South Carson Street groundbreaking ceremony, International Film Festival, live music and more this weekend in Carson City region

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Combined with plenty of live music, the Carson City region is in store for a busy three days. Read on for more information.

Friday, February 28
Girl Scout Cookie 2020 Weekend Begins Friday (all day). Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada and Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend Feb. 28 through March 1. The annual occasion honors the achievements of young entrepreneurs across the U.S. and in northern Nevada — Girl Scouts who run successful cookie booths and door-to-door cookie sales as well as market their businesses online using the Digital Cookie platform.

International Film Weekend at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater (all day). Join us for the 2020 Carson City International Film Weekend, sponsored by the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, Bob Boldrick Theater and the Friends of the Carson City Library. The independent film competition winners will be shown as part of the film on Feb. 28 and 29 located on 851 E. William St.

Muscle Powered Friday Morning Walk at Mexican Ditch. 9 a.m. Meet in the Hidden Meadows trailhead parking area at 965 Buzzy's Ranch Road. Dirt trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Forest Service 'Ski with a Ranger' at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain. 1 p.m. at the top of Heavenly Gondola. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites you to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours begin at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have a waiver signed.

Miki Rae to perform at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 to 8 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Come on in and listen to Miki Rae on Friday at Bella Vita Bistro. She will be performing an array of live music for all to enjoy. Along with live music, try our tasty fish and chips too!

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects are welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

Lost Reverends at Living the Good Life. 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Friday night will be a great band with plenty of live music rockin’ Carson City. Enjoy a great dinner with cocktails and dancing at Living the Good Life!

Saturday, February 29
Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser at Carson City's Casino Fandango to Benefit Austin's House (all day). The 2020 Denim and Diamonds fundraiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 29 at Casino Fandango's Grand Ballroom in Carson City. All proceeds benefit Austin's House, our local non-profit children's shelter. The shelter cares for children ages infant to 18 who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.

Nobility Trauma Clean-Up to host grand opening in Carson City (all day). Nobility Trauma Clean-up LLC., which focuses on cleaning properties associated with death, hoarding, methamphetamine labs and general trauma, will host its grand opening on Feb. 29 at its new Carson City location, located at 2701 Conestoga Dr. No. 123.

International Film Weekend at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater (all day). Join us for the 2020 Carson City International Film Weekend, sponsored by the Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, Bob Boldrick Theater and the Friends of the Carson City Library. University of Nevada, Reno to host free clinic in Silver Springs. 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Silver Springs Senior Center, 2945 Churchill St. The University of Nevada, Reno Student Outreach Clinic will be hosting a Rural Outreach Clinic in Silver Springs this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Carson City set to break ground on South Carson Complete Streets Project. 10 a.m. at the former armory site located at 2361 S. Carson St. The community is invited to celebrate the expansion of the Carson Street improvements at the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29 and will feature construction equipment for children of all ages to explore and climb on. Speakers will include Mayor Bob Crowell and City Engineer Dan Stucky.

Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host Geocache Adventure this Saturday. 10 a.m. Meet at Riverview Park located at the East end of 5th Street. Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt with millions of caches hidden worldwide; in fact, there are hundreds of them hidden right here in Carson City. This Saturday, Feb. 29, join the Park Rangers on an interactive adventure searching for three caches hidden within Riverview Park.

Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Capital City Hoops to host no cost basketball clinic for second through eighth graders. Grades 2nd through 5th grade will be from 10 to 11 a.m. and grades 6th through 8th grade will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will be held at Carson High School, 111 N. Saliman Rd. There is a limit of 100 campers per session. All boys and girls interested in basketball, are encouraged to join the fun and show us your skills.

Carson Cars and Coffee at The Human Bean. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 3300 U.S. Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come out and enjoy your local coffee shop and have a great time with cars and friends!

Historic Photograph Presentation. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 U.S. Hwy 395 in Gardnerville. The Douglas County Historical Society has a number of historic photographs in their Roberta McConnell collection, but many of the people in the pictures go unrecognized. The museum needs the help of all old-time families, their friends, relatives and those with a good eye for history to stop by and help identify these lost legends.

Snowshoeing experience offered for young adults with cancer, multiple sclerosis. 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe in Reno. First Descents invites local young adults impacted by cancer or multiple sclerosis on a low-impact snowshoeing hike. The experience will empower participants to adventure outdoors beyond their diagnosis, reclaim their lives, connect with others doing the same and improve their long-term survivorship.

Host of 'The Hemp Show' to speak in Carson City on benefits of medical hemp. 10:30 a.m. at Rustically Divine, 410 N. Carson St. Twenty years ago Joanne Rees-Ehlinger read "The Four Hour Work Week" and it inspired her to simplify her life. She is once again taking a page out of that book, having reduced her possessions to a few boxes and traveling the world in search of adventure. She hosts a weekly "The Hemp Show" online.

March Meditation Walk. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carson River Park, 5013 Carson River Rd. Join our Community Volunteer, Kelsey Kareck, for a morning of Meditation at Carson River Park. The walk will feature two 10 minute meditation sessions and a walk along the Mexican Ditch Trail discussing the concept of Inner Prosperity. Come prepared with water, close-toed shoes, and layers. Dogs are not allowed, minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Pasta From Scratch Cooking Class at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main Street Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. We will be making fresh pasta with dough and all the right fixings on Sunday! It’s an event you don’t want to miss. $55 per person, please arrive on time for class.

Reverend Hylton at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1500 Old Hot Springs Rd. in Carson City. Reverend Hylton is an Americana Singer/Songwriter out of Atlanta but truly calling the road his home. He is currently touring the nation with his songs of relatable tales of life experiences. Heartbreak, addiction and traveling are the substance of his melodic musical, lyrical and vocal writings.

'Salute to Young Musicians' concert featured at Carson City Community Center. 3 p.m. at 851 E. William St. The concert will feature the choirs from Bordewich-Bray and Fritsch Elementary schools. The concert is free and open to all members of our community and surrounding areas.

French Wine Dinner at the Pink House in Genoa. 6 p.m. at 193 Genoa Ln. From live music to special dinners, and of course Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a winter packed full of events! UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.

The Carson City Planning Commission meeting will be held Wednesday, April 24 in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William St. at 5 p.m.

Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center and Wildcat Veterans Club invite the community to participate in a Walk for Hope on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.

Every month, the Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.

A local family and others aided in the search and location of a missing elderly woman Saturday night in Carson City.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.
