Happenings around the capital city Thursday include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, the launch of Thursday trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike at Linear Ditch, plus Soroptimist International of Carson City hosts "Celebrating Women Helping Women" at the Carson Nugget. There's also a joint meeting of the school board and the board of supervisors, and a documentary viewing and discussion of "Screenagers" hosted by the Carson City School District. Here's what's happening Thursday:
— Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.
— Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show to run through March 27. 10 a.m. Nevada Artists Association presents the Winter Show. This is a judged show presenting a wide array of entries from Northern Nevada artists. This show runs through March 27. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, except Monday. — Cardio and Strength Connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Wellness. If you've had problems with your heart, or have diabetes, a healthy lifestyle is the best way to get you feeling like you should. We've created Cardio and Strength Connection to help you develop a healthy exercise program in a safe and comfortable environment. Come join us every Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Health and Wellness Institute, Suite 250, 1470 Medical Pkwy. Cost: $10 monthly.
— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.
— Qigong Tai Chi by Kathryn Bricker. 1:15 p.m. Tai Chi Easy is a mind-body practice that combines gentle exercise, breathing, self-applied massage, and meditation to activate self-healing properties. — Muscle Powered Thursday Hike at Linear Ditch. 3 p.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The Thursday, Feb. 20 hike is at Linear ditch, central near Fremont Elementary School. Meet on Cardinal Way off of Saliman Road. Thursday hikes start at 3 p.m. and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required.
— Trivia Night at Bella Vita Bistro in Carson City. 4 to 7 p.m. Get your Trivia on! We are having trivia night here at Bella Vita on Thursday’s. Bella Vita Bistro is located at the Carson Mall, 1304 South Stewart St., Carson City.
— LEGO Club for kids at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.
— Carson City Schools hosts 'Screenagers' documentary viewing, talk on screen-time effects. 5:30 p.m The Carson City School District will host two showings of a 60-minute documentary titled "Screenagers Next Chapter — Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience" Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson City Community Center. The two showings, beginning at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., will be free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring their children. Technology specialists with the school district have also invited a panel of experts from the community to host a discussion and question and answer (Q&A) session from 6:45 – 7:15 p.m. Viewers who come for the 5:30 PM show are invited to stay until 7:15 p.m. and participate in the Q&A, and the viewers for the 7:30 p.m. show may arrive early at 6:45 p.m. to participate in the Q&A and then stay for the video. — Soroptimist International of Carson City presents "Celebrating Women Helping Women." Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Soroptimist International of Carson City invites businesses, nonprofits and local agencies to sponsor a woman from their company or from the community as a “Women Helping Women” honoree in recognition of their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls. Honorees will be recognized at a new “Celebrating Women Helping Women” event, to be held on Feb. 20, 2020 at the Carson Nugget from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
— Pilates mat classes offered at the Brewery Arts Center. If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen, hips, legs, arms, as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you! It also has a strong mind/body connection that gives you an low impact targeted core workout. You’ll get stronger with more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility which can give you a better sense of well being all around. Pilates is great for any fitness level or age as it can be tailored to your individual needs. Prices: $10, Drop-in, $6 class when purchased by the month or $80 for 10-pack. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brewer Arts Center, Upstairs Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City.
— Carson City School District, Board of Supervisors to hold joint meeting Thursday. A special joint meeting between the Carson City School District Board of Trustees and the Carson City Board of Supervisors will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Items to discuss include the introduction of the new Carson City Library Director, a Tesla Investment Fund gift, school resource officers and more. A presentation will be held on the K-12 Tesla Investment Fund Gift which was awarded to the Carson City School District in the amount of $712,250 to fund district-wide sustainability initiatives for the next three years. Carson City Manager Nancy Paulson will be introducing the new Carson City Library Director, Tod Colegrove during the meeting and will discuss collaborative programs and efforts between the Carson City Library and the Carson City School District. Also featured, a discussion of the proposed agreement between the school district and Carson City will be held in regards to continuing the School Resource Officers (SRO) program with the school district. The city and the district will split the personnel costs of three SROs, which is approximately $430,438.81 for fiscal year 2021. For those unable to attended, you can follow the meeting here.
