As part of National Arts and Humanities Month in October, Nevada Humanities and the Gender, Race and Identity Department and the English Department at the University of Nevada, Reno, are pleased to present Writing from the Margins: Poetry and Puerto Rico.

As part of the ongoing Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Resiliency: A Blooming Diaspora, opens online on October 1, 2020 at nevadahumanities.org and will be on display as a virtual exhibition indefinitely. A Resiliency: A Blooming Diaspora curator’s talk will take place live on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at 7 pm on the Nevada Humanities Facebook page at: facebook.com/nevadahumanities. I've been compiling a list of memorable things people have had to say about Mark Twain for 30 years now, and most of them are from Twain scholars, but a few might surprise you, as being from folks you might recognize.

The Mile High Jazz Band Association recently produced a video, "Virtual Jazz & Poetry: Running Out." The video contains six short acts, each consisting of the reading of a poem and the performance of a related piece of music.

The Carson City Symphony and its associated ensembles have been entertaining people in the Carson City area for 36 seasons. Because they can't currently perform live, in person, they are producing a series of once-or-twice-weekly video episodes to showcase the talents of their local artists, ensembles, and guest artists.

Heading into Tuesday, sunny skies and more springlike weather are ahead before active weather patterns start up again later in the week. Activities lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered. You can join true crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding at Nevada State Library and Archives for a brown bag luncheon. There's a meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club at the sheriff's office, a paint and sip night at Living the Good Life and you can join Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee for a 'Fate & Fortune' evening of music and poetry. Nevada Humanities presents a new exhibition, Imagine Nevada: Nevada Artists and Poets Celebrate 10 Years of Illustrated Word Exhibitions, on October 3, 2019 in partnership with the Las Vegas Book Festival.

Imagine Nevada, which will be on display at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas from October 3 – November 26, 2019, brings Nevada artists and poets together to collaborate on works that articulate the Las Vegas experience.

On Saturday, Sept. 14 Nevada Humanities will hold its sixth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl in Reno celebrating this year’s theme “Unabridged.”

The Literary Crawl is the premier literary event in northern Nevada that will feature an exploratory day of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops.

RENO, Nev. – “Unabridged,” the sixth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, will take place Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Reno, featuring an exploratory day of over 40 fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops.

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. SILVER CITY, Nev. — Acclaimed Nevada author Shaun Griffin will read from his new book of essays, "Because the Light Will Not Forgive Me," at the Silver City Schoolhouse on Sunday, July 28, 2 p.m. during a free, public event.

A classic film, cowboy poetry and western music in mid-July at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Carson Valley. On Thursday, July 18, at 6:30 pm, train expert Jim Clark will introduce and provide commentary on the 1926 film The General.

Singers, songwriters, poets, instrumentalists and performers are invited to show off their talents Sundays, from 4 to 8 p.m. during open mic at Smokey Lonesome's Speakeasy, located at 312 South Carson Street. Signups begin at 3 p.m.

Hello Carson City and welcome to Sunday, June 23, 2019. Temperatures will warm back up again and stay that way until midweek when another cool weather pattern is expected to arrive. Heading into today, there's the 2019 Great Race at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, an open house at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum in Carson City and the Brewery Arts Center will be packed once again Sunday for the Summer Showcase Band Concert from 5 to 7 p.m.

Enjoy the sunny skies while you can as a quick-moving weather system will blow in this afternoon into the evening bringing a chance for gusty winds and scattered rain and light snow showers. From Wednesday onward it looks like plenty of sunshine filled days extending into the weekend.

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 12 for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Hang Ups."

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. It runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 at the door and free for age 18 and under.

Nine high school poets from across the state will take center stage at the 14th annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals on Saturday, March 16 in Reno.

A day of remembrance, heroism that won’t be forgotten, today is Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. Among Carson City featured events include a presentation by Nevada’s Homeland Security Advisor at the Nevada State Library, a National Day of Service outdoor cleanup at Silver Saddle Ranch and a 9/11 Memorial Service at Mills Park. “Open a New World,” the fifth annual Nevada Humanities Literary Crawl, will take place Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring an exploratory afternoon and evening of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry readings, as well as panel discussions, book signings, and workshops.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. With the monthly Wine Walk, Pour for Paws in McFadden Plaza, and Crystal’s Crusade Street Party Fundraiser on W. Telegraph, downtown is the place to be. Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. With three local theater groups performing this weekend, you’re sure to find a performance that’s right up your alley. Read on and be prepared to be bombarded with options.
