Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of June 25

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of June 25, 2014.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
If you're planning on fishing Almanor, the next 2 weeks should be good.
The moon phase will darken, insect hatches are still popping off, surface temps are still cool enough, feeding cycles will self correct, allowing anglers a much better shot at a successful morning. Generally, most boats have been trolling and been scattered all over both basins looking for the hot bite. Courtesy of Almanor Adventures.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Lake Sabrina:
Another awesome weekend at the Lake – lots of people getting out of the heat and into some cool temps and spectacular scenery – just what the doctor ordered.
Once again, fishing was great – slowed a bit during the week, but picked back up for the weekend.
At the DingleBerry Inlet, anglers were using the norm – Nightcrawlers, Salmon Eggs, Power Bait and Lures – really didn’t matter what you were throwing at those fish – they were catching everything.
If you were trolling, it was Thomas Buoyants or Nightcrawlers. Nightxrawlers were working just drifting thru the channels.
It was tossing Lures and Power Bait from shore.
DFG stocked on Tuesday.
Cousins Caden Carmelo and Philip Steinert were making memories and catching fish while Paige Martinez of Bishop caught her first fish on what she calls ‘Unicorn Bait’ (really bright and sparkly Power Bait).

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake level has leveled off now at 42% capacity and now may come up a bit with more water coming into the lake than is going out.
A confirmed stocking of DFW trout this week should pump some more life into this lake.
Small car top boats, small aluminum boats or float tubes here, water level is to low to launch anything else.
Fishing by the dam in the morning has been good along with the inlet portion of the lake more towards the evening. Lots of PWC (Personal Water Craft) or Jet skis ripping around the lake during the day so look for morning and evening fishing to be more productive.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707)
www.kenssport.com) reports:
June 23, 2014
Bridgeport is still fishing excellent for trolling, still fishing and the perch are still on the bite.
Bait anglers are fishing in the Rainbow point area, as well as the points to the North of Rainbow. There's also been some folks doing well out in the flats between Rainbow and the East shore of the lake.
Trollers are doing the best in the narrows near where the public marina is.
Anglers searching for perch are finding them near the dam and on some of the rocky points to the south of the dam.
Bait and lures to try include: mice tails, power bait, crawlers, needlefish, rapalas, blades/crawlers.

BRIDEGPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Bridgeport Reservoir 6/22/14
Jeffery at the marina is telling us his rental boats are temporarily down due to the low water levels. Check with him for any changes. The RV Park is in full operation & in tip top shape.
Fishing remains good for planted rainbows with a few nicer browns showing up for conventional anglers/trollers.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort,com) reports:
10 pound, 30 inch Mackinaw! Landed by Chris Cloutier from Gardnerville, Nevada on 6-22-2014.
Chris and friends rented one of our 14 foot Gregor fishing boats early this morning. They were trolling at 9:30 with a Quickfish lure at 40 feet depth off of Woods Creek inlet and landed this Big Mac.
The Mac had just feasted on 3 rainbow planters from last Thursday’s D F & G 15,000 catchable rainbow plant.
Caples Lake is 1 foot down from being completely full, thanks to El Dorado Irrigation District keeping the outflow from the lake to a minimum this spring and summer.
We always have plenty of fishing boats, canoes and kayaks available
and this summer we still have availability in our 9 cabins and 6 lodge rooms.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlake.com) reports:
Today is the longest day of the year and I hope some of you can take advantage of the daylight with some time out on the lake.
Fishing has continued to be excellent at Convict as we move into summer.
Anglers are continuing to caught the trophy trout that were stocked in the spring. More 3-5 pounders to come in early July.
The water level is still good at the lake. The creek is low but fishing well.
DFG has continues to plant the creek. The low water levels in the creek are still high enough to support stocking which is a positive.
We have the winners of the "Round Up at the Lake" Spring Derby:
Prize winners will receive a confirmation letter in the mail by July 15.
Catch of the Week:
Josiah Ochoa from Bellflower, CA with two great fish. The "catch of the week" was a toad, a 5 pound 6 ounce rainbow. Josiah added a second quality fish for good measure. It was a 4 pound 9 ounce rainbow. He was using a nightcrawler and he was fishing the Inlet. Congratulations Josiah!
Other notable catches this week:
Jerry King from Whittier, CA with a nice rainbow caught along the South Shore. Jerry was using  Salmon Peach Power bait when he hooked his nice 4 pound 13 ounce rainbow.
Harris Goldman from Playa Del Rey, CA hooked a beautiful 5 pound rainbow. He was using a nightcrawlers and was fishing at the South Shore.
Todd Herrington from Stockton, CA landed a 4 pound and 9 ounce rainbow. He was using  a Daredevil Lure and was fishing at the Inlet.
Miguel Anguiano and crew from Granada Hills, CA with three great stringers. The largest fish of the bunch was 2 pound and 11 ounce rainbow. They was using a Yellow Power bait and were fishing at the Inlet.
Scarlett Wood and her sis from Glendora, Ca with a full stringer. They were fishing the South Shore with worms. Great job girls!
Tactics/Bait:
Sometime it's good to go with the a old reliable bait.
Inflated nightcrawlers scored some nice fish ( 5.6, 5.0 and 4.9 pounders).
Roostertail and spoon type lures were doing well in the lake.
In the creek salmon eggs were the hot ticket.
The most successful Power bait colors were peach, salmon and rainbow.
The South Shore and Inlet were the hottest spots this week.
Other locations fishing well were Hangman's Tree, Jetty and North Shore.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Sierra Slammers, Tasmanian Devil, Green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Trout Teasers, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Rooster Tails, and Bite-on Fury Shad or Lip Ripperz Hatchery Dust on Power bait.
Here is a list of recommended flies:
Dry Flies:
Adams, Female Adams, Cutter's Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Black/Red Ants, Sierra Bright Dot, Royal Coachman and Hoppers.
Streamers:
Wooly Bugger (black, brown, olive, or green), Mutuka (black, brown, olive, or green), Hornberg, and Muddler Minnows.
Wet Flies (Nymphs):
Prince Nymph, Flashback Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Zebra Midge (red and black), Copper John (red and copper) and San Juan Worm (brown or red).

Weather:
The forecast for Convict Canyon calls for another pleasant week. Highs are going to be in the mid 70's and the lows in the low 50's. It has been a windy spring so don't be surprised if the wind picks up a few days this week. Here is the National Weather Service link that is usually quite accurate: 7-Day Forecast Convict Lake.
Sunrise - Sunset: Sunrise this week 5:35 am - 5:36 am and Sunset 8:21 pm - 8:21 pm.
DGF is scheduled to plant at the lake and creek the week of June 22nd.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
The algae bloom is beginning so finding clean water can be difficult.
Over all the  bulk of the fish are still deep in 18-22 feet of water.
Stevie's Wonder black/silver or black/red zebra midge.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Crowley Lake 6/22/14
Spot up along the hard edges of major weed lines.
Consistent fish now showing in less than twelve feet.
Water levels dropping slowly as flows increase on the Middle Owens & decrease on the Upper Owens.
The hot tip is to fish damsel fly nymphs beneath an Under-cator. Chironomids (midges) & damsel flies are in the same family-Diptera.
You tubers that like to pull sink tips, the window has now opened. The bigs crush damsel nymphs. If you are fishing chironomid larva patterns-fish over a mud bottom, not weeds!
McGee Bay proper is starting to gel outside the weedline. With the lack of run-off & weeds out to 14 feet, don’t anticipate the typical concentration here this summer.
Hot spots are Six Bays,  Hiltons, Sandy,  Alligator Pt., & Crooked Creek.
Depth to target is 12-18 feet.
Gillies #18/20, crystal emergers & pupa #18/20. (Broken back tiger & zebra midges) good when you have some texture on the surface.
Copper Tigers & zebra midges #14/18 also good choices for the lower or larva imitation.
Smaller punk perch & damsel fly nymph patterns are the hot ticket according to Doug R.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Trout are starting to move to the west shore around Jenkins and Cow Creek where they will pod around islands feeding on midges in the morning.
As temps rise, strip streamers on a type three sinking line.
Fishing snails and damsel nymphs will be good as days warm. Occasional damsels have already been spotted so expect an early hatch this year. Courtesy of Fish First.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Don Rotsma of Fly Fish With Don (775-722-8418) (www.flyfishwithdon.comn) reports:
Lake Davis - Tuesday June 18, 2014
Davis is low, clear, and temps are in the mid to high 60s with the last few days of cool weather.
When winds are not howling, there are fair numbers of damsels migrating in the Cow Creek and Freeman Channel areas with some nice fish keying on the nymphs. Migrations are still not consistent everywhere and you have to move around a little to find hot spots.
Early in the morning and when wind is calm, there are lots of Longhorn caddis emerging with some fish keying on the hatching pupae and just below the surface. We are still getting some midge hatches at times and fish will take them when placed in front of their noses.
Damsels are medium to small in the dark olive / brown shades.
Good unweighted damsel patterns fished SLOWLY seem to work best at times when they are keying on them. Use a floating line or slow sinking intermediate like Rio's Hover, or Camolux Intermediate fished just beneath the surfac up to about 3 feet deep.
If you are fishing just above weeds, action should be better. Remember the nymphs are swimming toward shore and you should be retrieving back toward the shore yourself.
If it is windy and you can't cast so that you are retrieving to the shore, at least try to cast sideways to the wind. Just move the bug slowly and pause a lot. Most strikes will come on the pause!
For the caddis, use an unweighted emerging pupae pattern like Chans Emerging Caddis Pupae in darker shades on a floating line and cast and let it sink in front of surface fish.
Look for fish pushing water ( nervous water ) and cast 5 to 10 feet in front of them. While around in the late afternoon, callibaetis don't seem to be a factor except in the nymph form. Yes, there are some Hexes around, but I will leave finding them up to you:)
Just a passing thought, a few years back (ok more than a few! ) I used to fish a lot with Dave Takahashi who owned the Grizzly Store and Campground before all the Pike issues and he would just pass on fishing when the wind was out of the east. Always the dreamer, I still went out, but maybe was not as aggressive. I have noticed this year that the fishing was definitely slower with the east winds (especially when they started early).
Let me know what your observations are.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
This lake will be stocked again for the second consecutive week and should continue to fish well! With temps leveling into the 70's this week it's a great time to get out and fish now.
Mack fishing here has been good for those trolling with fish ranging in the teens!  Jigging for these guys too have been good at depths from 70-100ft and some smaller guys being caught along the shoreline.
Kokanee fishing has started now with fat little guys ranging from 10-12 inches in 45-60 feet with most of the schools being between Loch Leven Lodge and China Cove and some larger Kokes in the 13-14 inch range on the opposite shore from the boat launch suspended 60-80 feet in 100-120 feet of water.
With the recent stocking some small Macks have been busy cruising the shorelines in the morning and evening picking off small rainbows.  Throw imitations that will mimic these and smaller baitfish now in these dusk and dawn hours to be successful!

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Trout and bass action has been good.
Anglers are catching trout with Power Bait, night crawlers or small spinners.
Bass are hitting primarily with night crawlers and jigs.
Water temperatures remain good and all facilities are open in the park.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
More than 400 anglers participated in the annual Free Fishing Day derby held over the weekend. The big winner was 10-year-old Armando Garcia of Las Vegas, who caught the tagged rainbow trout and pocketed a $10,000 scholarship. Three other participants took home $100 a piece.
Power Bait and night crawlers have been the most productive baits for trout, bass and crappie.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
We have had variable weather conditions all week. Nothing extreme, just wind, clouds and cool temperatures.
PMD hatches in the morning will put rainbows on the surface.
Throwing Tilt-Wing Dun PMDs will trick a few. Just don't strip your dry fly back up through the pod of rising fish. The afternoon fishing can be great if your use olive or black leeches retrieved on a sinking line. Suspending a #18 black midge patterns under a small indicator on long, really long to your backing drifts will increase your chances of finding more than a few rainbows on the end of your fly rod. Try #16-18 Pheasant Tail Nymphs too!  Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Shad are still being caught around Live Oak, but the big story is the nice move by steelhead heading up the low flow section. Even better, some of those fish are taking flies on the swim, even red copper Johns, and pressure is low. Most fish have been about 3-4 pounds.
Courtesy of Western OutDoor News.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
A variety of baits are working well at Frenchman now.
Mike from Reno caught 5 rainbows at the dam using worms last week and on Saturday, 6-21-2014 he came back and caught 4 more nice trout from the bank at the dam using worms.
On 6-20-14 Jacob Cole, 5 years old, from Reno, caught his first fish all by himself! He got a nice 22 inch rainbow using power bait.
Bob and Pamela Lee each caught limits of rainbows with rainbow powerbait. They were fishing all over the lake.
On 6-21-14, Marcos Inglesias from Reno caught 4 trout at the dam. He used salmon eggs. His fish were between 14 and 23 inches.
Please call us for current lake conditions and updates on the fishing - Wiggin’s Trading Post

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Lake is at 37-percent capacity. Fishing for shore anglers and trollers has been excellent all week. Some fishermen have caught a limit of 18- to 20-inch rainbows near the dam from shore with marshmallow/salmon egg combos and orange Power Bait.
The areas around the boat docks seem to be providing excellent results.
Courtesy of MyOutoor Buddy.com.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Golden stones are on the menu this week. Expect to find ovipositing adults near sunset. A great way to fish Hat this week is with a big yellow Stimulator suspending a #18 black Micro Mayfly.
Smaller, darker dry flies can work in the early AM hours. Try #16-18 Parachute Adams.
A #14 Stimulator suspending a Mercer's Gidget is pretty stealthy and just might fool the smartest fish.
The flat waters below the Power House Riffle can offer a chance to cast dry flies to rising fish any time of day.
Look for scattered hatches of baetis, PMDs and BWOs during the late morning through early afternoon.
Caddis are coming off in the early morning and then again near sunset.
Scout the flats for rising fish.
Warm and sunny skies through the week could produce hatches of Salmon Flies!! Be ready! Get on this river early and then again late if you want to find the biggest fish. The fish here are haters of the sun. Haters gonna hate. Go have fun!
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF:
Closed until the Friday before Labor Day, 2014.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is 12 CFS. Try an attractor dry  like a stimulator with a nymph as a dropper WD-40, green rock worms or scuds.

Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Hot Creek 6/22/14
Flows are dropping & weeds are becoming an issue in some sections.
Decent caddis & mayfly activity occurring daily during warm spells & calmer days. The small dark caddis are like candy to these wild fish and you will enjoy the best snap during this hatch. #18/20 hi-vis elk hair imitations will suffice, try some crystal olive caddis larva patterns for nymphs.
San Juan Worms and egg patterns are good choices for spring conditions on the crick. Dry dropper rigs using para midge or hi-vis para BWO or blue wing olive adult patterns #14-18 as an upper, while dropping a broken back zebra or tiger midge, assassin bird’s nest, or crystal olive caddis/zebra larva pattern will get you into fish in the slots between the weeds.
Lengthen your leaders to ten feet here, 5X is a good tippet size.
The deeper pools can be fished with weighted attractors like SJ worms and egg patterns hung beneath an Under-cator. A hot rig is an olive or light Punk Perch as your upper fly with an assassin or PT as a dropper.
You may also “swing cast” a Punk  perch or crystal leech across the deeper slots and pools for a shot at one of the bigs that hunker along the weed lines or in the gut of the larger holes. Use the yellow, or clear for short water nymphing. Midge cluster, or para midge adults in the #20-24 range are hot flies for surface action.  BWO adults fished high in the suds #16/18 also good calls afternoon when the baetis/PMD’s start to emerge. Dead drift some crystal scuds with a tiny, or no indicator at all in the deeper slots.

JACKSON MEADOWS, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
With this lake being stocked two weeks in a row with a healthy planting of DFW trout this lake will fish great for months now!
If you're looking for bigger fish you're going to have to fish the face of the dam more as there is always some big fish hanging on the ledges of the dam. Lake is at 89% capacity and it's a great escape from the masses that descend on Tahoe.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Rush Creek flow has dropped to 22 CFS.  Fishing is  a bit tougher with the lower water flow. Try a humpie or stimulator with  a hares ear or pheasant tail dropper.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
June 23, 2014
Kirman has been fishing well this week, it seems you'll want to get up there early in the day as the midday hours have been a little tougher.
Leech patterns, damsel patterns and scud are the ticket right now.
Patterns to try are seal buggers, stillwater nymphs, dainty damsels, red eye damsel, soft hackle, flashback scud, green scud.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River:
Fishing has slowed with the heat keeping anglers off the water. Anglers are still catching striped bass with most in the range of one to three pounds. Shore anglers have found success with anchovies in the areas near Community Park and Davis Dam.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Mammoth Lakes Basin
Windy conditions  hampered fishing last week.
Upper Twin best for fly rodders with Doc's Twin Lake Special black or olive or try hanging a callibaetis nymph under an indicator.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:
Closed until July 15, 2014.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Windy conditions have made things challenging for boaters, kept some anglers off the water and pushed others off early.
For those who rise with the sun, fishing has been good for the various species of bass -- largemouth, smallmouth and striped. Many of the stripers being caught average about two pounds, but one angler caught a fish weighing more than 20 pounds during the Nevada Striper Club Tournament over the weekend.
Anglers are finding shad at the back of Vegas Wash. Callville Bay has been a hot spot for the largemouth and smallmouth bass with anglers reporting more smallmouth in their catch than largemouth.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers have found good fishing for the largemouth and smallmouth bass. Some have contributed this to the habitat structures installed in various coves on both the Nevada and Arizona sides of the lake. Nightcrawlers have been a popular bait choice, but plastic imitations also are catching fish. Anglers at Willow Beach are also in good spirits as the striped bass have been moving back in to the area. Many stripers caught have weighed in at just less than 20 pounds.
Trout imitations such as the Bomber Long A, AC Plugs, and pencil poppers work well.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing is best early morning or late evening. You might catch up to 40 or more fish on a great day when the boat traffic has died down.
Tubes, darthead, drop shot worms are working as well as spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and walking baits to name a few.
Courtesy of Western Outdoor News.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Flow is steady at 53 CFS. Most of the spawning fish have returned to the lake  but a few still remain.
Try caddis pupa, San Juan worms and egg patterns.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow 224 CFS. Fishing is good  and crowds are low.
Not much surface action  but nymph fishing is great.
WD40's , rainbow warriors, baetis emergers.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Upper Owens River 6/22/14
Guide Chris basso reports good numbers of catchable rainbows around the monument section, with a few nice ones holding in the pockets.
He suggests you dead drift broken back midges & egg patterns without an Under-cator.
Flows consistent at 53 CFS.
Try streamers in the stiff afternoon winds.
Short water tactics must now be used to fool fish here.
Look for the deeper pools and runs during off hatch periods.
Caddis and mayfly adults are good choices for the riffle water. Hi-vis para bwo and caddis # 16-18 will get grabs.  Use a Stimulator or larger hi-vis pattern with a bead head nymph as the dropper 2 feet beneath the dry for a deadly tanden rig. Nymphing with SJ worms, crystal egg patterns, flashback PT’s, Assassin bird’s nest, broken back midges, crystal olive caddis & zebra larva patterns near the bottom.
I prefer to use a clear or yellow Under-cator on moving water as they are less conspicuous. The pink & orange work better on the still waters like Crowley and Bridgeport.
Streamers like Loebergs, Punk Perch, Crystal Leeches, & Agent Orange will also get takes when used with a light to medium sinking tip line.
Clean every cast!
Owens River (Bishop area) 6/22/14
Recent drift trips have been good. Up & down we go, where it stops only the LADWP knows!  218 CFS currently.
I expect them to increase significantly soon.
Wading & crossing can be tougher at this release.
Use birds nest patterns like Assassins, flashback PT’s, and hares ears for good profiles of a mayfly nymph.
Crystal olive caddis larva & olive zebra midges are also good choices for a lower fly imitation of  caddis larvae or midge larva.
Have some hi-vis caddis adults & hi-vis para mayfly adults for the late morning hatch.
Streamer fishing is fair using heavy sinking tip lines and Loebergs, Punk Perch, & Crystal leeches, & Spruce-a-bu’s.

PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish.
Mealworms or nightcrawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR AND THE GORGE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Pleasant Valley Reservoir
Levels are fluctuating a bunch, not practical for me to update it daily, check the LADWP link on my resources page here.  If your timing is right during non-hydro power generation, you can clock them in the small river section above the lake.  With flows dropping the high water cycles will have less duration and one can get into some great dry fly or dry dropper bead head fishing in the river section.
Tubing the inlet can be productive using streamers like Loebergs, Agent Orange, crystal leeches, & Spruce-A-Bu’s with a heavy sinking tip, or full sinking type 4 line.
The Gorge can be very good this time of year if they lower flows back to 32 CFS.  Dry/dropper bead head nymph combos with hi-vis para mayflies and hi-vis caddis dries as the upper; assassin birds nest or flashback PT’s #18-20 as the nymphs. Caddis/mayfly adult patterns are the correct selections while working in the channel casting upstream.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake is at 38 percent capacity and has been fishing well!
Fishing outside the inlets and around the dam has produced the best results.
Smallmouth fishing here has been great in the evening hours!

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Releases out of Keswick Reservoir are around 9,151 CFS as of this writing. Flows are coming up just a little at a time.
Fishing has been good one day, tough the next.
We have been into rainbows throwing dry and dropper combinations.
Some of the best fishing is near sunset.
The evening caddis hatches have been awesome. Lot's of PMDs coming off mid day. In the right spot, you will be casting to rising fish.
A few of the hot flies have been #18 Super Flash PTs, TB Peaches & Cream, Bat Wing Emerger, Yellow Eggs, Micro Mayflies in brown and black, #16-18 BH Pheasant Tail Nymphs.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been good in the mornings. Slow mid day, then ovipositing Golden stones can be found feeding rainbows at sunset.
Little Yellow Stones are also prominent in the waters above Pollard Flat and into Dunsmuir.
It's easy to spend an entire day fishing from the lower river all the way up into Dunsmuir.
We expect good fishing to be the norm through June and into July.

Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
San Joaquin River 6/22/14
Run-off is not bad and the river is flowing clear and very fishable. Fishing has been superb!  Attractor dry patterns like Stimulators, hi-vis para bwo’s & caddis are good choices that are easier to see in the plentiful pocket water that defines the SJR. Use a bead head flashback PT or assassin birds nest as a dropper in the deeper pools and runs.

SAN JOAQUIN RIVER/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Flow is now down to 50 CFS and fishing is good. Try an attractor like a stimulator or a coachman with a para Adams as a dropper.
All the camp grounds are now open and crowds have increased.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Try for trout around Toupee Island with chrome and watermelon Apexs at 20 and 40 feet.
Set your downriggers at 80 and 120 feet trolling both rolled shad and anchovies for kings between 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 pounds.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Kokanee fishing here has been great, but with water levels at 30% capacity (that's correct) it's a must to have 4-wheel drive to launch and even that's been risky!
Rick Kennedy and John Minnis still reporting good Kokanee action with fish ranging in the 12-13 inch range in the top 25-40 feet of water but some larger fish are being taken around the island in 45-55 feet of water.
Another hot spot has been off the boat launch when water depth reaches 35-45 feet.
Spinners, Hoochies, and Radical Glow Tubes have been go to lures in colors with pink, orange, and Purple.
Best Dodger colors have been copper with any Orange and Pink in it!
Look for Macks underneath these schools of Kokes and some larger ones still hanging out in the deeper sections of the lake around the dam.
Trout fishing has been best in the coves up and down from the campgrounds and boat ramp.
Smallmouth fishing has been sporadic in the Davis Creek arm but some of those that are being caught have been pretty nice!

LAKE TAHOE:
A report of limits of average sized Mackinaw Trout being caught on silver flasher blades and minnows, trolled at depths of 100-300 feet on the west side of the lake near Homewood, California.

LAKE TAHOE:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fishtightlines.com) report:
6/19/14 Lake Tahoe Kokanee Fishing
We fished Lake Tahoe today with John and Scott Harmer. We launched at Cave Rock and ran over to the South Shore in search of Kokanee. We found a couple small schools and landed a few up to 18″. I was surprised to hook fish from 30' to 75'. The Kokanee were caught on Sep’s 4/0 dodgers and RMT Assassin Spinners tipped with Natural Pautzke Fire Corn.
On the way back we stopped in front of Cave Rock and made a couple passes for Mackinaw.
We landed one per pass on Glow spoons in 200′ of water.

TRUCKEE RIVER, BIG, CALIF AND NEV:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
California:
Great weather again this week, but with the wind in the late morning and afternoon don't let it spoil your day.
Fish have moved into the fast water so start working on your high sticking technique!  Fish big Stones, Little yellow stoneflies, more PMD's, and more Caddis now with the warmer temps and water temps on the rise.
Ants are still a staple so don't go without some of these patterns if you fish during the day!
With the high flows being seen below Boca it's time to think about using your high water techniques!
More activity of fish feeding just under the surface above the Glenshire stretch and down to the Boca outflow.
Try a Large stimi or a Humpy and trail a small bead nymph or soft hackle a couple of feet behind and see what happens.
Lots going on right now as fish are found everywhere in the river system, so get out if you have a chance and fish.
Hatches this time of year will consist of Midges, little yellow stones, PMD'S, Caddis, Golden Stones, and now the Green Drakes are going off in the last hour of the evening below the Boca Outflow to State line.
Nevada:
Caution!  If you do fish the Truckee in Nevada please be aware that New Zealand Mudsnails have been found in sections of water there so please clean your shoes and gear accordingly to avoid aquatic hitch hikers!
Study the water and turn rocks and see what is going on, also seine for what is in the drift.  Little things like this and slowing your approach to the river’s edge will greatly increase your chances of being successful.
Again, make sure your box is stocked with every conceivable stage of bugs that are present now!  (x) = drawer number.

TRUCKEE RIVER, LITTLE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:

June 23, 2014
The Twins are fishing pretty well these days also, trolling with 4 to 6 colors of lead core is producing some nice rainbows, bait fishing with power bait, mice tails, pinched crawlers and night crawlers has been good too. The fly anglers are doing well with streamers like matukas, wooly buggers and seal buggers. Dropping a zug bug, prince or other small attractor midge off your streamer is also a good bet!

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
June 23, 2014

June 23, 2014
The East is running at 79 CFS today and has been there for a few days now.
We've been getting some pretty good reports from both the California and Nevada sides of the river this week though I'd say the fishing isn't easy, you're going to have be on your game!
Also we had some pretty good reports from the "Miracle Mile" section of the river as well as down below the bridge.
Caddis nymphs have done well this week, as well as small midge patterns and some streamers down on the Nevada side.
Patterns to try: dead drift crayfish, jj special, sculpzilla, zuddler, buckskin caddis, z wing caddis, fox's poopah, 3 wire caddis, rainbow warrior, san juan worm, silver streak, flashback emerger, dark lord, copper john.
Sceirine Ranch:
June 23, 2014
The Sceirine is still fishing pretty well also, there's been some streamer action as well as some dry/dropper action and nymph action. Add a hopper and a chubby chernobyl to the list above and you'll have it covered!
Hunewill Pond:
June 23, 2014
The Hunewill is fishing excellent this week, the pond is full and the weeds are down still and the fish are happy!
Stripping streamers has been good as well as fishing a couple midge droppers off a dry.
It's beneficial to try to target cruising fish on the pond which is pretty fun!
Patterns to take out there include seal buggers, stillwater nymphs. matuka, soft hackle, ap emerger, humpy, para adams, madam x, rojo midge, zebra midge and rainbow warrior.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:

WALKER RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
June 23, 2014
The West is fishing well but remember to try to be in stealth mode while you're up there! The water is clear and the fish can be a bit spooky.
Small spinners like panther martins and rooster tails are doing well, bait anglers are using salmon eggs, mice tails and power worms.
Fly anglers are going with humpy's, hoppers, madam x, prince, pheasant tail, hare's ear and small buggers.

WALKER RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:

Stick to the Pickle Meadows section, or larger slower pools.
