With many public lands and recreation areas open across Nevada, public officials are reminding residents and visitors to recreate responsibly by continuing to take all precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. The Carson Canyon Railbike Tours will run four times over the next three days, bringing excitement unlike any other. Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe will open two hours early beginning at 6 a.m. to ease capacity and congestion. Combined with plenty of live music, Labor Day weekend will be a thrill! Lake Tahoe’s renowned Sand Harbor State Park is one of Nevada’s most popular recreation destinations, attracting thousands of area residents and tourists from all over the world every year. This summer amid the COVID-19 pandemic, visitation remains at an all-time high, creating severe traffic congestion along Highway 28 and causing public safety concerns.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. Friday through 8 pm. Sunday for the greater Reno area, Carson City, Carson Valley in Douglas County, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties as well as the Western Nevada Basin and range including Pyramid Lake, Northern Washoe County.

Forecasters say we can expect consecutive days of high temperatures in most cities near or above 100 with overnight lows in the 60s. Record high Temperatures are likely, with potential for a new record for the latest 100 degrees at Reno.

The Carson City Sheriffs Office is joining forces with other Nevada Law Enforcement Agencies to stop drunk drivers and drivers under the influence of drugs. Officers will be out in force from Sept. 3-13, 2020.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies statewide will be combining resources and joining forces from Sept. 3 through Sept. 13, 2020 to apprehend impaired drivers.

Gov. Steve Sisolak will extend Nevada’s soon-to-expire eviction moratorium until mid-October, while trying to fast-track the launch of a renter mediation program and adding $10 million for residential tenant assistance payments.

Following the successful launch of V&T Railway's Carson City’s Carson Canyon Railbikes, the organization has announced a lineup of special event railbike tours for the remaining 2020 season. In addition to the standard Carson River Canyon tour, riders can expect extended hours, themed décor and added entertainment attractions.

Come ride Nevada's only operating 2-foot gauge railroad in Carson City's Mills Park. Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $2 per person, children 3 and under are free, and can be purchased at the Depot in Mills Park.

As we head into the July 4 holiday, local law enforcement and fire agencies are warning residents not to ignite fireworks of any kind.

Not only are fireworks potentially dangerous and could start wildfires, private use of fireworks is illegal in Carson City. The Carson City Sheriff's Department will enforce the law to the fullest extent, as lighting fireworks is a misdemeanor offense.

The RSVP Carson City 4th of July fireworks show and carnival has been canceled, but there is a chance festivities instead could move to Labor Day weekend, organizers said.

The community theatre companies in Carson City and Douglas County, along with our local performance venues, have created a coalition with the goal of navigating the challenges specific to our local theatre community brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hello fellow anglers. We have a few things going on in our local area. For anglers that fish Topaz Lake, you have until the end of the month to wet a line. As of October 1st, the lake will be closed until January 1, 2020. There is some speculation into next years fishing season.

The Dave Matthews Band has made Harvey’s outdoor venue a regular stop since 2013, appearing on the shores of Lake Tahoe four of its last six tours. Typically, Tahoe fits the routing from the annual three-show Labor Day run at The Gorge, on the way to shows in California. Often that means the band is a bit weary and the sets feel transitional and somewhat soft.

Heading into Monday, Labor Day 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies, with daytime highs in the low 90s. There's no better place than Virginia City for a parade, and the Comstock continues to honor those who use elbow grease to keep the gears of our great American way grinding. Thank you. Other activities include a Tahoe beach cleanup, art showings, swing dancing and an interfaith picnic at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City, where folks of all religious stripes come together in fellowship and kindness.
