meeting, the monthly gathering of the Carson Fly Fishing Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Everyone in Carson City is invited, always invited, to come on out and support the CHS athletic teams and programs, especially when so many of these individuals and teams have been so successful. A great many athletic events are happening this week and beyond with regional competitions in soccer, and state competitions in tennis and cross country.

The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. Events ahead for this Thursday include a regular meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Mammovan stop at Nevada Health Centers, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, and an evening with local artist Rebecca Fox at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. Settling into the week as we head into Tuesday, Nov. 5, activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Salvation Army holiday job fair, plus a grant workshop through the Nevada Arts Council, an evening showing of the 1951 film "An American in Paris" hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

A warmup is in the forecast this week as we head into Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Expect sunny skies with daytime highs in the upper 60s. But you'll want to bundle up after the sun sets as night time temperatures will be in the low 30s. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with Nevada Appeal columnist Guy Farmer, the first of free Monday yoga classes offered through Partnership Carson City, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

The 2019 season for CHS girls golf was a great experience for everyone on the team. This year, the team was comprised of five girls: Karen Beglin, Sophia Taggart, Karrina Ferris, Brooke Gudmundson, myself, and our coaches, Wade Greenlee and Jack Butler.

Going into the eve of Halloween, teeth will be chattering as the weather calls for sunny skies but with a chill in the air and daytime temperatures in the upper 40s around the capital city. Events around town Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 include a Halloween costume walk at Riverview Park in Carson City, a "trick or trunk" event in Dayton, art showings, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

With the wildly festive Nevada Day weekend now behind us, a busy week is ahead as we begin to close out October and prepare to celebrate Halloween in the capital city. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with the director of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

Counting down the hours until the Nevada Day weekend celebration begins, we're heading into Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 with sunny skies in the forecast through Sunday. Thursday opens the first of the four-day annual RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park with $1 ride family night hosted by Carson City Toyota. Other activities around the capital city include a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, art showings, library activities, a gold and silver rush presentation at the Nevada State Museum and more.

We're days away from our celebration of statehood and the weather around the capital city couldn't be more, well, Nevada-like with daytime highs near 70 and sunny skies. Carson City area activities ahead for Wednesday, Oct. 23 feature an economic roundup presented by the Northern Nevada Development Authority at Casino Fandango, Carson Tahoe's annual "Spooktacular" family event, Firehouse Subs will host our local Search and Rescue for a dinner fundraiser; Sierra Nevada Journeys and Nature Conservancy will present family STEM night in Genoa, plus art showings and more. New coats and jackets are in needed and are being collected for the McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program run through the Carson City School District.

Going into Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019 more sunny skies and warm fall temperatures will continue to shine on the capital city as we prepare for the Nevada Day weekend. Going into the final stretch of the work week Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019 will bring cool conditions, a slight chance of rain and some sunshine. While haze from nearby Sierra fires may linger some, we're looking at another pleasant fall day around the capital city heading into Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019. Events locally include a ribbon cutting and outdoor moving showing at the new Schulz Ranch Park, workshops, a women's safety meeting, a pumpkin patch for kids at Carson Mall, plus art showings and public talks.
