With the weather reaching the mid-80s, now is the perfect time to get out and explore during a jam-packed three days around the Carson City region. Friday has plenty of events to get you to the weekend.

GENOA, Nev. — Mormon Station State Historic Park is offering a number of exciting interpretive programs this June. Join park staff in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District for history talks, cooking classes, guided walks, and children’s arts and crafts activities.

CARSON CITY — Rockhounds, nature-lovers and adventure-seekers have their fun cut out for them this spring in the Silver State. Rounding out the recreation: a tasty food and beverage scene and a calendar full of festivals. All you need for spring in Nevada is a map, a buddy and a knockout playlist for your road trip. Here, TravelNevada offers suggestions for an epic experience.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. The Silver Saddle Ranch is always beautiful, but an afternoon filled with live bluegrass and western music, food, and family fun, makes today’s ‘A Day at the Ranch’ your best bet. Beat the heat up at Lake Tahoe as the Annual Ta-Hoe Nalu Paddle Festival wraps up its competition at Kings Beach. SUNDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

The valley is alive with the sound of music: the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, to be specific. Just about everywhere you go, you’ll be treated to something to soothe the soul or get the toes tapping. Get the kids up early for the Young Eagle Flights at the Carson City Airport – they’re free, but you need to be on time for registration. Keep reading and you’ll find a number of ways to enjoy this sunny summer weekend.

SATURDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

GENOA, Nev. – Join Park Rangers at Mormon Station State Park for a special breakfast Dutch oven cooking demonstration. Rangers will be cooking up a breakfast casserole and a bacon bomb, all while explaining the basics of Dutch oven cooking.

It’s almost like Christmas Day for some of us locals: the long awaited Taste of Downtown has finally arrived. Food, drink, live music, rubbing elbows with friends and neighbors, and a new wine-tasting add-on make this one of the best parties of the year. The morning brings an unparalleled opportunity: you’ve got one chance to walk, run, or bike right down the middle of the freeway before the new bypass is open to vehicle traffic alone. Grab your favorite four-legged friend and head to Adele’s: Dining for Dog Town is a delicious way to help out this amazing rescue organization.

Take it easy today, that’s what Sundays are for. An afternoon porch party at the historic Genoa Bar combines live music by Deception and slushy rum runners. Dutch oven cooking is a camp-time favorite, and the rangers at Mormon Station State Park will be giving a demonstration on how easy and delicious it can be. They’ll give out samples until the pot runs dry, so get their early for something yummy. Keep reading for more lazy Sunday happenings.

SUNDAY:

What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. The Carson Airport Fly-In and Open House has plenty of aeronautic fun in store. You’ll have to keep reading for all of the fun options in Carson City and the surrounding valleys.

SATURDAY:

DAYTON, Nev. – Join a park ranger at Dayton State Park to learn the history and techniques of Dutch oven cooking. Park staff will serve samples while supplies last.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. Keep reading, there’s plenty of family fun this weekend, and adult fun if you’ve found yourself a babysitter.

SATURDAY:

Join Park Rangers at Mormon Station State Historic Park for a Dutch oven cooking demonstration. Rangers will prepare a cast iron elk roast with sides, and samples will be served as long as the food lasts.

Participants will learn about the cooking techniques used by pioneers in the 1850s as they came through the Carson Valley on their way to California. Dutch oven cooking is a great way to bring the family together for a meal. It can be used in the backyard or out on camping trips.

WHEN: Saturday, May 13, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Take advantage of the spring sunshine and seize the day. Virginia City roars with the sound of their annual Grand Prix. Beer and brats aren’t usually associated with ballet, but the Sierra Nevada Ballet makes the annual event at the Brewery Arts Center a great time for all. The Earth Spirit Faire wraps up its weekend of wellness at the Community Center. Head to Reno for a Cinco De Mayo Celebration at the Grand Sierra that features musicians, cuisine, and carnival rides.

SUNDAY:

Hold on to your hat, the weekend is here. If it’s a cowboy hat, head over to Genoa for their annual Cowboy Festival. Plenty of free things to see, hear, and experience await. The annual Spring Earth Spirit Faire lets you celebrate Mother Earth with workshops, holistic practitioners, great vendors, and a raffle. It benefits the Heart to Heart School and Advocates to End Domestic Violence so it’s always worth checking out. You’ll have to keep reading for all of your choices, the spring thaw brings out the best this valley has to offer.

SATURDAY:

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Kids will enjoy the Tales and Wags program at the Library where they get to read to therapy dogs and acquire a new book in the process. It’s a Carson/Douglas Army/Navy rivalry as the JROTC programs hit the field at Carson High for a game of flag football. Keep reading and you’re sure to find something that sounds fun.

Whoa doggy, what a weekend. Dayton Valley Days, the Steampunk Ball and Parade in Virginia City, and the Western Heritage Festival at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park are just the tip of the iceberg. Whether it’s in Carson City, or just over the hill in one of our neighboring counties, you’ll find something fun to do. Read on.

A free Western Heritage Festival comes to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 17, beginning at 10:00 am.

The festival will include Dutch oven cooking, a heritage quilting presentation, Chautauquas of local historical figures, honky-tonk guitar and jug music, as well as a day filled with children’s crafts and activities.

Compared to the last few weekends, Carson City is downright sleepy. That just makes it much easier to get around town and explore. Head to Mills Park for the First Annual Polynesian Festival in the Marv Teixeira Pavillion. Glen Eagles welcomes back the Regional Chili Cook-off this weekend; get your fill of some amazing grub and help raise funds for Honor Flight Nevada. Let’s go to the Fair, Carson City. Mills Park is hopping with activity: a carnival, car show, exhibits, music, and a return of the Rendezvous. If you have kids, don’t miss this month’s Young Eagle Flights at the Carson Airport, just make sure to sign up by 8 a.m. Start your day at the Third and Curry Farmers Market, and don’t forget to make your artistic mark on a handcrafted bowl for the Empty Bowls event. DAYTON, Nev. – Have you ever wanted to learn how to cook in a traditional Dutch oven? Here is your chance! Join a park ranger for a Dutch oven cooking demonstration at Dayton State Park, where he’ll demonstrate how to make delicious cast iron fare, share cooking tips and provide samples for hungry visitors. This event takes place on “Discover Nevada State Parks” Day, so park entrance fees are waived.

WHEN: Saturday, June 11, at 1:00 p.m.

WHERE: Dayton State Park, Group Use Area. 825 US-50, Dayton, NV 89403. The park is 12 miles east of Carson City on US Highway 50.

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

Spring has sprung. Days getting longer, flowers blooming, and now Easter weekend is upon us. Egg hunts, brunches, and even a parade are all part of the fun. Take a look at this weekend’s event summary for family fun, live music, and much more.

SATURDAY:

Easter bonnets, baskets, eggs, and bunnies are about to descend, and here is a sneak peek at where to find the fun. Most all of the egg hunts are free, but I've made sure to include an entry price if one exists.

SATURDAY, March 26:

Celebrate Easter at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (10am-4pm; Storytime at 11am; special crafts and egg hunt; $6 adults, children free)

The countdown to Turkey Day has begun, and living in Carson City gives us plenty to be thankful for: Beautiful views, our own deer herd, great shops, yummy restaurants, talented actors, artists, and craftsmen, and wonderful people. Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa will host two events this weekend. On Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. there will be a Dutch oven cooking demonstration where park rangers will cook up a special Thanksgiving dish to kick off the coming holiday. The event is free and open to the public.
