Golf tournament, annual cancer fundraiser, railbike tours and more highlight weekend events in Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region. The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Combined with live music and railbike tours, the weekend will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

Below is a rundown of events over the next three days.

Friday, September 18
Khan Academy to Headline Philanthropy Leaders Summit (all day). The Moonridge Foundation’s 5th Annual Philanthropy Leaders Summit will be held as a virtual summit on Friday, Sept. 18 in place of its regularly scheduled in-person event. The summit is a gathering for corporate funders and family foundations, along with local, statewide, and national philanthropists to hear about the latest trends and best practices in giving. Knowing the importance of connecting and inspiring, attendees will hear from dynamic speakers about crisis philanthropy and strategic giving.

Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'H20 2020' exhibition. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "H2O 2020", with work by eight Great Basin artists at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery: Cyndy Brenneman, Vanessa Martinez, Nolan Preece, Nancy Raven, Craig Sheppard, Dylan Silver, Cathryne Trachok, and Candida Webb. The exhibition will be in the gallery through Sept. 24, 2020.

27th annual "Making a Difference" Dayton Chamber Golf Tournament. 9 a.m. at Dayton Valley Golf Club, 101 Palmer Dr. in Dayton. $125 per player. The seasons are changing and fall is considered as one the most beautiful seasons of all. What better way to leave summer and embrace the change than by pulling out the clubs and shoes and taking a few swings at the Dayton Chamber's 27th annual "Making a Difference" Golf Tournament.

Virtual Makers Club hosted by the Carson City Library. 4 to 4:30 p.m. join virtually via Zoom. For elementary school ages, join us virtually via Zoom. Registration is required at the following link above.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Keith Alan Barnett at Bella Vita Bistro. 5 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Keith Alan Barnett is back at your favorite Friday night venue, Bella Vita Bistro. An internationally known guitarist and singer who performs locally in and around Carson City, Keith is a real southern gentleman.

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Paint and Sip for Cat Lovers at Desert Sage Trading Company. 6 to 8:30 p.m. at 101 Hot Springs Rd. in Carson City. Calling all Cat lovers! Come have a relaxing and fun night out painting this easy little 7x9" sign on wood with acrylic paint. There are three stencil quote options to choose from.

Carson City Kiwanis to host 7th annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day. 7 a.m. at Silver Oak Golf Course, 1251 Club Dr. Carson City Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day fundraiser on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City, NV. The net proceeds from the fundraiser will support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Marilyn Elaine Academic Scholarship, awarded annually to local high school graduates.

Carson City Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Carson Capitols Lacrosse Coaches Clinic this Saturday. 9 a.m. at the John L. Harvey Field at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Parkway. Carson Capitols Lacrosse Club, a division of Carson Youth Programs, Inc., is proud to announce their upcoming season for boys and girls ages 12-8, which will begin formal training and practices in January 2021, with the season starting in March 2021.

DeBug to host free Community Shred Day. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 1817 N. Stewart St. in Carson City. 1 to 3 p.m. at 1560 U.S. Hwy 395 in Minden. DeBug Computers of Carson City and Carson Valley is helping the community to stay cyber-safe at no charge. This is your opportunity to help minimize the chance of identity and personal information theft. Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Saturday from 11:00 am-3:00 pm we will provide minting demonstrations in the Historic Carson City Mint Building. Witness Coin Press No. 1, a 150 year old coin press, mint .999 fine silver commemorative medallions in the same building it produced.

Artist Reception at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 405 N. Nevada St. Join us as we introduce one of our newest artists to our community, Jessica Brown. Jessica uses oil on canvas to express her love of the waters of Northern Nevada.

Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. inside the Carson Mall. Cost is $175 per person. Class includes clay, glazing, firings, and use of studio tools. BAC's Flatbed Concert series continues featuring Silver. 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. through Carson City’s west side. Visit the link above for directions. Silver is a five-piece callback to great Rock‘n’Roll. Their collective tenure in many pinnacle Reno bands left them seasoned performers and accomplished studio musicians.

Carson City Library hosts virtual author visit Jessica Bruder. 5 p.m. via Zoom. Join Nevada Humanities and Carson City Library in welcoming the award winning author and journalist, Jessica Bruder for a discussion of her 2020 Nevada Reads book, "Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century."

Jazz and Beyond Music Festival's Silver Saddle Ranch Event. 2 to 6 p.m. This year we are moving the Day at Silver Saddle Ranch to Sunday, Sept. 20. Entertainment by Sagebrush Rebels and Sierra Sweethearts. Visitors will be limited per government coronavirus restrictions. Visitors should bring their own chairs. Food and drink will not be sold or distributed to the audience at the event.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial, which brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The service begins at 1 p.m.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Shoe Tree Brewing, with locations in Carson City and Minden, was recently awarded a Silver Award in the 2024 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.

Western Nevada College is presenting traditional commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2024 on May 20 in Carson City and May 23 in Fallon.
