Unconventional, monochrome theatrical feat 'Rope' opens this weekend in Carson City

In an audacious venture, the Proscenium Players, Inc. are set to defy the conventional with a groundbreaking black-and-white play, bringing to life the trials, tribulations and triumphs of creating an entirely grayscale spectacle. As the curtains prepare to rise on Oct. 13, 2023, at the Brewery Arts Center's The Maizie in Carson City, theater enthusiasts are in for a treat.
Designing the Blueprint Stage:
The journey of crafting this monochromatic masterpiece commenced at the blueprint stage, where intricate details were etched to transform the theater into a grayscale wonderland. Steven Segal, the director, revealed, "When I originally started discussions with doing a black-and-white play, the most exciting comment that I heard from people was, how can you do it, how is it possible, and it can't be done. Those three things gave me such a motive to create the best black-and-white play I possibly could do."
Shades of Gray:
To achieve the visual magic, copious amounts of different shades of gray paints were used to coat everything, from the stage to props and even the actors themselves. This meticulous process required a keen eye for detail and an abundance of patience.
Unique and Meticulous Lighting:
Creating the proper atmosphere and shine was a critical aspect of the production. Unique and meticulous lighting played a pivotal role in achieving the desired effect and color variation, setting the stage for a visual spectacle that's sure to leave audiences in awe.
Actor's Challenge:
The actors and actresses, on the other hand, faced their own set of challenges. Not only is the play demanding with an enormous number of lines to memorize, but each member of the cast spends multiple hours each night carefully and meticulously creating their black-and-white appearance.

Director's Vision:
Director Steven Segal shared his excitement, stating, "Every time someone told me that it was not possible, it pushed me to try that much harder. Countless hours have been put into set design, test and build. The makeup team is incredible, coming in an hour and a half prior to rehearsals to test out the makeup. I absolutely could not do it without them. Without such an incredible cast, this would have never been possible, and I am beyond thrilled with the results. I think we are going to have not only an incredible show, but something that people will be discussing for quite a while."
