The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

The Carson High Craft Fair is a favorite for miles around. You’ll find pottery, jewelry, crafts, locally crafted edibles and bath products, and homemade one of a kind gifts for just about anyone on your gift list. Bring a canned or packaged non-perishable food item for a discount on admission. Don’t forget to pick up some raffle tickets; great prizes from the participating vendors are there for the winning!

  • Dune Trek and Beach Stroll at Washoe Lake State Park- meet at the Equestrian Pavilion. Turn right past the fee booth, pass the campground, and follow the short gravel road to the pavilion (10am; moderate 2.5 mile hike through the sand dunes and along the beach; bring water, binoculars, a camera, and dress for the weather; Leashed dogs permitted; $7 vehicle admission, $5 for NV residents)

Get out and enjoy the crisp November air with a hike at Washoe Lake State Park. The park rangers will lead a group out to the sand dunes and back. Dads, grab the kids and head out to Minden for the inaugural Dads-N-Kids Flag Football Turkey Bowl at Lifepoint Church.

Their Founder’s Day Founder's Brewery Celebration begins at 1 p.m. Stick around for some psychedelic jam rock with Parslow Vibe at Carson Cigar Co. For a more mellow evening, enjoy live music and a glass of wine at Bella Fiore or at Tahoe Ridge Winery. Award-winning singer-songwriter Ben Allfree performs in the all-ages Zen Den at A to Zen Thrift.

The residents of Eagle Valley Children’s Home are the beneficiaries of Whiskey Tavern’s Run for the Kids today. Play some bingo for a good cause at the Carson Senior Center: the Meals on Wheels program. Learn about a dark chapter in Genoa’s History during a guided walk to the ‘Hanging Tree,’ and check out the Mormon Station Museum while you’re there. If you want a picture of your schnauzer with Santa, take your furry friend to the Tap Shack. Pints, Paws, and Pics will send you off with an ornament for your tree.

Culinary students at Carson Middle School will soon have some new tools in their kitchen. The program recently received a $5,000.00 grant from the Rotary Club of Carson City. Club members surprised Culinary Arts teacher Tammy Borremans, who applied for the grant, in her classroom earlier this week.

A storm system moved into the region overnight, bringing a few inches of snow to the Sierra and rain across the lower valleys.

Clear Creek Bowmen annual Turkey Shoot is this Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Carson City Archery Range, just East of Eagle Valley Golf Course. The event is open to the public.
