The school districts of Nevada have long-faced critically thin budgets, but the impact of the pandemic has further increased those stresses. Locally, three school districts received extra funds today to help ease that stress, courtesy of Carson City Toyota.

As the 2020-21 school year continues, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada is packed with learning programs and exciting activities for kids of all ages.

The Carson City location at 1870 Russell Way is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with dozens of hands-on programs. Spots inside the building are limited to 135 kids each day, but countless activities will be held throughout the year.

Last week, the Carson City School Board approved the school district's Reopening Plan, which includes a hybrid schedule or a fully distance-learning program, as well as agreeing to push the start date to begin Monday, Aug. 24.

Parents need to submit their intent of preferred learning for their students by Wednesday Aug. 5 so that their student's school will know how to prepare.

The Carson City School District School Board of Trustees approved the district’s proposed School Reopening Plan Tuesday night by a 4-3 vote. The trustees also voted to update the 2020-2021 Academic School Calendar, moving the official first day of school for students to begin Monday, Aug. 24, a week later than the day previously set for Monday, Aug. 17.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

The Carson City School District will hold its next school board meeting in Senator Square inside Carson High School this Tuesday, April 23 beginning at 6 p.m.

Agenda items include an award ceremony, announcements, upcoming activities at the high schools and more.

Kindergarten registration and possible action to approve proposed changes to the Carson City School District Policy 510, Health Examinations to be topics of discussion at the Carson City School District board meeting 7 p.m. April 9 in the Sierra Room at the Community Center located at 851 East William Street.

Recently, SkillsUSA had its Regional Photography Competition, and all five participating CHS students are going to State. SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college, and middle school students across the nation in trade training programs and technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Good day Carson City and welcome to the middle of the work week. Today is Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019. We're looking at mostly sunny skies ahead today and for the remainder of the week, with highs in the low 50s today and warming into the mid 50s through Sunday.

Carson City Soroptimist will honor five Girls of the Month during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, noon until 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

This meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. There is no charge to attend, however a plated lunch with choice of entrees, selected in advance, is available for $16. Decided where to go to college yet? Filled out all the applications? Been accepted? Now what? As if that was not difficult enough, now comes the time to think about moving, what to take, what not to take, whether or not it is better to live in the dorms or get an apartment. And then there is the toughest question of all: refrigeration? College life is scary at first.

For my 2019 Senior Project, a Carson High School graduation requirement, I chose to be the coordinator and director of the annual junior cheer camp because I want to increase my knowledge and understanding on how to put on a special event; I also desire to improve my personal leadership, communication, and delegation skills.

Senior pranks are a common tradition throughout high schools around the country, and CHS is no exception. This year, CHS Seniors definitely kept the tradition going as could be seen by everyone May 31 and again June 1.

CARSON CITY — Hannah Golik, a graduating senior at Carson High School, has been named one of 630 semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2018.

The CTE program is preparing for the Wednesday, Feb. 28 Career Expo from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carson High School. This event gives Carson City School District students and their parents a picture of the Career & Technical Education options at Carson High School.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

A pair of classic and custom car shows brought out the chrome and reflective paint on dozens of unique rides featured Saturday in Carson City.

As back-to-school supplies start rolling out in stores, Sierra Lutheran High School’s administrative team is already gearing up for the school’s 16th school year. The school enthusiastically welcomes Dr. Tami Seddon, a Carson Valley native, as their new principal following the retirement of Reverend Juls Clausen. Dr. Seddon, a UC Davis and Stanford alumna, has been with the school since its inception as both a teacher and academic dean.

At Western Nevada College, Anna Lisa Acosta is tasked with following Andrea Doran as director of the Child Development Center. Doran is leaving her post after serving families and caring for children in the community for 20 years.

The 2017 Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference results are in, and CHS students and staff were on fire, proving all their hard work paid off because both students and staff took many of the major award.


This event may not be as exciting as Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs triumph over the Cleveland Indians, ending a 108 year title drought, but anyone who ever attended Carson High School or Douglas High School knows that its rivalry has lasted equally as long.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public comments on proposed improvements to the existing skiing and snowboarding terrain near the top of the gondola at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

• The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
• The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
• There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.
