Last week, Carson High Schools Capitol FFA hosted its annual Cow Plop fundraiser. In this fundraising event, donors pay to buy a square inside of a cow’s pen.

If the cow poops on their respective square, the square’s sponsor will win $250.

Earlier this month, Carson High School’s soil judging team took first place at the statewide competition in Ely, taking them to nationals. Soil judging is a competition where teams compete to determine the quality, water retention, classification, and consistency of the soil of a 5-foot deep hole.

A traffic accident was reported just after 1:02 p.m. Saturday near South Carson Street and Snyder Avenue.

Traffic is currently being blocked by at least two vehicles involved in the collision. There is only one moving lane on South Carson Street. One vehicle has been rolled over. Tow trucks are on the way to move the vehicles.

There are no injuries reported at this time.

Avoid the area if possible.

Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine will be the featured speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend.

The meeting takes place Tuesday, October 10th, at noon, in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.

Sierra Nevada Forums, in partnership with the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, to host "Carson City School Curriculum: How is it decided and implemented?"

The next forums will take place October 17 with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., and the program starting at 6 p.m. in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall located at 511 W King St in Carson City.

Carson High Debate kicked off the new season coming off their trip to nationals in June. In a vote that took both the public and members of the Douglas County School Board by surprise, the motion to terminate Superintendent Keith Lewis failed.

Despite a previously agreed-upon mutual termination arrangement, which included a one-year base pay of $175,000 following the termination, trustees voted 4-3 to retain Keith Lewis as superintendent. Trustee Doug Englekirk took an unexpected stand against the board majority.

Dozens of public commenters during Friday's special board meeting of the Douglas County School Board called for the resignation of four members following the release of information that Superintendent Keith Lewis would be terminated.

While several board members called Lewis's departure a "resignation," Lewis's attorney, who attended as Lewis's representative, said that Lewis had never resigned; rather, he agreed not to oppose the board's choice to exercise their right to terminate him.

Several Ford Bronco owners brought their vehicles to Capital Ford Thursday night where there was a live band and food truck to celebrate this iconic SUV. The event continues through tomorrow at Mills Park.

A 65-year-old Carson City man, Marty Gee Richmond, was arrested for felony child abuse and/or neglect Thursday afternoon in the 2900 block of Kit Sierra Way.

According to the arrest report, Special Enforcement Team deputies went to the residence to serve the felony warrant for Richmond.

Tee Jay's Corner Cafe will be hosting its 3rd annual "Chowder for Charity" on behalf of FISH, Friday October 6th from opening 10 a.m. till closing at 8 p.m.

The New England style clam chowder is free for a donation to FISH. All proceeds will be given to FISH.

On Thursday, Oct. 5 at 4:19 p.m., Lyon County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Sweetwater Circle in Dayton for a report of shots fired and a male subject armed with a rifle running from an apartment in the area.

UPDATE October 5: Superintendent Keith Lewis clarified that within the agreed upon terms, the board will be required to pay for one year’s worth or salary, not until the end of his four-year contract.

In a perhaps not-so-shocking turn of events, Keith Lewis, Douglas County School District’s Superintendent, will be terminated from his position by the Douglas County School Board after 28 years of service to the district.

However, the board will legally have to continue to pay Lewis’s salary for the remainder of his four-year contract, which began less than a year ago in November 2022.

In September, the Douglas County School District was placed in hot water when it came to light that their new attorney, Joey Gilbert, had charged the district more than $35,000 during his first month hired.

Every month, the Carson City Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, events, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

UPDATE 7:45AM: Travel lanes are open both southbound and northbound I-580 in Carson City. A cable barrier was struck in the crash. NDOT is replacing a few hundred feet of the cable and around 80 posts.

UPDATE 6:45AM: Single lanes are open with limited travel on I-580 between Willam and Fairview. Motorists can expect delays. NDOT reports the following: Southbound traffic is currently being diverted around the area, including via East William Street.

One northbound lane of I-580 is open in the Fifth Street area, with northbound interstate traffic traveling slowly. Incident responders hope to open additional lanes soon, but motorists are advised to avoid the area.
