Carson City Parks and Rec offers summer bicycling programs for children, teens and adults
Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will offer two bicycle programs this summer, one designed for children and the other for adults and teens.
The Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camps program returns for a second summer. Last year, Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space offered it for a one-week trial, and it was so popular that there was a waiting list to join.
This year we are offering three weeks of the camp, two of the weeks are for beginners and the last camp, in August is for intermediate bikers who participated in the camp in one of the beginner weeks either this summer or last summer.
We have had a lot of community support for this program that we are really grateful for. The camp is run completely by volunteer coaches from the Carson High Cycling Team.
Because this program is volunteer ran, it allows us to keep the costs to the participant much lower, for only $35 for the week. A similar camp elsewhere would cost significantly more.
Additionally, Bike Habitat has supported the program by donating time to fix up our fleet of bikes so we have a limited supply of bikes available for participants who don’t have access to a bike. There is no additional charge to use one of our bikes, we just want to get kids out on the trails.
The camp dates are June 17-21 (beginner), July 15-29 (beginner), and August 12-16 (intermediate). All camps will be out at the trailhead for Ash Canyon on the corner of Foothill and Winnie. The camps run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day.
The coaches do a great job and focus on the fundamentals of turning, braking, and body position for the best balance. By the end of the week, participants will be ready for a trail ride with the group.
Summer Cycling Series
This will be a new program offered this summer for adults, or teens with a participating adult. This program is designed for people who want to get out, exercise, experience nature, and perhaps want to go with a group who knows the trails and has arranged transportation.
There will be two separate biking trips this summer. The first will go along the Truckee River Legacy Trail. This is a mostly paved, 5 mile trail along the Truckee River through and just outside the town of Truckee. Transportation will be provided. This will be a great evening ride to get out after work on a weekday. This trail ride will be on July 11, from 5:30 to 9 p.m.
The second trail is a section of the Tahoe Shoreline trail along the lake and then following the Truckee River outside Tahoe City. This 12 mile trail will finish at the Olympic Village where participants will have time to grab some food in the Olympic village, or they can pack a snack and eat along the river. This trip will be on Saturday, August 10 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. We want to make sure to leave early and beat the summer crowds in Tahoe.
Transportation is provided for both trips. If you don’t have a bikes, you can rent one from the Parks and Recreation Department for $10.
