Carson City Moose Lodge No. 2709 raises $250 for FISH through Empty Bowls

On Friday, Dec. 1, Carson City Moose Lodge No. 2709 members participated in the Empty Bowls fundraiser held at Carson Mall. Attendees were encouraged to purchase a hand crafted, unique pottery bowl from the Ogres-Holm Pottery Studio for a $15 donation and were then able to fill each with a soup, chili or spaghetti provided by 20 different local restaurants.

The Moose effort was coordinated by David Wroth and presented the check for $250 to Jim Peckham of FISH.

Organizers exceed fundraising goal at Carson City's Empty Bowl project hosted by Ogres-Holm Pottery and FISH

Carson City Empty Bowls Planning committee wants to express their gratitude to the community for coming out to the 9th Annual Empty Bowls event held this past Friday, December 1st, at the Carson Mall.

Throughout the year, the committee invites the community to join them at Ogres-Holm Pottery to learn how to create, glaze, and design ceramic bowls for the event.

The Trick or Treat Food Drive has returned and at least nine schools in the Carson City are participating to compete and to collect the most non-perishable food items to win the 'Phil the FISH' trophy and a pizza party.

Nevada Women's Fund Awards FISH with Annual Community Grant

Last week, The Nevada Women's Fund (NWF) awarded FISH their Annual Community Grant of $25,000.

This grant award will be devoted to the FISH Student Housing project and help alleviate the housing costs for women living within. This way, the women can focus on their higher education without the burden of housing costs which will empower their learning potential, uplift families out of generational poverty, and strengthen the community. This is a major recognition for FISH with Nevada Women's Fund's support of this first-of-its-kind Nevada pilot program.

GreenUP!, a non-profit working with businesses to reduce waste, announced that several Green Dining restaurants will host a charity drive in partnership with FISH – Friends In Service Helping, a non-profit that provides wrap-around social services to community members in need.

The charity drive will run from Dec. 15 through Dec. 25.

St. Teresa's Deacon Craig LaGier to speak at Democratic luncheon

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Deacon Craig LaGier, St. Vincent Advisor and Minister to the Homeless at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community. He also serves as Chaplin for the Carson City Sheriff's Office. Deacon Craig is also the Founding Director of the Night Off The Streets program, or NOTS for short. To reduce the risk of ill healh or death due to hypothermia, NOTS provides overnight shelter at local churches to people without homes.

Hello fellow anglers! As we welcomed in 2021, many anglers ascended on Topaz Lake to bring in the new year. I and fellow angler Tom Blotter were amongst the many.

At 6 a.m. Tom and I were on the lake waiting for the official start time. There was an eerie fog-like mist lingering over the lake. It was a cool 18 degrees, and the winds were calm. Our first line went into the water at 6:33 a.m. and the first strike came at 7 a.m.

Carson City is facing the same problems other growing communities throughout the nation are: a lack of affordable housing which in turn is causing a gap in the workforce for important careers that require technical training.
