Carson City arrests: Cashier jailed for misdemeanor embezzlement
An 18-year-old cashier at a sporting goods store was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of misdemeanor embezzlement after allegedly stealing $457.45 in cash and merchandise, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.
According to the arrest report, the deputy was dispatched at 12:39 p.m. to the sporting good store in the 1400 block of South Carson Street regarding an employee theft.
The deputy met with the loss prevention manager who advised he had been conducting an internal investigation of the employee since August of this year. While conducting the investigation, they received security footage that showed the woman had been stealing products and cash from the store since August 18, with $457.45 in lost products and cash taken from the register, according to the arrest report.
On Tuesday, loss prevention confronted the woman when they observed her walking out of the store with some clothing. She was detained and brought to the loss prevention office. The sheriff’s office was then called.
Loss prevention obtained a written confession from the woman who admitted she had been stealing from the store due to personal financial difficulties, the arrest report states.
The store wished to press charges against the woman and to have her trespassed from the store. A citizen’s arrest form was completed and a copy of the security footages turned over.
The woman was read her Miranda rights and was asked why she did what she did. She verbally told the arresting deputy the same information as she wrote in the statement, stating she was going through a rough time.
She was arrested on the misdemeanor charge of embezzlement of less than $650. Bail: $1,137.
