Events around Carson City for Wednesday, May 22

Heading into the middle of the work week, Wednesday, May 22, there's no short supply of places to go and things to do around Carson City. Sure you may want to pull out your parkas or sweaters for the day. All the more reason to take in those rays of sunshine when the clouds break. — Northern Nevada Development Authority's Business Edge to focus on The Next Step: Workforce Retention and Succession. 7:30 a.m. The May series of Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge will focus on "The Next Step: Workforce Retention and Succession" on Wednesday, May 22, at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. NNDA’s The Business Edge is a monthly educational series providing information on issues and trends of interest to the northern Nevada business community. A combination of breakfasts and lunches, these monthly briefings offer opportunities to network with local business executives and management teams, elected and government officials, key workforce development leaders, and important nonprofit organizations. — Historic commission 2019 Carson City Scavenger Hunt. Daily until May 31. In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together. Participants will be given clues about people, places and events that are important to the community’s history. Using the clues, participants will research and locate the answers. To ensure participants visit the various sites, on-site photographs will be required with the submittals.
Completed answers are due by 3 p.m. May 31, 2019. Answers may be submitted in person at 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City or emailed to planning@carson.org. A winner will be drawn from the correct submittals to receive a $50 gift card to The Fox Brewpub, located in the Historic Saint Charles Hotel at 310 South Carson Street.

— Nevada Arts Council Presents: Bits and Pieces of the Silver State. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reno artist Patricia Wallis has a background in plein air painting as well as aerial painting working on canvas, board and copper. Over the past decade she has worked exclusively on copper which gives the image a unique luminescence not found when working with canvas or board. Oil painting on copper goes back to the 15th century although it is rarely used by contemporary artists. Bits and Pieces of the Silver State feature the various elements of nature and provide conceptual basis inn Wallis’ paintings. Go here for more information about Nevada Arts Council.

— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. For more details contact the Brewery Arts Center or by calling 775-883-1976.

— 24 to graduate Nevada's Peace Officer Standards and Training; Douglas sheriff to keynote. 10 a.m. The Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training announced Wednesday that 24 graduates from 16 agencies from around the Silver State will accept their peace officers’ oath as the POST Academy Class 2019-01. The graduation ceremony highlights Sheriff Daniel Coverley, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as the keynote speaker along with POST Executive Director, Michael Sherlock. Chief Jason Soto, POST Commission Chairman and Chief of Reno Police Department, will administer the peace officers’ oath for all 24 graduates. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of POST Building 6, at the Stewart Facility; which is located at 5587 Wa Pai Shone Avenue, in Carson City.

— Reminder for those RSVP'd: Carson City Soroptimist to present annual awards and scholarships. Noon to 1 p.m. Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors. Soroptimist believes education is the pathway to economically empowering women and girls. The Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. This year award recipients are Michelle Powers and Lyssa Phillips. Also in the program, Carson City Soroptimist Girls of the Month are high school seniors recognized for exemplary academic achievement, participation in school activities, and community service. Many of these girls have overcome adversity to become leaders in their schools and our community. In addition to recognition at a Club meeting, each girl joins decades of girls so honored, having her name added to the plaques located at Carson High School. The names of this year's winners are located in the link above. The recipient of the Girl of the Year scholarship goes to Crystal Vargas, who was also named earlier this month as one of three of this year's U.S. Presidential Scholars from Nevada.

— Don't Punish Pain Rally May 22 at Nevada Legislature in Carson City. Noon. The fourth “Don’t Punish Pain Nationwide Rally” will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019. This rally recognizes those who suffer from chronic illness. The gathering will take place at the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City, from noon to 2 p.m.

— Basic Pottery Skills at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes. 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis — no monthly commitment necessary. — Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 p.m. Intermediate Level Class, 7 p.m. Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class​. Then after your dance lesson, just for us food and drink specials offered across the street at Battle Born Social! The dance floor is open, music will be playing and you can continue dancing and practicing your dance moves! The Salsa Social will cost NOTHING, only but your support to the restaurant and bar. — Nevada Artists Association Presents: Landscape Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop in and enjoy the diverse artwork on display from Nevada Artists Association (NAA) Members with featured artist Walter Daniels. With a current membership of 120-plus, boasting over 30 new members in the past few months alone, this show promises to be one for the books. — Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
