Happening Saturday: Lions Club hosts annual White Cane Day
Saturday, October 14th has been designated “White Cane Day” by the Carson City Host Lions Club. Lions will be available at the Market Street WalMart and Smith’s Food and Drug on East William Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds to support vision preservation as part of the annual White Cane Day.
Lions will provide information about vision preservation programs available, increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, diabetic eye diseases, early childhood vision screening available, and the Talking Book program of the Nevada State Library. They will also collect used eyeglasses for recycling.
Funds donated by community members will be used for programs that assist blind and other visually impaired people in Carson City. Annually, the Carson City Lions provide eye exams and new eyeglasses for about 60 people who could not otherwise afford them. The Lions rely on their partners at FISH and the Ron Wood Foundation to refer clients in need.
“Donations given during White Cane Days will allow Lions to meet pressing needs of impaired adults and children in Carson City and statewide. Lions members thank everyone who contributes to this important work. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community,” said Lion Terry Rubald, White Cane Day chairman.
Local Lions have raised thousands of dollars since the Club first started in 1932 to support numerous projects, including the sight preservation program, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Project for Canine Companions for Independence (LPCCI), Lions Eye Foundation of Nevada and California, and Lions In Sight. Each of these groups provide various services related to vision preservation or to help the blind.
The Carson City Host Lions Club meets at noon on Mondays at La Capital Café and Grill. The Lions identify and fulfill community vision, hearing, environment, youth, and other charitable needs.
