Open studio tour, drive-in movie, dancing and more highlight weekend activities in Carson City region

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The 2020 Jazz & Beyond Music and Art Festival will include the second annual Carson City Open Studios Tour with multiple locations. Hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, the Brewery Arts Center is holding a drive-in movie showing of the 1950s classic “Shane” on Saturday. Combined with live music and plenty of dancing, it will be a weekend for all to enjoy! Read on for more information.

Friday, August 21
Help Name Empire Ranch's 18 Hole Championship Golf Course (all day). Empire Ranch Golf Course is asking for your help in naming its 18-hole championship course and win an annual Empire Ranch Golf Course pass for 2020-21. The course is looking for a name to compliment our new Comstock Par-3 course that upholds the rich history of Nevada. The name should serve as a monument and reminder of this great state. Submit your entry at info@empireranchgolf.com or on Instagram @empireranchgolfcourse. The deadline to submit is Aug. 31 and the winner will be announced on Labor Day weekend.

Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Steam train rides available Friday through Sunday from Virginia City to Gold Hill . 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Step back in time in Virginia City on the scenic Virginia & Truckee Railroad steam train. Ride in the open air cars. Trains depart hourly to the historic Gold Hill ghost town and return. The rides are available Fridays through Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nevada Artists Association 2020 Summer Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artists Association is excited to present the 2020 “Summer Show." This judged show represents a collection of 74 plus photographs, paintings, drawings, mixed media and 3D pieces by Nevada Artists Association members and non-members from Northern Nevada.

Dancing Class at Yaple's Ballroom Studio. 3 p.m. at 315 N. Carson St. Join us for some dancing! No partner needed. Learn dance steps to all Ballroom and Latin dances. A Mix of mini dance routines and line dances. Improve turns and balance. Good for anyone who is wanting to learn to dance.

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Mr. Wizard at Bella Vita Bistro. 6 to 10 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. We will have live music at Bella Vita Bistro! Come on down and enjoy the night with us.

Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival includes second annual Carson City Open Studios Tours. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at multiple studios in Carson City. The 2020 Jazz & Beyond Music and Art Festival this August will include the second annual Carson City Open Studios Tour on Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at multiple studios throughout Carson City. This admission-free, contemporary cultural event will showcase about 30 local artists, presenting a wide variety of exceptional visual art and art demonstrations, from painting, sculpture, and 3D art to jewelry and photography, in about a dozen individual and shared studio spaces.

Special Medallion to be minted Saturday in Carson City. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. Special medallions commemorating the historical Coach 17 train car will be minted on Coin Press No. 1 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

Carson and Mills Park Railroad offer weekend train rides through Labor Day. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson and Mills Park Railroad entrance is located on Saliman Street just south of Highway 50 East next to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion. Come ride Nevada's only operating 2-foot gauge railroad in Carson City's Mills Park. Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day. Tickets are $2 per person, children age 3 and under are free, and can be purchased at the Depot in Mills Park.

Time to dust off those ten-speeds Carson City, because May is Bike Month in the capital city!

Carson City’s Muscle Powered hosts bike month each year in addition to their year-round volunteerism.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.
