Greenhouse Project dinner fundraiser, comedy, live music and more: Carson City region readies for upcoming weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. The 43rd annual Wild Sheep Show will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention. Comedian Marc Yaffee headlines the Carson Comedy Club on Saturday with much more in store for the weekend! Read on for more information.

Friday, January 17
The Union hosts first 'Dining in Carson City for the Greenhouse Project' this Friday (all day). Friday is our first “Dining in Carson City for The Greenhouse Project” fundraiser at The Union, 202 N. Carson St. Stop by for lunch or dinner from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.. A percentage of all the days proceeds on January 17 will go to building our new outdoor classroom. Music with your dinner by Hick’ry Switch from 6 to 8 p.m. Three of Carson City’s finest restaurants are participating in our Dining in Carson City for the Greenhouse Projects fundraising event to support the construction of a new outdoor classroom at the Carson High School site. These generous community sponsors will be donating a percentage of all proceeds of the entire day’s sales on Jan 17th, February 21 and March 13.

Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge (all day). From Jan. 5-18, Winter Reading Challenge participants read a total of 14 hours, with extra raffle tickets earned for each hour of above-and-beyond reading. Prizes are also earned for registration and completion, and participants track all of their reading times in a simple app.

Wild Sheep Show: Largest conservation, mountain hunting convention in Reno. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The Wild Sheep Foundation will host its 43rd annual Convention and Sporting Expo, known as "The Sheep Show,” Jan. 16-19 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center and the Peppermill Resort Spa & Casino.

Eddy Street Vintage Market Pop-Up. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1235 Eddy St. in Gardnerville. Eddy Street Vintage Market started on a whim! Meant to be open for one weekend and done. What happened was nothing short of miraculous. A snowball in the middle of summer. What transpired was an amazing event once per month that combines family, friends and a love of antiques, vintage and repurposed goods.

Nevada Artists Association New Year's Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. NAA presents its New Year's Show with 124 entries by member artists. Additionally, water colorist, Melanie Walters and potter, Nancy Brownrigg are our Featured Artists and have their exhibits on the back wall of the Gallery. These shows run through February 14. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday except Monday. Coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. we hold historic Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations in the 150 year old Carson City Mint building. If they wish, visitors may purchase a planchet (coin blank) in the Museum Store and bring it to the Coin Press No. 1 gallery to have it minted just for them.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have waiver signed.

Jakota Wass to perform at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 to 7 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Jakota Wass will be playing at Bella Vita Bistro on Friday. Come on it and try our Fish and Chips and our pasta special. When you make a reservation for Friday night you will get a free appetizer!

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Glow Back to the 80's with New Wave Crave at Genoa Bar this Friday. 7 to 11 p.m. at 2282 Main St. in Genoa. Open the bottom drawer of your dresser and you'll see exactly what to wear when New Wave Crave returns to Nevada's oldest thirst parlor, The Genoa Bar this Friday night from 7 to 11 p.m. Is it outrageous? Is it white or neon-colored? Does it "pop" under black lights?

Marc Yaffee at the Carson Comedy Club. 8 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. The Carson Comedy Club welcomes Comedian Marc Yaffee this Friday night! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

We are located on Old Clear Creek road in Carson City inside the big metal building across from Costco. Climate controlled and very comfy.

Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

LEGO Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

Republished book honors late Carson City businessman Bob McFadden's passion for Silver State art. 2 to 5 p.m. at Stremmel Gallery, 1400 S. Virginia St. in Reno. A joint book signing and exhibition opening will take place Jan. 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Stremmel Gallery to celebrate McFadden’s passion for Nevada art and to honor his vision of creating a comprehensive resource for art collectors and researchers.

Free fitness and outdoor adventures available for young people living with cancer, MS. 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Mesa Rim Climbing Center, 970 Harvard Way in Reno. First Descents is piloting in 2020 a monthly meetups program in northern Nevada. The program will provide 11 life-changing outdoor and outdoor-related adventures this year free of cost to local young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

Sounds by DJ R-Boogie at Jimmy G's. Jimmy G's Cigar Bar is located at 301 N. Carson St. DJ R-Boogie will be bringing the funk to Jimmy G's in Carson City. It's an event you don't want to miss out on!

Sunday, January 19

Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes.

The Northern Nevada Giant Student Farmers Market will feature approximately 10 schools throughout the northern part of the Silver State.

Miller Counseling and Wellness Center began partnering with Douglas Center for Hope and Healing to offer grief support groups for adults in Carson City in 2024. There has been an amazing turnout, and the group appears to be filling a much-needed void in services to our community.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Carson City Fire Department and multiple agencies will host Tuesday the 2nd annual wildfire education and preparedness workshop for the community Tuesday, April 30.

Carson City is a Bee City USA affiliate, the first in the state of Nevada. Bee Cities are a part of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. "Bee City USA’s mission is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants and free to nearly free of pesticides.”

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

For many students at Carson High, Monica Weaver serves as a counselor who is dedicated to helping students navigate the challenges that could alter one’s four years of high school. But in the spring, Weaver also stands poolside, coaching the Senators swim team.
