It’s not every day that a student will make a decision that will change the course of their life, but that is exactly what happened when senior Mason Dey decided to attend Pioneer Academy. Mason is the Pioneer Academy student of the month.

I took some pictures using my Nikon point and shoot camera from my driveway in Carson City on Saturday. I held a pair of the solar glasses in front of my lens to protect the camera. It was a bit awkward but worked.

On October 13, 2023, at approximately 1650 hours, Lyon County Sheriff's Office Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Starlite Drive in Fernley, Nevada in reference to a domestic disturbance.

Upon arrival, a responding Deputy advised, via radio, that a male subject came to the door of the residence and pointed a firearm towards the Deputy.

Carson High School Class of 1973 will be having a 50th class reunion celebration on Friday, October 27th (day before the Nevada Day parade).

This morning there was an annular solar eclipse. The clips started about 8:05 a.m. and lasted for a couple of hours. The pictures are part of a series and were taken at 10 minute intervals. The GIF file is a combination of the series. Although the start was shrouded in cloud cover, the majority of the eclipse was pretty clear.

Through all the gardener’s challenges this year, vegetable gardens in the Ranchos still provided a bountiful harvest. Something to be grateful for. A pleasure to share with neighbors, friends, and colleagues alike.

Stephen Provost, author of several books about the Silver State, will be the featured lecturer at the Nevada State Museum's Frances Humphrey Lecture Series on Thursday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. His talk details U.S. Highway 50 in Nevada, the former Lincoln Highway that now goes by the nickname "America's Loneliest Road."

Art show and sale, live music

Is it that season already? Area artists are answering “Yes!” And a flock of them are winging their ways to Markleeville to set up their spaces in Library Park on Saturday, October 21.

Art in the Park, the inaugural event of the newly formed organization, Arts and Culture Alpine County, features a host of local area artists of multiple media who will show and sell from 1 pm to 4 pm that afternoon.

The Carson Valley Arts Council is pleased to present an evening with The Bow Ties. The band will perform at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden, at 7 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023.

Saturday, October 14th has been designated “White Cane Day” by the Carson City Host Lions Club. Lions will be available at the Market Street WalMart and Smith’s Food and Drug on East William Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds to support vision preservation as part of the annual White Cane Day.

On Saturday morning, eyes went to the skies for the annual solar eclipse that took place. Photos were submitted by Bill Hopp, Donald Scott, Edward Howell and Randy and Vivian Spiker.

This year marks the 50th year of the World Championship Single Jack Rock Drill Competition which takes place every year during the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City.

Mary S. Bennett

Mary Socorro Bennett born July 27, 1936 in Visalia, Calif, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023 in Carson City, NV. Mary was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and friend. Mary has been part of the Carson City community since the early 1960s.
