It took just one call from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and Carson City Department of Health and Human Services to Tod Colegrove, PhD, MSLIS, director of the Carson City Library, and the wheels were set in motion.

The Friends of the Carson City Library received a donation from the Southwest Gas Foundation for $2,850 to develop the library’s creative learning department for school-aged children, including Makerspace abilities.

Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

We're working our way into Thursday, April 25, 2019 and feeling the warmup around the Carson City region. Winding down our work week we have art, theater and railroad history talks, library presentations, a fitness walk, climate change discussion, back pain wellness workshop, music ensemble at the community center and more. Enjoy the day.

After five years of leading the Carson City Library, Director Sena Loyd is closing that chapter.

She is leaving in February to take a job in the private sector.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. It’s another lazy, hazy day in Northern Nevada. You’ll want to keep your outdoor activities limited when the air is like this, but it understandably leads to a feeling of cabin-fever. Take the family out for dinner tonight at Firehouse Subs on Highway 50; they are raising funds for a local family recovering from a car accident. WEDNESDAY, August 8: Things to do in Carson City

It can be hard to wait for the weekend, especially when you’ve got the 25th Annual Taste of Downtown to look forward to. The fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence fills the streets with tasty treats from over 40 local restaurants, several bands, and fun for the entire community; it’s the best party of the summer.

She’s a grand ole flag, and there will be two ceremonies to recognize the stars and stripes in Carson City today. At 10 a.m. you can join the Nevada National Guard at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds for presentation of the colors, speakers, and even cake for the US Army’s anniversary. You’ll find the Elks Club honoring our flag at 3 p.m. The public are invited to both events. The Army isn’t the only birthday you’ll find today; Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates its seventh year with an artist reception and new work from Denise Jenkins.

School is out in Carson City and the summer wasted no time in getting started with the fun stuff. Head down to Mills Park sometime this weekend to enjoy the Nevada State Fair, Rendezvous and Carnival. Carson Valley Days is an annual tradition for those who live in the Minden/Gardnerville area. Lampe Park will be hopping with live music, activities, and another carnival. You’ve probably noticed the very large tent erected by the Carson Mall. The Ramos Bros. Circus has come to town, and will be offering performances daily for the next 10 days. Read on, this is just the beginning.

You may have noticed a few blue porch lights in your neighborhood; it’s a way to offer support for our local law enforcement officers. Today, those who have lost their lives in the line of duty will be honored at the Law Enforcement Memorial on the Nevada Capitol grounds with a ceremony, presentation of the colors, and taps.

Well, so much for spring. Stay warm today as the wind whips into town. It’s National Library Week, and the Carson City Library isn’t shirking its duties with the Lego Club, Story time, and a sewing class in its Makerspace all happening today. They have also brought in renown speaker, author, and innovator Milton Chen to lead a panel discussion on education inside of the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall.

A new week begins and brings us one day closer to warm weather. Karaoke night at the Fox Brewpub is an all-ages, family-friendly event, but all-day happy hour inside the Fox’ Den is meant just for the adults. Local theatre group, the Proscenium Players, have a few great productions coming these next few months; their monthly meeting is this evening at the Brewery Arts Center and anyone interested in theater or wanting to get involved is welcome to attend. Swing into the night with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club at Carson Lanes.

We’ve got a beautiful spring weekend to enjoy. I’d like to make this easy on you: if you are only looking for Easter-related fun, you’ll find it all HERE in my list of everything Easter. Those events are also included in this list, but there is so much more going on. Take a hike with Muscle Powered, get down to some live music, or cheer on your favorite roller derby girl.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before. Break a leg to the Douglas students performing in ‘Game of Tiaras’ this weekend; the show sounds hilarious, but be warned, it’s not for kids. For a family friendly outing, check out Story Time with Suzie at the Nevada Railroad Museum, or photos with the Easter Bunny at PetSmart.

I just don’t have it in me to make an Ides of March pun, but I guess I could take a stab at it. There isn’t really anything to be wary of today, so head out with abandon. Band students from all the Carson City schools, elementary on up, will get together this evening for a grand performance. Band-o-Rama will take place in the ‘big’ gymnasium at Carson High; get there early if you want a good seat. Learn more about the Court Appointed Special Advocates at their informational meeting; more volunteers are always appreciated.

Congressman Mark Amodei, R-Nev., said the library is “kicking ass.” Mayor Bob Crowell called it “cutting edge,” and a “serious learning institution.”

This weekend may feel like it goes by a little quicker than usual, and it’s not your imagination. In the wee hours of Sunday morning we spring forward into Daylight Savings Time. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is teaming up with NDOT and the Head Injury Association of N. NV for a Brain Safety Day and free bicycle helmet giveaway. Join up with our Parks and Recreation Department for a guided walk at Riverview Park. The Experimental Aircraft Association is holding a Young Eagles event today, so if your kid loves airplanes, you won’t want to miss it.

Our library didn’t just get a new coat of paint during the several weeks it was undergoing its ‘refresh.’ It was also creating space for makers. Several programs are in the works that will require the use of the new sewing machines, and you’ll need to get certified before you can participate. Drop in today or on Saturday and you’ll be ready for anything. Carolyn Dolan brings the blues to Living the Good Life, but if you want to take to the stage yourself, look for karaoke at Jimmy G’s Hookah Lounge or the new Bella Vita Bistro in the Carson Mall.

Gong hei fat choy, Carson City. Today kicks off the Asian New Year, the Year of the Dog. Explore a new culture at the International Film Festival at the Community Center. The afternoon offers independent documentaries, and this evening brings a renown Mexican Film about the life and times of iconic actor and comedian, Mario Moreno. Take a gander at the newly refreshed Carson City Library during their Grand Re-opening celebration. Start your weekend with some comedy, live music, swing dancing, or karaoke.

The Carson City Library, the capital’s center for knowledge and discovery is launching a Makerspace in February 2018. The Makerpsace will provide a location in Carson City for makers (people who make things) of all levels to participate in hands on innovation, learning, and creating.

October might bring to mind everything pumpkin-colored, but Carson Tahoe Health would rather you ‘Think Pink.’ The annual kick-off to Breast Cancer Awareness Month returns to Red’s Old 395 with yummy appetizers, cold drinks, and plenty of pink. The Washington Redskins take on the Kansas City Chiefs tonight for Monday Night Football. If you haven’t decided where to watch, the football party and buffet at Living the Good Life is a new option. Take your competitive nature to Carson Cigar Co. for their Tabletop Game Night.

Happily ever after is usually dismissed as a Disney movie ending, but bring your Mickey Mouse knowledge to the Carson Library for a family friendly trivia night. Jazz in on the menu at Living the Good Life, in addition to some delicious dinner options. Learn what a Gibson Girl of the Victorian era did to get her classic silhouette at the Dayton Historical Society meeting. A special joint meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors and the Carson City School District Board of Trustees will be held this Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. inside the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Rumor has it, there’s a storm on the way. Bundle up and do a snow dance if you want a white Christmas. It’s the first day of winter break hours at the Arlington Square Ice Rink; it’s a perfect place for the kids to burn off some holiday energy. Genoa Candy and Coffee invites everyone to enjoy story time tonight.

The winter solstice is today: the shortest day and longest night of the year. I’m always happy to hear that because it means longer days are on their way. The holiday frenzy continues, so don’t miss out on those pictures with Santa. Red’s Old 395 will send you off with a complementary 4”x6” photo, and Santa’s Village at the Carson Mall is open all day. Head to your favorite tavern and toast to the repeal of alcohol prohibition, or head to Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for their Repeal Day Party. Kids can enjoy hot chocolate and a couple hours of skating after school for the special price of $5, and that includes skate rental. Firkin and Fox is the Monday night place to be with karaoke following tonight’s football game.

We’ve just about made it. Time to grab the last of the ingredients from the grocery store and get ready for the big day tomorrow. Wax up the skis and snowboards while you’re at it, the Tahoe resorts are opening for business. Today, you’ll have the chance to hit the slopes at Northstar and Heavenly; Kirkwood will be ready on Saturday. Some of you are mapping out your game plan for the big shopping weekend; don’t forget to visit downtown Carson City on Small Business Saturday.

The full moon tonight is something special. Known as a ‘supermoon’ for how close it will be to earth, it’s going to be worth a look. A hike this evening at Washoe Lake State Park is planned for those who would like to see it from the sand dunes. El Charro Avita always has Monday Night Football specials for those who want to watch the Bengal/Giants game, but the High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets there as well for their weekly club meet-up and dancing.
