UPDATE MONDAY: The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting this Thursday, 1 p.m. to discuss and take possible action regarding the appointment of a person to fill an anticipated vacancy in the office of Ward 3 Supervisor on the Board of Supervisors for a term that begins Jan. 4, 2021 and ends Jan. 1, 2023.

Hemp uses less water than many other crops, and its uses and popularity are growing. As a result, there is increasing interest in growing hemp in Nevada. University of Nevada, Reno Extension is now researching hemp varieties and best practices for growing it in Nevada, and offering online classes on the research findings.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors voted to create a new ordinance relating to hemp cultivation within city limits on Thursday, allowing for indoor cultivation within certain zoning districts, effectively blocking outdoor agricultural cultivation.

Carson City District Court rejects Carson City’s motion to dismiss in $15 million Tahoe Hemp case

On April 17, Carson City District Court rejected the city’s motion to dismiss the case involving Tahoe Hemp LLC.

Tahoe Hemp is suing Carson City for $15 million after the city refused to allow the company to grow hemp on the Buzzy’s Ranch property, despite an agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust.

Carson City is at the center of a legal dispute following its refusal to allow hemp to be grown on property in the Buzzys Ranch area in East Carson City. Tahoe Hemp is suing for $15 million in damages citing the city broke its agreement with the Jarrard Family Trust, which gives rights to the family to use the property for agricultural purposes.

Agriculture Department: Nevada hemp industry thriving as harvest begins fourth year

The 2019 hemp growing season is underway, and crop harvest has already begun in southern Nevada. The Nevada Department of Agriculture Hemp program began as research and development under the 2014 Farm Bill and started in 2017 with just 26 growers.

JoAnne Skelly: Hemp is a viable crop for Nevada

Recently a reader asked me about growing hemp. According to Penn State Extension, hemp was often found in early settlements and used as a fiber source. It was widely grown in Pennsylvania and other states in the 1700s and 1800s. Not only grown for fiber, its oil was used “in paints, ink, varnishes, and lamp oil.” Conestoga wagon covers and clothing were made from hemp.
