The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is hosting its first Gala event. The Gala is a fundraiser to help update Museum’s exhibits and improve programming. The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada is a non-profit organization that embodies a play-based learning environment dedicated to offering unique and innovative hands-on learning in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities, providing the joy and wonder of discovery to children and families from economically and culturally diverse backgrounds. The Museum provides a safe and fun learning environment for all families in the community.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Paul Klein, a partner at Tri-Strategies LTD, a government relations and public affairs firm with offices in Reno and Las Vegas. He will be lobbying on behalf of Compassion & Choices for medical aid-in-dying legislation due to be introduced during the 81st session, which begins February 1st. The bill gives terminally ill people with six months or less to live the option of taking medicine to end their life peacefully.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights holiday celebration goes virtual on Friday. Santa Claus will arrive virtually at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and in-person at Battle Born Harley Davidson on Saturday for pictures with families and kids of all ages. The Carson City School District is pleased to announce the most recent Nevada Association of School Boards Award winners. Trustee Lupe Ramirez was honored as the 2020 NASB New School Board Member of the Year and Mrs. Renae Cortez was honored as the NASB 2020 Administrative Assistant of the Year.

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! UPDATE: Organizers say due to an overwhelming response, the apple picking has finished as there are no more apples to sell. Organizers say they will bring the picking back next year.

In the famous words of the great Dr. Seuss, “You have brains in your head, and feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, came to a cross roads in mid-March and has taken a stand and shifted to the direction they choose!

The 2020 Denim and Diamonds fundraiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 29 at Casino Fandango's Grand Ballroom in Carson City. All proceeds benefit Austin's House, our local non-profit children's shelter. The shelter cares for children ages infant to 18 who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.

This year's gala event features a fabulous dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing to the music of DJ Steven ROCKS. Tickets are available for $65 or $125.

Thanks to the generosity of the community and the William N. Pennington Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada will be renovating all 12 bedrooms of the Ronald McDonald House in Reno.

The outpouring of support for RMHC at the recent Red Shoe Gala was overwhelming, as attendees donated $100,000 during the live auction and paddle raise portions of the event, which the Pennington Foundation offered to match in support of renovations to the 30-plus year old Ronald McDonald House. All $200,000 will be used for the remodeling project.

CARSON CITY — Northern Nevada Development Authority announced the winners Thursday of its annual Pioneer Awards. Winners will be honored and celebrated during the 5th Annual NNDA Pioneer Awards and Gala being held on Nov. 7, 2019.

CARSON CITY — The fundraising arm of Western Nevada College — WNC Foundation — held its fourth annual Reach for the Stars Gala on Aug. 10, raising more than $75,000 to benefit students seeking higher education.

Money begets money. And, that statement is true when it comes to the Carson City Parks & Recreation Foundation.

Recently, the Foundation was the recipient of a $20,000 matching grant from the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation to continue to refresh the Bob Boldrick Theater lobby within the community center that started in February allowing then Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund to present the Foundation with a check for $20,300.

CARSON CITY — Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Tuesday that Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends in Service Helping since 2009, has been named as the 2019 Pioneer of the Year. NNDA’s Pioneer of the Year award honors an individual who both personally and professionally supports and has had a significant impact on the economic development and growth of the region.

It has been a busy and productive year for Carson City Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund. He’s a full-time top selling realtor for Coldwell Banker Select in Carson City and a builder of homes at Santa Maria Ranch in Dayton. His construction company also remodels homes, right now most notably the home of Carson City founder Abe Curry.

Each June, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recognizes quality of life, community and economic growth achievements.

At the Chamber annual meeting on June 13, Chamber Chairman of the Board Robert Fredlund will honor seven individuals or businesses that personify what Mayor Robert Crowell is so often proud to state, “Carson City is a great place to live, work, and play.”
