Parade and carnival, Pow Wow, pancakes and more: Carson City set for Nevada Day weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

Here's the rundown of events over the next three days:

Friday, October 25
Day Out with Thomas on the V&T Railroad. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Virgina and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Day Out With Thomas “Big Adventures Tour 2019” is a family event that offers aspiring engineers and their families the unique opportunity to take a 25-minute ride with the classic storybook engine, along with fun activities including temporary tattoos, face painting, storytelling, train play tables, mini golf a shop at the Thomas store and more.

Free admission to Nevada State Museum. 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. In celebration of Nevada Day, the Nevada State Museum offers free admission all day.

Muscle Powered Friday morning walk at Fuji Park. 9 a.m. Meet in the parking lot on the westside of the exhibit building at 601 Old Clear Creek Road. Dirt trail and some pavement. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City!

Historical East-Side Tour. 10 a.m. This free tour begins at the Capitol steps and continues to the location of the former children’s home, which was also the site of the 1897 Corbett Fitzsimmons heavyweight title fight. The tour also includes a visit to the site of the former V&T Railroad shops as well as many other historic locations.

Nevada Day Store. 12 to 5 p.m. at 716 N. Carson Street. Features Nevada and Battle Born Logo Wear, Home Means Nevada, local pottery, jewelry, authors and more.

RSVP Nevada Day Carnival . 12 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park. Mills Park in Carson City Carnival rides for adults and children, live music, food booths, craft vendors & more. All-day ride wristbands are $30; $5 Discount Coupons available at RSVP website, RSVP office, & RSVP booth. Proceeds assist seniors to help them remain independent and at home with dignity.

Historical West-Side Tour. 1:30 p.m. in the front courtyard of the Nevada State Museum. Explore the historic Westside of Carson City where many notable residents have lived. These include Abraham Curry, Orion Clemens and his brother, Samuel, Duane Bliss, William Stewart, James Nye, Dat-So-La-Lee and many others, including the Governor’s Mansion. This approximately 90 minute walking tour will highlight the homes, churches and schools of early Carson City.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. A Premiere library card is required to attend.

The Carson Tigersharks to Celebrate 50th year with alumni swim meet, gala. 4 p.m. at 841 N. Roop Street. Come join the Carson Tigersharks celebrate 50 years with an alumni swim meet and family-friendly Gala! The Tigersharks are incredibly proud to be part of the Carson City community for the past 50 years.

Carson Mall's Cruise Night. 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Music, raffles, trophies and awards, and cars, cars, cars!!! Grab bags to the first 15 cars. All Money will go back to a hand-picked organization that is in need. Each month is a benefit for a different charity. Please contact Chelsea for more information: 775-671-8150.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson Street. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Halloween Country Dancing at Piper's Opera House. 6 to 10 p.m. at 12 B Street. Country Dancing at Piper’s this month is going Halloween style! Hosted by Carson Lanes and Piper’s with lessons and music by DJ Tedi. Get in the spirit and wear your costume.

7th annual Blinky Man Bike Ride. 6:30 p.m. at the MAC, 1860 Russell Way. Blinky Man is a nighttime bike ride through the streets of Carson City. Participants dress up in costumes and decorate their bicycles with colorful lights, before riding together through town on a circuit with five stops at local bars and eateries.

Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9:00ish.

Nevada Day Pow Wow. 7 p.m. at 1860 Russell Way. Open to the public, the Nevada Day Pow Wow is held at the MAC Center/Boys & Girls Club in Carson City each year during the Nevada Day weekend in October. This public event showcases Native American/First Nations dancing and singing, also a wide variety of Craft and Food vendors are on site. There is a Hand Game Tournament, HorseShoe Tournament, Youth 3 on 3 Tournament and new this year, Corn Hole Tournament.

Carson Comedy Club presents 'Casino Boss' star, comedian Sean Peabody this weekend. 8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street. Comedian and star of "Casino Boss," Sean Peabody, will be performing this Nevada Day weekend at the Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget.

Whiskey Preachers rock the Red Dog Saloon. 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at 76 North C Street. Whiskey Preachers from Reno are playing the Red Dog Saloon! Come enjoy the rockin’ blues from Whiskey Preachers, great pizza, excellent bar and atmosphere.

Hauntober returns to Virginia City. Throughout the month of October, Virginia City will be hosting several events to shine light on its spooky past. Virginia City boasts its notoriety of being one of the three most haunted towns in the United States, along with Savannah and Charleston. Otherworldly “haunts” exist during Halloween as Virginia City celebrates its ghostly history and offers a month of ghost experiences. Want to have your own paranormal experience? See the places and feel the chill with Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours, or jump on board the V & T Railroad Halloween train for a spooky trip.

Saturday, October 26
Nevada Builders Women's Council Pancake Breakfast. 6 to 9:30 a.m. at Red’s Old 395 Grill, 1055 S. Carson Street. Enjoy a full breakfast buffet of pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes, coffee, orange juice or hot chocolate! Red’s famous Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas are also available at the bar. Proceeds go to the Nevada Builders Foundation Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships to all four community colleges in our great state. Early Bird Special $6 tickets purchased in advance or before 7 a.m. Parade Day. Tickets bought after 7 a.m. are $8.00. Hurry and get your tickets now.

Carson City Republican Women to hold Nevada Day Pancake Breakfast. 7 a.m. in the Nevada Room at the Governor's Mansion. The cost for the breakfast of pancakes, ham, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 10. Our local and state politicians serve at this event and also visit with the attendees.

Nevada Day Parade Pancake Breakfast at the Carson Lodge. 7 to 10 a.m. at 13 E. Washington Street. This annual event, tickets $5, is hosted by Carson Lodge No. 1, Free & Accepted Masons for the benefit of our youth programs, scholarships and historic preservation. Community, friends and family are all invited.

30th annual Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk. 8 a.m. at the corner of Telegraph and Curry St. he Classic, hosted by Tahoe Mountain Milers, benefits Guide Dogs for the Blind. Local guide dog puppies-in-training and their raisers from the group Eyes for Tomorrow will serve as course marshals to guide runners and walkers through the west side of Nevada’s capital city.

Re/Max Nevada Day Balloon Launch. 8 a.m. near the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street. Watch the majesty of hot air balloons launching right on Carson Street near the Carson Mall beginning at 8:00 a.m. on parade day (weather permitting). The balloons fly for about an hour and are usually down before the parade even starts. The launch operates under the assistance of the Great Reno Balloon Race.

Fall Fest at Max Casino. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 900 S. Carson Street. Join us for the 4th Annual Northern Nevada Fall Fest. The Max Casino will be selling food, drinks and alcohol. Northern Nevada HotSpot will have vendors for shopping, a kids zone with bounce houses, slides, velcro wall, sumo suits, Zippy Pets & more! There will be face painting, (prices vary per activity), raffles, giveaways, swag bags, candy & more! We will be in the front parking lot of the Max Casino that runs right along HWY 395 where the Nevada Day parade will pass right by.

Free admission into the Nevada State Museum. 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. In celebration of Nevada Day, the Nevada State Museum offers free admission all day.

Driving Education offered through WNC Continuing Education. 9 a.m. at Western Nevada College. This fall Continuing Education at Western Nevada College in Carson City offers 30 hours of new driver education. Meets requirements to obtain a Nevada driver's license. Uses lectures, interactive CD's, guest speakers and videos in a classroom setting to cover Nevada driving regulations, basic vehicle control, and challenging situations.

Carson Victory Rollers. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. The Second Annual “Battle for the Silver Skate” No. B4SS Tournament hosted by your local roller derby team, the Carson Victory Rollers, returns as a featured activity for the Nevada Day weekend festivities.

46th annual World Championship Single Jack Rock Drilling Contest. 11 a.m. at the Max Casino parking lot located on N. Carson Street. The World Championship Single Jack Rock Drilling Contest takes place on Sat., Oct. 26, 2019 in its new location: Max Casino parking lot on North Carson St. The competition begins around 11:00 a.m. Contestants use 4 1/2 pound hammers and a 3/4” bit of steel to drill as deep and as fast as they can in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite from the Yosemite area (the hardest known granite in the region).

Guided Walk of Historic Genoa. 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park, 2295 Main St. Mormon Station is located in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District, which encompasses over 25 structures and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk throughout a portion of the historic district this fall!

Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

35th annual Chili Feed. 12 to 2 p.m. inside the Carson Nugget’s Upstairs Banquet Center, 507 N. Carson Street. Secretary of State Barbara Cegvske and State Senator James Settelmeyer will host the annual Chili Feed in the Carson Nugget’s upstairs Banquet Center (507 North Carson St.) on parade day from Noon - 2 p.m. Admission is free, so arrive early for the popular event! Enjoy free chili with all the fixins. It’s a great opportunity to meet old and new friends, plus chat with federal, state and local leaders.

Nevada Day Beard Contest. 2 p.m. at McFadden Plaza, 223 W. 3rd Street. Held immediately following the parade, the Beard Contest takes place on the main stage at McFadden Plaza There is no entry fee, the contest is open to anyone with a beard. Award categories include: best overall winner, longest, fullest, reddest, whitest, blackest, best salt and pepper, best groomed, scruffiest, and most bearded community.

Capital City Community announces Nevada Day Concert. 2 p.m. in the Capital City Amphitheater. The Capital City Community Band will present its annual Nevada Day concert at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 in the Capital Amphitheater in Carson City. The concert will feature a variety of music from Big Band sounds to Marches, Patriotic songs and Halloween favorites.

Governor's Mansion Tours. 2 to 4 p.m. at 606 N. Mountain Street. Tours of the Governor’s Mansion (606 N. Mountain St.) take place after the parade from 2 - 4 p.m. Tour the upstairs and downstairs of the home where Nevada’s Governors and their families have lived since 1909 – the current home to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak and First Lady Kathy Sisolak. All-ages Halloween costume contest featured during Nevada Day Carnival. 3 p.m. at Mills Park. An all-ages Halloween costume contest like no other in the Silver State will be hosted by RSVP during the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 26. The 34th Annual Nevada Day Carnival, A benefit for RSVP’s volunteer driver program, respite care, homemaker services and other lifesaving volunteer programs that help seniors maintain their dignity, self-respect and independence.

Telegraph Square Block Party. 3 to 6 p.m. at Telegraph and Curry St. Join old and new friends and dance to the music of “The Trippin King Snakes” from 3 - 6 p.m. in Telegraph Square (at Telegraph & Curry Streets), sponsored by the Westside Pourhouse. Enjoy free live music, plus visit food and drink vendors and nearby businesses.

Astrophotography in our National Parks and Public Lands. 6 to 8 p.m. at the River Fork Ranch Preserve, 381 Genoa Ln. in Minden. The presentation by photographer, filmmaker, and IDA Dark Sky Delegate Jeremy Evens will feature images from national parks and public lands of the West, including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia, Death Valley, and River Fork Ranch, solar and lunar eclipses, and more.

Nevada Statehood Ball in Virginia City. 6 to 11 p.m. at Piper’s Opera House, 12 B Street. The annual celebration is back! Come celebrate and honor the great state of Nevada becoming part of the union. Dance to the music of the Butterfield Orchestra as you learn new dance steps with Gus, our Dance Master. Our Ball features a No Host Bar and a light supper will be served. So come dance the night away and have fun at this annual event!

Carson City observatory director to give star party talk on French astronomer, legacy. 6:30 p.m. at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Pkwy. Nearly 240 years have passed since Charles Messier created a catalog that made it easier for astronomers to observe objects in space. The French astronomer will be the topic of Jack C. Davis Observatory Director Dr. Thomas Herring’s talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City, NV 89701, in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Physical Theatre and Yoga Experience in Virginia City. 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R Street. Theatre professional Martin A. David and Yoga instructor Carol Garlington present a Creativity Workshop involving physical theatre and yoga experience. Come enjoy theatre games, imagination exercises and more at St. Mary’s Art Center. Come ready to move freely and have fun.

Nevada Raider Nation: Carson City Chapter Game Watch. 1:25 p.m. at Jimmy G’s, 301 N. Carson Street. Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter welcomes all Raiders fans to watch the Raiders vs Texans this Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1:25 p.m., at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St. in Carson City. The Chapter will host a potluck, and Jimmy G's will offer drink specials for Chapter members. A 50/50 drawing will also be held. Winner must be present to win.

Children's Museum SAFE Halloween. 5 to 7 p.m. Join us at the Children’s Museum for a night of trick or treating and SAFE Halloween fun from 5:00-7:00.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

Mrs. Carson City America, Kassandra Tapia, is set to grace the stage of the Mrs. Nevada America Pageant, scheduled to take place on June 9, 2024, in Las Vegas. She is proudly representing the Capital City, and she aims to not only showcase her poise and grace but also advocate for her powerful platform, Cycle Breakers.

Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae will be selling her Carson City and Virginia City books the three days of the Mark Twain Days, May 10, 11, and 12.

As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

Partnership Carson City has launched “Rediscovering Your Mental Health Series,” a five-week program aimed at promoting mental wellness during Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Each week, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to enhance their mental well-being and foster a healthy community.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.

Organized by Carol Park, the Elks held an open to the public, two-day indoor garage sale at the lodge in March as a fundraiser for Holiday with a Hero. Lodge members donated all items sold and assisted at the event which received excellent support from the community.

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested at a local diner after allegedly stealing a car from a used car lot two days prior to test drive it.

Friday May 10 at 7:30PM, Valhalla Tahoe kicks off their season with a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure,” at the Boathouse Theater. Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City.”

The Carson City Symphony Association will present a concert, "Pleasures of Music," on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 N. Hwy. 395, south of Best Buy, Carson City. The concert is a Mark Twain Days event. Admission is free, donations welcome,

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

Western Nevada College hosted a ceremony to celebrate students succeeding in training to reestablish themselves in the workforce on Thursday.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners heard a presentation from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) on the current status of the Highway 50 Preservation Project in Dayton.

After months of thorough community engagement and meticulous deliberation, Douglas County has announced the completion of its new Strategic Plan. This document, which will guide the County's decisions and resource allocation for the next five years, is the result of extensive input from both internal and external stakeholders.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

Family fun, lively bands and historical characters return to Dangberg Historic Park in Minden beginning in May. Favorite presenters, bands and Chautauquans will be joined by new ones as well.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.
