October in Northern Nevada means more than Nevada Day. There are also outhouse races, fall festivals and Oktoberfests; all three of which are happening this first weekend of October around the region.

Get a hefty dose of silly and strange at the 29th annual World Championship Outhouse Races in Virginia City and the Seventh annual Main Street Gardnerville Fall Fest, where coffins and stretchers will be raced.

Or sample the savory with the Eldorado Great Italian Festival in downtown Reno, as well as Oktoberfest celebrations occurring at Camp Richardson, Lake Tahoe, and the Casino Fandango in Carson City.

— Muscle Powered special Saturday hike from Spooner to Marlette lakes. Meet at U.S. Highway 50 West Park and Ride at 8 a.m. for carpooling or caravaning. Grand Re-opening of Well-Being Massage and Functional Fitness, 1851 S. Roop Street #145, beginning with a 5K Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m. (registration at 7:30 a.m.) and followed by a light breakfast and ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. Event also features fun fitness-related contests and multiple 20-minute class demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Trainers and health-fitness vendors available until 1 p.m.

— Seventh annual Main Street Gardnerville Fall Fest, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville. Featured will be marketplace shopping with a host of vendors, blood mobile blood drive, Coffin and Stretcher Races, Scarecrow Building contest, live entertainmenta and more.

Drive-thru Flu Clinic, hosted by Carson City Health and Human Services, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the Carson City DMV Parking Lot off Wright Way. Those seeking flu shots should enter the event from Little Lane. Flu shots cost $20. CCHHS can also bill Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurance plans, so be sure to bring your insurance card. No one will be turned away for inability to pay.

— Organic U-Pick Apples at the Apple Basket, 7425 Franktown Road in Washoe Valley, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday until the apples are gone. Four varieties of organic apples: Braeburn, Cameo, Gala, and Golden Delicious.

— 37th annual Eldorado Great Italian Festival, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, along N. Virginia Street, beginning at West Fourth in downtown Reno. Yearly celebration of Italian culture features a grape stomp competition, wine walk, Italian farmer's market, children's gelato-eating contest, food booths, an Italian buffet inside the Eldorado, as well as live entertainment. — My Thousand Words Book Sculptures, 10 a.m. at Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Create sculptures out of books. — Sixth annual Pumpkins for Autism fundraiser at Andelin Family Farm, 8100 Pyramid Way in Sparks, throughout the month of October. Hours are 6-10 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Special activities include Zombie Paintball Thursdays through Saturdays from 7-10 p.m., and Corn Creepers, Thursdays through Saturdays 8-10 p.m. The fundraiser, open to the public, is a benefit for the Autism Coalition of Nevada. Fall Fish Fest at Taylor Creek Visitor Center, Lake Tahoe, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Celebration of the arrival of Kokanee salmon. Taylor Creek Visitor Center is located off State Route 89, three miles north of the City of South Lake Tahoe, CA.

— 24th annual Oktoberfest, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, at Camp Richardson Resort, State Route 89 at Lake Tahoe. Admission to the even is free. Tickets available to purchase for food and drinks. Visit www.camprichardson.com/oktoberfest for more information.

Casino Fandango Oktoberfest 2018, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the front parking lot off South Carson Street. Admission is free. Beer garden to serve multiple Bavarian-style craft beers and offering free tastings. An array of authentic Bavarian foods, such as hot pretzels, bratwurts, sauerbraten and spaetzle, will also be served. — The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Nevada Artists Association annual "Autumn" art show. Exhibit open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 19, 2018 at the Brewery Arts Center gallery located at 449 West King Street in Carson City.
More than 100 local and regional artists make up the non-profit NAA which operates the gallery located at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on Wednesday morning at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The new renovations at the Carson City Senior Center opened the opportunity to host art shows to extend enrichment to the senior community. Carson City Senior Center presents “Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground,” featuring 16 artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada, if such differences truly exist.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
