Events and happenings around Carson City for Tuesday, Sept. 11

A day of remembrance, heroism that won’t be forgotten, today is Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. Among Carson City featured events include a presentation by Nevada’s Homeland Security Advisor at the Nevada State Library, a National Day of Service outdoor cleanup at Silver Saddle Ranch and a 9/11 Memorial Service at Mills Park. — Tuesday Morning Walk to Kingsview Trail hosted by Muscle Powered, 8 a.m. Join in for Muscle Powered’s weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the parking area on Kings Canyon Road just west of Kingsview Way. Muscle Powered will walk the dirt trail behind the homes. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.

— Tuesday Evening Conditioning Hike to Secret Harbor, Lake Tahoe hosted by Muscle Powered. 5:30 p.m. Come out and join Muscle Powered for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors. Meet at the Highway 50 Park and Ride where Muscle Powered will carpool up to the trailhead. Water and study boots or athletic shoes required. Hat and sunscreen recommended. Hikes are 4-6 miles in length with an elevation gain, sometimes over 500 feet and usually on single track trail.

— New volunteer training at Carson City's Nevada State Museum, 9 a.m. The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is recruiting volunteers with a love of history and learning to participate in a multi-day “New Tour Guide Training” program. The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., today, Sept. 11, and again Sept. 17-18, and is open to both new and returning volunteers. The training program will introduce new volunteers to the museum, while allowing existing volunteers to sharpen their knowledge of the museum.
The program includes presentations by all of the museum’s curators and will also include training in new interpretive techniques that will mainly focus on the Historic Mint Building, which will be 150 years old in 2020. The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 N. Carson Street, Carson City.

— Iraq War veteran, Nevada Homeland Security advisor featured at Nevada State Library, 12 noon, Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Nevada State Library, 100 N Stewart St, Carson City, will host its monthly Brown Bag Lunch Series meeting in September with guest Caleb Cage, Nevada's Chief Homeland Security advisor.
Cage will talk about his recently published book "Desert Mementos." This collection of loosely connected short stories are set during the early stages of the Iraq War and offers similarities in the respective desert landscape of Iraq and Nevada and offers perspective of the different cultures. Cage is a Reno native and veteran of the U.S. Army. He is a graduate of West Point and served in Iraq from 2002 to 2007.

Job fair for Carson Valley Inn, Slotword, Bodines and Sharkey’s, 3 to 7 p.m. A job fair for four area casinos — Carson Valley Inn, Slotworld, Bodines and Sharkey's — will be held at the Carson Valley Inn on Tuesday, September 11 from 3-7 p.m. They are hiring for all positions, full and part time. — East Silver Saddle Ranch clean-up hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 2018 is National Day of Service. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space department invites citizens to come out and participate in a river clean-up of East Silver Saddle Ranch. The parking lot is located a mile off of the Carson River Road, turn onto Sierra Vista Lane. This area is heavily used by the public, leading to large amounts of trash accumulating along the river. We are currently working on re-vamping this area. Join us for an hour to learn more about our efforts to help make this area more family friendly and participate in a short clean-up along the river. — Tonight, 6 p.m., a memorial for the events of Sept. 11, 2001 will be held at the 9/11 Memorial site in Mills Park, near the Pavilion in Carson City. Local community speakers will discuss the impact the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had on our country, and our community. Sheriff Ken Furlong, Mayor Bob Crowell and Fire Chief Sean Salmon will be among the community speakers, and local pastors at this Carson City memorial.

— Town Hall Tuesdays with the Candidates, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 700 West Telegraph Street. Go here for more information.

— Cooperative Extension’s Grow Your Own, Nevada class, Saving seeds from your garden. Program starts at 6 p.m. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Grow Your Own, Nevada! Program presents four classes to help Nevadans get on the path to more sustainable, local, healthy living by growing and preserving more of their own food. Presenetation is an interactive video conference at Cooperative Extension offices in Carson City, 2621 Northgate Ln No. 15.

— Carson City Fly Fishing Club meeting, 7 p.m. The next monthly meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 11, at the Carson City Sheriff's Office Ormbsy Room, 911 East Musser Street.
Come to our club gathering and meet fellow fishing enthusiasts; listen and learn from guest speakers; enjoy a chance to win a prize in the raffle; hear the latest fishing stories, and much more.

— Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.
The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth" at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition, with art by 17 artists, will be in the gallery Monday through Friday until Sept. 27, 2018.
The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Changing Colors: Big-band jazz and poetry featured Tuesday at Carson City's Comma Coffee, 7:30 p.m. The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by seven poets and readers for "Changing Colors," a lively evening of big-band jazz and poetry. The event is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., in the courtyard adjacent to Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. Admission is $5, free for age 18 and under.

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding Membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.
Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Culinary students at Carson Middle School will soon have some new tools in their kitchen. The program recently received a $5,000.00 grant from the Rotary Club of Carson City. Club members surprised Culinary Arts teacher Tammy Borremans, who applied for the grant, in her classroom earlier this week.

The Nevada Treasury has announced the start of the open enrollment period for the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program, beginning Nov. 1, 2024 and concluding on April 15, 2025. The structured savings plan program allows Nevada families to explore payment options for college tuition and allows students to secure the price of in-state tuition early.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William St.

The Navy JROTC cadets from Carson High School recently embarked on an unforgettable trip to San Francisco to participate in the city's Fleet Week celebration. The annual event provides an opportunity for the public to interact with the men and women of the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps, and this year, the Carson cadets were front and center.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Friday morning to a crash involving multiple vehicles in the area of South Stewart and East Fifth Street.

Trick or Treat Downtown at participating businesses!

Member businesses in the Downtown Business Association are hosting their annual Candy Crawl on October 31st. This event is FREE and gives families a safe, fun and centrally-located option for Trick or Treating.

Travel North Tahoe Nevada partnered with Tahoe-based nonprofit Clean Up The Lake for an extensive cleanup of Marlette Lake last week.

A wintry weather system will bring mountain snow and valley rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning but should clear out in time for Halloween trick or treating in the lower valleys. A second system is expected to bring more mountain snow and valley rain or valley snow chances Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

For 18 years, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City has hosted the annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration in recognition of Latin culture and its contributions to the Silver State.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education HOSA – Future Health Professionals – had several students participate in a full-scale drill with the Carson City Fire Department and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office before the Nevada Day Parade last week. The training exercise simulated a vehicle ramming after a driver experienced a medical event, which rendered them unconscious.

The four men who filed a lawsuit against the Douglas County School District and four of its trustees over a lack of fulfilling public records requests they filed are now entitled to recover expenses and attorney's fees. This is according to Judge Thomas Gregory of the Ninth Judicial District Court of Nevada.

Three community nonprofit organizations — Eddy House, Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada and Reno Housing Authority have each been awarded $100,000 grants through the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. Greater Nevada Credit Union sponsored these northern Nevada nonprofits in applying for the grants offered through the FHLBank San Francisco’s Access to Housing and Economic Assistance for Development Program, which provides funding for initiatives that help create a more equitable future for underserved people and communities.
