Snowshoeing experience offered for young adults with cancer, multiple sclerosis
First Descents invites local young adults impacted by cancer or multiple sclerosis on a low-impact snowshoeing hike. The experience will empower participants to adventure outdoors beyond their diagnosis, reclaim their lives, connect with others doing the same and improve their long-term survivorship.
“It’s a way for survivors of debilitating diseases to connect with nature, themselves and others who just get it,” Ashleigh Costanza, one of the volunteer leaders of the Meetups, said. “This month, we’ll get out and explore the wilderness right in our backyard, no experience needed.”
The snowshoeing trek will be held 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Feb. 29 at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe in Reno. The experience is part of First Descents Reno Monthly Meetups 2020 pilot program.
The program will provide 11 life-changing outdoor and outdoor-related Meetup adventures this year free of cost to local young adults who were diagnosed with cancer or MS between the ages of 15-39 and who are currently between the ages of 18-45.
Meetups are led by volunteers who are alumni of First Descents programs.
“Participating in a First Descents program changed my life,” Ashley Andrews, one of the volunteer leaders of the Meetups, said. “It made outdoor adventure and outdoor spaces more accessible and important to me. I am glad to help First Descents change others’ lives too.”
All eligible young adults are encouraged to attend the Meetups. There is no cost to participate, and snowshoes are provided.
Space in this month’s Meetup is limited and pre-registration is required. Those interested in attending can register at https://forms.gle/SPDX4114GpVWBVPa6. Persons in need of special accommodations or assistance should include that information when registering.
