Here is what's happening Wednesday:
— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. — Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. Carson St.

— Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes at Black Bear Diner. 3 to 5:30 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis – no monthly commitment necessary. — Culinary Travelers Club at Bleu Cafe: New Orleans Speakeasy. 5 to 7 p.m. leu Café is proud to host their Culinary Travelers Club dinner. The dinner will be a New Orleans Speakeasy, Mardi Gras set in the 1920’s theme. The Big Easy has always had a lively penchant for independence, fun, music and food. The 1920’s epitomize that, with more speakeasies than anywhere in the country, with the exception of Chicago. Many classic cocktails that we enjoy today came out of that time, and we will offer many of them during this event. We will feature traditional New Orleans fare, Jazz, and cocktails all set in a fun Mardi Gras atmosphere. The parades have started in New Orleans, why should they have all the fun? Bring your friends and join us! Tickets are $59.95 each, bar seating tickets are $49.95 each. All ticket prices do not include tax and gratuity and must be purchased in advance at Bleu Café or by calling 775-297-3301. You can view the menu online. There is no cost to join the Culinary Travelers Club. People can join by texting BLEUCAFE to 22828 or by signing up online. There is no need to join if you only want to attend any of the monthly dinners. Members will receive email notifications about special events at Bleu Café. — Western Nevada College offers no cost Demo Day fitness class at Carson City campus. 5:30 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education department will be offering a free demo day for its R.I.P.P.E.D. fitness class on Wednesday, Feb. 20. R.I.P.P.E.D. combines resistance and cardio training for a total body workout, and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The free demo day will take place in Dini Fitness Center on the WNC’s Carson City campus from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Community members who enjoy the class will have the opportunity to enroll in ongoing classes, which meet every Monday and Wednesday evening. Discounts are available for seniors and WNC students, and Continuing Education is currently offering a “buy three months, get one month free” special. Advanced registration is not required. — Nevada United Veteran Legislative Council featured at Carson City council of U.S Navy League. 5:30 p.m. The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City. The speaker will be Tony Yarbrough, Chairman of the United Veterans Legislative Council. Tony Yarbrough is a retired Industrial Plant Engineer having worked in Naval Civil Service and private corporations all over the U.S. He is a Navy Veteran, serving during Viet Nam, and worked as a Machinery repairman achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. — Changing Lives in Carson City is topic for February Leisure Hour Club meeting. 6 p.m. On Wednesday, February 20, Carson City Leisure Hour Club members will hear from C.I.R.C.L.E.S co-founder and former Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean about the exceptional work of C.I.R.C.L.E.S. She will be joined by Thomas Blake, Jr., C.I.R.C.L.E.S. program manager, for the presentation. Twelve years ago, a handful of community leaders set a goal of making lives better in Carson City, and the C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Initiative began. The organization is a local Carson City nonprofit that helps elevate people out of poverty by giving them the tools they need to become economically self-sufficient. Joining Ms. Aldean and Mr. Blake will be a successful program participant and her daughter. They will share their perspectives of this vibrant and life-changing organization. RVSP was required by Feb. 17.
— Pajama Storytime at the Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.
— Historical Society of Dayton Valley presents "Hucksters and Bohos and Hippies, Oh My!" 7 p.m. This is a quick survey of some 20th century goings-on on the Comstock. Wear your tie dye and return to a (recent) bygone era. Presented by Michael A. "Bert" Bedeau who has served as the District Administrator for the Comstock Historic District Commission in Virginia City since 1999. Previously he worked for the State Historic Preservation offices in Idaho and South Dakota. He holds a BA in History from Occidental College and an MA in Historic Preservation Studies from Boston University. You can also learn more about living and owning property in the Comstock Historic District, which includes part of Old Town Dayton. Bert will have copies of the Design Guidelines for the district and will address your questions. Light refreshments at 7:00 PM, with presentation at 7:30 PM. Free. — Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600ppi. Email the attachment with your finalized logo to naacarsoncity@gmail.comwith your name, phone number and email address printed in the text of the email no later than March 19, 2019.
— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.
— Clothing and food collection drive underway for Carson City homeless.
UPDATE: Thank you, Carson City, for all your donations to the homeless drive! Your generosity has been amazing! Because of the overwhelming response, we have a lot of items that are not needed at this time, so I am planning a clothing/rummage sale in the near future with all the proceeds going to the Do Drop In Homeless Center to help keep their doors open. If you have items to donate to the sale, please call me so I can arrange to get them from you. Please don't drop off any more donations to Grocery Outlet. Now that the holiday season is over many people forget about the great need the homeless face everyday here in Carson City. With some of the coldest weather still ahead of us lets do what we can to help those suffering from homelessness. I'm collecting items for the Do Drop In Center and the homeless of Carson City. Some of the items needed are: Warm socks, Jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, camping gear, tarps, and hygiene products. We are also collecting canned goods, nutritional snacks, hot chocolate, oatmeal, individual servings of juice as well as coffee, tea and soup that can be used at the center. Volunteers and money donations to keep the Do Drop In doors open are always needed. Items will be collected now through March. — Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners announced, Carson City reception on Feb. 23. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 see all the submitted pieces. The public is also invited to attend the Winter Show artists reception and awards presentation on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2 to 4 p.m. at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.
— Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.
— Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.
