I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: March 10 – 11

This weekend may feel like it goes by a little quicker than usual, and it’s not your imagination. In the wee hours of Sunday morning we spring forward into Daylight Savings Time. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is teaming up with NDOT and the Head Injury Association of N. NV for a Brain Safety Day and free bicycle helmet giveaway. Join up with our Parks and Recreation Department for a guided walk at Riverview Park. The Experimental Aircraft Association is holding a Young Eagles event today, so if your kid loves airplanes, you won’t want to miss it. Continue reading for all that Carson City and her surrounding valleys have to offer.

SATURDAY:

• — Young Eagle Flights with EAA Sierra Chapter #403 at the Carson City Airport (Weather Permitting; Registration 7:30am-8am at the Airport Terminal Building, orientation begins at 8:30am – DO NOT BE LATE; open to ages 8-17; First-time Registration Forms are available at the event; The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 – 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge)
• — Breakfast and Bowling at Carson Lanes (9am-12pm breakfast and unlimited bowling; $13, $8 for kids 8 and younger)
• — ‘Second Hand Lil’ Boutique Shopping Event at the Elks Club: 515 N. Carson St. (9am-3pm; Featuring gently-used shoes, formal wear, accessories, jewelry and other items; sponsored by the Carson City Emblem’s Club)
• — Annual Spring Craft Fair and Bake Sale at the Dayton Senior Center: 320 Old Dayton Valley Rd, Dayton (9am-2pm; All money received goes to the March for Meals campaign that helps fund the meals on wheels program in Dayton, Moundhouse, and Silver City)
• — Spring Book Sale at the Dayton Valley Branch Library: 321 Old Dayton Valley Rd, Dayton (9am-4pm; hosted by the Friends of the Dayton Valley Library)
• — The Metropolitan Opera: Semiramide at Galaxy Theater- Fandango (9:55am; $20)
• — In-person Ticket Sales for ‘Under the Sea Father-Daughter Ball’ in the gym foyer at Carson High School (9am-12pm; $40 for father/daughter couple, $10 for each additional daughter; Only cash and checks are accepted; the dance is on April 6; email agolik@carson.k12.nv.us for more information; tickets available online HERE)

The annual Carson High Father Daughter Ball is just a few weeks away, so you’ll want to get tickets soon. Save yourself the internet fees by picking them up in person at Carson High, in the foyer by the Gymnasium.

• — Brain Safety Day: Bicycle Helmet Giveaway at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada (10am-12pm; muscle-powered transportation encouraged; co-sponsored by the Head Injury Association of Northern NV and NV Department of Transportation; museum admission: $6 ages 16-64, $4 ages 2-15, $5 seniors 65+, free for those 1 and younger)
• — Watershed Walk Guided Hike – Meet at Riverview Park at the far east end of Fifth Street (10am-11:30am; Join a Park Ranger for a guided hike at Riverview Park to learn about the habitat along the Carson River, your drinking water, and the Carson Watershed; hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation)
• — Half-off Everything at the Carson City Senior Center Thrift Shop: 911 Beverly Drive (10am-3:30pm; includes Boutique and Furniture; books are not included; benefits the Meals on Wheels Program)
• — Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)
• — Informational Presentation by Care Flight and Air Med at Blaqk Coffee: 655 Hwy 50 #5, Dayton (10am-2pm; learn about the helicopter ambulance subscriptions that are available in rural Nevada; rescheduled from March 3)
• — Sewing Certification Class: Sewing Machine Operation at the Carson City Library (10am-4pm; no registration required, drop-ins welcome; A proctor will teach participants the basics of how to use the library's sewing machines, and evaluate the participant's ability to use the machine correctly and successfully; This certification is required before participating in any Makerspace sewing workshops. This includes those experienced with sewing)
• — Family Story time and Craft at the Carson City Library (10:15am-11:45am; supplies limited MUST register online HERE; Each family will receive a free library bag and free book. Each child that is registered will get to participate in an art or science activity; those 9 and younger must be accompanied by someone 13+; You must have a library card in good standing to participate)

• — Auditions for PPI’s production of ‘The Hit’ by Mike Buckley in the Brewery Arts Center Grand Ballroom (10am; casting for three men and two women; cold readings on site)

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS 2AM SUNDAY MORNING: SPRING FORWARD ONE HOUR

You may not feel the effects of losing an hour today, you can always sleep in a little, but tomorrow that missing hour might be much more noticeable. Blushing brides-to-be will want to make it to the Bridal Expo at the Carson Mall; you’ll learn about local vendors, venues, and everything you’ll need for your special day. The Elks Club turns 150 this year and the Carson City club is celebrating with an open house. Swing by, say hello, and learn more about what this great organization does for the community. Local vocalist, Grace Hayes, is competing on American Idol. Cheer her on tonight at the Espresso Yourself Café in the Brewery Arts Center, and hope she makes it safely to the next round.

• — Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride - Meet in the south parking lot of Fremont Elementary School, next to the Linear Ditch Trail (NEW TIME: meet at 10am; consists of two loops 10-15 miles long each, this will allow a rider to do 10-15 miles or 20-30 miles – this is a ‘no drop’ ride so no one is left behind; ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but usually about 12-16 mph; All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, helmet, and closed toed shoes.
