Here's what's happening Monday:
— Carson City Fire Department to conduct structure fire training exercise Monday and Tuesday. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Carson City Fire Department will be conducting a live fire training exercise at a vacant structure located on the Carson City Public Works Corporate Yard, June 17 and June 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Residents and those who work in the area may observe large amounts of smoke. There is no need to be concerned, this training is in a controlled setting and secured to a confined area. The goal of the training is to equip firefighters with the skills and knowledge needed to tactically respond to structure fires. In addition, the training is intended to quicken fire suppression efforts while exposing firefighters to challenges they may face in the field.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.
— Open Studio Basic Painting at Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. Classes: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m.; located in the Painting Studio. 449 West King Street, Carson City.
— Nevada Artists Association Presents: Spirit of America. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Spirit of America is a judged show with ribbons for the Spirit of America winner, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and honorable mention winners in each category. The reception and awards presentation will be Saturday, June 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. 449 West King Street.
— Carson City's Food For Thought to provide daily no cost lunches for kids this summer. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon. In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18. Lunch must be eaten onsite and will be served daily, Monday thru Friday, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Carson City starting Monday, June 17 until August 9. This year only one serving location is available and will take place at The Bridge Church at 901 N. Stewart Street, Carson City. The Summer Lunch Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school.
— Possible 2020 mayoral candidate to speak at Carson City Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be mayoral aspirant Aaron Sims. He will expound upon his vision for Carson City and what he hopes to achieve if elected as the city's next mayor. A native of California's central valley, Aaron has been a Nevadan since 2003. He moved to Carson City in 2010 to attend WNC. He has worked as a family services coordinator and has volunteered for outreach programs at his church, the Salvation Army, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, ACTIONN, and Our Center of Reno. As a non-paid lobbyist, he advocated for transparency and openness in government on behalf of the Nevada Legislative Affairs Council. Since childhood he's been involved in grass roots organizations and campaigns of both major parties. His most recent political involvement has been focused on the issues of poverty, unemployment and housing. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City's Democratic headquarters. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome.
— Carson City Parks and Rec offers summer bicycling programs for children, teens. 4:30 p.m. The Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camps program returns for a second summer. Last year, Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space offered it for a one-week trial, and it was so popular that there was a waiting list to join. This year we are offering three weeks of the camp, two of the weeks are for beginners and the last camp, in August is for intermediate bikers who participated in the camp in one of the beginner weeks either this summer or last summer. Because this program is volunteer ran, it allows us to keep the costs to the participant much lower, for only $35 for the week. A similar camp elsewhere would cost significantly more. Additionally, Bike Habitat has supported the program by donating time to fix up our fleet of bikes so we have a limited supply of bikes available for participants who don’t have access to a bike. There is no additional charge to use one of our bikes, we just want to get kids out on the trails. The camp dates are June 17-21 (beginner), July 15-29 (beginner), and August 12-16 (intermediate). All camps will be out at the trailhead for Ash Canyon on the corner of Foothill and Winnie. The camps run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day. You can go here to register for any of these programs and many more.
— Carson City Celebrates Pollinator Week 2019 with series of interpretive programs. 5:30 p.m. Join Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space to learn about the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles with a number of free interpretive programs. On Monday there is a Pollinator Interpretive Hike, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the Longview Trail, 2649 Kings Canyon Road. Then there's a Pollinator Tot Trek, Wednesday, June 19, 10 a.m. to noon at Carson River Park and Pollinator Garden Planting on Saturday, June 22, 9 a.m. to noon at the Foothill Garden, 1535 Medical Parkway. Download the iNaturalist App and submit observation each day of Pollinator week to be featured on social media.
