Train rides, live music, fundraisers and more highlight weekend events around Carson City area

Heading into the weekend there’s a number of activities around the Carson City region. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing.

Here is a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, July 17
Bookend summer with great reads, activities during 2020 Carson City Library Learning Challenge (all day). From June 13 to July 31, Summer Learning Challenge participants complete a certain number of virtual programs, activities and reading, depending on their age. Prizes are earned for registration and completion, and participants track all their reading time in a simple app. Everyone who registers will be eligible to receive a special take-home kit, with fun activities to log with their reading.

Carson City's Catmandu to hold benefit yard sale this Friday and Saturday. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1829 Brown St. In an effort to raise much-needed funds for the kitties, Catmandu is having a benefit yard sale this Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18. It will be held at Catmandu, 1829 Brown Street in Carson City. Hours of the sale are 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Summer Art Workshop at Carson Valley Art Center. 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 1539 Hwy 395 Suite 2 in Gardnerville. Students will learn the fundamentals of hand building clay and introduced to the pottery wheel. All materials included for $195 per student with a 10% sibling or cash discount. Students will need to bring a lunch or snack.

Nevada Artists Association Spirit of America Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Spirit of America proves to be alive and well in this judged show. Entries are from Nevada Artists Association NAA member and non-member artists from Northern Nevada and are divided into judged categories including oils, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, dry media, 3D art, photography, digital art and mixed media. Everyone is invited to the awards presentation and reception.

FUNdraiser for advocates to end domestic violence at Classy Seconds. 2 to 4 p.m. at 3590 Gordon St. We are big supporters of AEDV's cause, and we participated in their biggest fundraiser, Taste of Downtown, last year. We want to continue to do our part to support this nonprofit's purpose to support, serve, shelter, and empower survivors.

Dancing Class at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio. 3 p.m. at 315 N. Carson St. Join us for some dancing! No partner needed. Learn dance steps to all Ballroom and Latin dances. A Mix of mini dance routines and line dances. Improve turns and balance. Good for anyone who is wanting to learn to dance.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Nevada Humanities hosts 'Valley of the Sun' virtual conversation. 6 to 7 p.m. Nevada Humanities presents A Virtual Salon: Valley of the Sun — the next installment of its bimonthly Salon series — online at facebook.com/nevadahumanities on Friday, July 17, 2020, 6 to 7 p.m.

Alias Smith Band at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. You all were so good to us while playing acoustic, we decided to add the drummer and give you a new show. As always, Social Distancing and please wear a mask in the building.

Friday Night Karaoke at the Whiskey Tavern. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 3481 Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come hang out with the Whiskey Tavern and J and M Productions as we sing the night away every Friday! Must be at least 21 years old.

Saturday, July 18
Carson City Sheriff's Office Cadets to host car wash fundraiser. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Home Depot, 3185 Market St. Carson City Sheriff's Office Cadets will be hosting a fundraiser car wash Saturday, July 18 at the North Carson Home Depot. Come show your support of the cadets and get you car washed while you shop.

Carson City Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Motorcar Excursion at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2180 S. Carson St. The West Coast Railroaders Group comes to Carson City on Saturday! Visit the museum to watch the motorcars operate and learn more about these machines.

Grand Opening at Circle S Western Market. 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 1506 US Hwy 395 in Gardnerville. Circle S Western Market would like to invite the community to come celebrate our grand opening with us! We will have a live band, bar service, prizes and new inventory. All ages are welcome! Please respect everyone’s personal space and wear a mask when indoors.

Virginia Truckee Railroad offers weekend train rides from Virginia City to Gold Hill. 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 166 F Street in Virginia City. Looking for something fun and safe to do this summer? Take your family and friends on a trip back in time aboard The Virginia Truckee Railroad. This 35-minute ride runs seven times each day, beginning at 10:30am. The last rain leaves at 4 p.m. Fares are $14 for adults and $7 for children ages 5-12. Kids aged four and under ride free. Tickets are available at the depot, or online at virginiatruckee.com.

2020 Fall Registration Opens for AYSO Youth Soccer. 11 a.m. at Yogurt Beach, 3228 N. Carson St. Registration for the upcoming fall season is open for kids ages 3-18. Early bird registration ends July 15 and can be made online or in-person at Yogurt Beach, located at 3228 N. Carson St. in Carson City. In-person registration will be held Wednesday, July 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Artist Reception for Laurie Agnew. 11 a.m. at Artsy Fartsy Gallery, 405 N. Nevada St. Please join Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery in Carson City for an artist reception for local artist Laurie Agnew. The reception will be held in the front yard, weather permitting and masks are required to attend.

Nevada Reads has provided multiple ebook copies, but we also have hard copies available, at the library as well.

Spaghetti Fundraiser at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. We are doing a big spaghetti feed on Saturday July 18 at 4pm to raise awareness and funds for the JDRf Foundation! Please come out and support this amazing foundation!

BAC's Flatbed Concert Series Continues with Carolyn Dolan and Big Red. 6 to 9 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The BAC’s Flatbed Concert Series will perform a live show on a Flatbed truck en route through Carson City on Saturday! Make sure to join.

Lacy J Dalton at Ruby's Amphitheater in Virginia City. 6 to 11 p.m. at the Red Dog Saloon, 76 North C Street. Join Lacy J. Dalton and Dale “Guitar” Poune in Ruby’s Amphitheater at the world-famous Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City. Afterward, stay and see our friends from Edge of the West close out the night in the bar!

San Marcos Saturdays. 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 260 E. Winnie Ln. Saturday nights are heating up at San Marcos Grill. Special guests playing the best of cumbia, merengue, banda, reggaeton, club mix , hip-hop, bachata and more!

Learn about the Glenbrook Steam Engine’s history and what it took to get her back on track at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Steven Drew will lecture on the railroads of Lake Tahoe at the Nevada State Museum tonight. Get in the Street Vibrations mood at Battle Born Harley. A concert featuring Justin Lee, in addition to bikes and brews, will kick off their celebration. Families will want to attend the outdoor movie in McFadden Plaza.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Wednesday night to the 3500 block of Highway 50 East near the Phillips Motel and Mobile Home Park for a travel trailer on fire.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - It took 65 years to get to this day and for most of those days, Glenn Lucky has been feeling pretty lucky. His positive attitude and determination have been inspiring others around him.

UPDATE 446PM: Forward progress on the three fires has stopped and no other fire department engines will be needed. There's a total of 1/2-acre that has burned with firefighters now mopping up the hotspots, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon.

Carson City Fire Department was called Wednesday afternoon to the area of Highway 50 East between Deer Run and Drako Way for a brush fire.

Please come down to Telegraph Square, behind Battle Born restaurant, this Saturday, Sept. 30 to help out a local friend of Carson City who is battling Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Mark Linquist graduated from Carson High School in 1987 and still lives in the area.

UPDATE 2:19PM: The fire has been contained. Engines are being released, however the water tenders will stay in place for now, according to a Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief on scene. The equipment that caught fire is cooling down with water being used to douse the hot spots.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday afternoon to the 8000 block of Highway 50 East for a structure fire at an asphalt plant.

The Sierra Inline Hockey League in Carson City was one of six organizations to receive a grant through the Save Mart Companies CARES Foundation, the company announced Wednesday.

An 18-year-old cashier at a sporting goods store was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of misdemeanor embezzlement after allegedly stealing $457.45 in cash and merchandise, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Many Nevada schoolchildren will take part in organized events to walk or bicycle to school on Oct. 4 in recognition of International Walk to School Day. Children not taking part in an organized school event are encouraged to involve their family in safely walking or bicycling to school on that Wednesday and other days.

RENO, Nev. — Veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam Wars; their friends, family were welcomed on Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Reno Tahoe International Airport.

A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday in the area of Highway 50 and Russell Way for felony suspicion, possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor obstructing, possession of drug paraphernalia and a contempt of court warrant.

Carson City Rotarians joined together with Muscle Powered to work on the Secret Trail as part of a September Work Day project. The Secret Trail connects Hobart Road with Ash Canyon Road. Rotarians and Muscle Powered worked cutting a new trail that will provide for easier use with less slope.

TEDxCarsonCity is an all day event where engaging speakers from a variety of disciplines share their life's work, passions, and concepts through thought-provoking and entertaining talks that run between 10 to 15 minutes in length. The event combines live talks, TED Talk videos, and opportunities to network and discover unexpected connections and ultimately build community.
