Carson City's Food For Thought to provide daily no cost lunches for kids this summer
In a last minute announcement, Carson City based non-profit Food For Thought, Inc. will continue the Summer Lunch Program during the 2019 season. The program provides free and nutritious lunches to all children under 18.
Lunch must be eaten onsite and will be served daily, Monday thru Friday, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. in Carson City starting Monday, June 17 until August 9. This year only one serving location is available and will take place at The Bridge Church at 901 N. Stewart Street, Carson City.
The Summer Lunch Program provides meals to area children who are unable to access other lunch programs during the months off from school. The 2018 program saw a drop off in the number of program participants. This coupled with a lack of grant funding for the coming year prompted organizers to discontinue the summer program for 2019.
However, Food For Thought, Inc. was approached by various children’s organizations in the community which requested continuation of programming. In an effort to fill various identified voids, Food For Thought, Inc. partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The partnership will provide partial funding for the continuation of the 2019 Summer Program.
Food For Thought, Inc., is anticipating a shortfall of over $8,000 in fulfilling program requirements and is asking for your assistance. Cash donations and Costco gift cards are being sought. Donations can be made online at: NVFoodForThought.org, by mail or drop off at: 3246 N. Carson St., Suite 118.
Children do not need to be enrolled in any program at the meal site. However, adults are not eligible for these federally funded meals. Additionally, meals must be eaten at the serving site and cannot be carried away.
“Food For Thought is gearing up to once again fill a need in our community. We are pleased to provide the 2019 Lunch Program. We are making our last minute arrangements to meet our June 17th start date, and any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Help us continue to serve our area children.” said Marlene Maffei, Executive Director of Food For Thought.
