Book Sale

The Silver City Volunteer Library is hosting its First Annual Book Sale. The group runs a community library inside the historic Silver City School House and has a huge selection of wonderful books to choose from. Some categories of books for sale are: children's books, fiction, biography, history, art books, DIY, field guides, cook books and collectibles. There will also be a bake sale featuring goodies from some notable local bakers!

Friends of the Carson City Library will be hosting a book sale this Saturday, Dec. 5 at Browsers Corner Book Store located at 711 E Washington St. from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Though no one knows for sure who said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”, CHS teacher and Air Force veteran Tod Jennings, in his respectfully fun and playful manner, challenged CHS teacher and Navy veteran Daniel Ingram to a bet.

Kelly Gustafson, a Carson High School Health Science teacher and HOSA adviser in the Career and Technical Education Department at CHS, provides this week's news regarding a health career competition. She reports the following:

Tomorrow is the big day, but today offers a sneak preview if you’re willing to drive a little. Every year the town of Kings Beach, on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, gets a head start on the festivities with a July Third Beach Bash and Fireworks Show. The Dayton Senior Center celebrates the holiday today with a BBQ, Cake Walk, BBQ and activities for all ages. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada gets in the patriotic swing during this week’s Storytime Adventure program: the Fourth of July is today’s theme.

TUESDAY, July 3: Things to do in Carson City

If you didn’t take advantage of early voting, then today is the day to cast that Primary ballot. The local library can be your best friend during summer vacation; Carson City celebrated the kick-off to their summer program on Sunday, while the library in Minden will host a party this evening to get the summer events started. The State Library and Archives have started a new lunchtime program. Join them for Archives Appetizer, a monthly speaker program that will cover different topics of Nevada History. Muscle Powered features two guided hikes on Tuesdays.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. Annual F.A.I.T.H. Homeschoolers Curriculum Sale and Clothing Exchange will be held May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Hilltop Community Church, 3588 Romans Road in Carson City.

The public is invited. Those attending can:
- Browse through curriculum.
- Ask questions about homeschooling.
- Receive curriculum and resources at 50-90 percent discount.
- Bring or take items from the FREE table.
- Clothing Exchange: Bring your gently used children’s clothing, and/or take home clothing for your own children!

This weekend may feel like it goes by a little quicker than usual, and it’s not your imagination. In the wee hours of Sunday morning we spring forward into Daylight Savings Time. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is teaming up with NDOT and the Head Injury Association of N. NV for a Brain Safety Day and free bicycle helmet giveaway. Join up with our Parks and Recreation Department for a guided walk at Riverview Park. The Experimental Aircraft Association is holding a Young Eagles event today, so if your kid loves airplanes, you won’t want to miss it.

The week winds down, but the happenings in Carson City are gearing up. Kids are going to have a fun time at the Carson Montessori Carnival Night. Help Relay for Life kick-off this year’s theme during their ‘Surfing for a Cure’ Luau at the Casino Fandango; you’ll have the opportunity to sign up your team, as well. No whining allowed, just fun times, at the Governor’s Mansion during tonight’s 'Let’s Wine Together' silent auction and wine fundraiser for the Carson High Band program.

Join us for the Dayton Valley Branch Library book sale on Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10, 2018 at the Dayton Valley Branch Library at 321 Old Dayton Valley Road (across from the Junior High school). The sale will open at 9:00 AM on Friday and close at 5:00 PM. Saturday hours are 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

There will be a large inventory of donated books available for sale. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Dayton Valley Branch Library. All proceeds benefit the local branch library and the Lyon County Library System as a whole.

Happy Thursday, Carson City. Today has plenty to offer, it just depends on what you’re in the mood for. Meet local author, Mark S. Bacon, at Browsers Corner Book Store; he’ll be signing copies of his newest book and share some insight into the writing process. Artist Andreana Donahue will make an appearance in the OXS Gallery at the Nevada Arts Council during a reception to honor her exhibit, Wintering Over. The Carson Victory Rollers are looking for new members of their roller derby team.

A momentous congratulations goes out to the students who voluntarily and competitively placed in the 2017 Carson City School Board Sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest with first place at the high school level going to CHS 9th grade Honors English student Marissa Messmann, second place to CHS 12th grade College Readiness Senior English student Jessica Preston, and third place going to 9th grade Honors English student Matteas Klatt.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. Welcome back to the weekend, readers. Halloween stuff is plentiful (go HERE for a complete list of upcoming activities), pumpkins are patched, the ghosts are walking, and there are loads of events to keep you, your friends and family entertained. Autumn is coming. It seems our days of 80+ degree weather is over, but so are rainy days we’ve seen this week. The Carson Aquatic Center welcomes everyone to a ‘Dive-in Movie’ on their new LED screen: Finding Nemo is a perfect flick for the whole family. Funnyman Adam Stone headlines this week’s Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget for those needing a good laugh. The Carson Area Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will gather to honor those who have given their all and have yet to come home during a POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds.

You’ll see some pretty interesting vehicles on the road these next few days, as travelers from all over head to Burning Man. If you aren’t off to the Playa yourself, there will be plenty of fun around town to keep you and your family occupied. The second annual Family Fun Day in Mills Park is your best bet for kids of all ages. This week’s free concert at Brewery Arts Center features the Dusty Green Bones. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; they’re sure to keep you on your feet.

It won’t be lions, and tigers, and bears taking over Fuji Park; the Carson City Fair is more about bunnies, alpacas, pigs and chickens. It begins today with a 4-H dog show focusing on obedience and rally. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday for the carnival, but you’ll be rewarded for your patience with one dollar rides opening night, courtesy of Carson City Toyota. If you happened to be awake during the wee hours of the morning, you may have heard some thunder rattling about – there may be a little more of that on its way.

MONDAY:

As the thermometer approaches 90, remind yourself that snow fell a few weeks ago and the heat is well overdue. We bypassed spring and lept right into summer. Enjoy a bluesy morning in Silver City as local musician, Mylo McCormick, takes the stage for a free acoustic concert. Bad man, John Wayne, tussles with an angel at tonight’s Classic Cinema Club offering at the Brewery Arts Center. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a friend on today’s Conditioning Hike up Goni with Muscle Powered.

Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. I’m not trying to rush you, but the holidays season approaches. As such, the holiday craft fairs, bazaars, and bake sales have arrived. You may as well start looking at that gift list to see who would enjoy something one-of-a-kind and locally crafted. If not for gift giving, these fairs are an excellent way to find fun ways to decorate your home. Other than that, the weekend is kind of quiet, but you'll want take a look at the list and see what catches your fancy.
