The buzz around Carson City as designated Bee City No. 76

You might have heard that Carson City is now a Bee City. But what does that mean, how did it happen, and how can you help?

What happened is that a small group of committed beekeepers decided to approach the city with the idea, and then worked tirelessly for two years with Carson City Board of Supervisors and Mayor Bob Crowell to develop an organization committed to protecting pollinator habitat within the city boundaries.

What to do when you find a bee swarm in Carson City, Gardnerville and beyond

Spring has sprung and new green leaves are starting to push through, along with the first flower buds on fruit trees, and the always too-early daffodils that pop up before first frost ends. Soon the pastures will be green again and Spring and Summer flowers will come through and liven up our region.

No artificial ingredients for Sierra Lutheran alum, Carson City woman interning at Hive

Counting all the bees in this Hive might be more than Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh bargained for.

If only there was an app to somehow account for the over one million worker bees connected to Hive, the world’s first full-stack artificial intelligence company, heavily capitalized by PayPal Founder Peter Thiel, they just might get back to Pooh Corner in time to chase all the clouds in the sky.

JoAnne Skelly column: The importance of fall cleanup

JoAnne Skelly column: Tired of Gardening Yet? Prepare now for the first frost

About this time of year, I find my interest in gardening waning a bit. For one thing, it’s hot. For another, it’s already September and the first frost may not be far off, so why bother. In years past, I reminded people to expect the first frost around September 15 in most areas.

Winner of CarsonProud essay contest thankful to be living here

Carson City is a very special place and, as the city continues to grow and prosper, many are looking to relocate here for a myriad of reasons.

Through the years, Carson City has changed. There have been good times and there have been times that, as Thomas Paine wrote, “have tried men’s souls.” We’ve lost some historic and iconic structures but have bounced back in the good times. The biggest recent changes occurred in 2016 with the reimagining of the downtown core that continues today.

JoAnne Skelly: We have apple trees that did not have blossoms this spring

A reader sent me a question. “We had an arborist trim our apple tree in March and this is the first year in at least 20 years that the tree had no blossoms. Is this situation common or did we do something wrong?” Neither of my apple trees had flowers this year either. I had assumed a late freeze had caused this because often my trees bloom, then there is a freeze and the flowers wither and die. However, this year there weren’t any flowers at all.

JoAnne Skelly column: What’s wrong with my lilac leaves? The answer may be insects

I bumped into my friend Cat at a nursery buying marigolds to solve a problem her lilacs were having. She said something was eating the leaves along the edges leaving sharp-edged cutouts. She said someone swore that marigolds planted around the base of the shrubs would solve the problem.
