High Five Turkey Drive and More: Events around Carson City for Thursday, Nov. 14

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. Other events around the capital city include a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training graduation ceremony, a talk about earthquake preparedness hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more.

— Carson City FISH hosts 2019 High Five Turkey Drive at Carson City Nissan. 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The annual High Five Turkey Drive is happening Thursday in Carson City. Join Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, for its collection of Thanksgiving turkeys in time for the holiday. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., FISH and Carson City Nissan are collecting turkeys for Thanksgiving baskets that are given out to those in need in our community. The event is at the dealership, 2750 South Carson Street. Look for the FISH Truck. Drop off a turkey. Sides are welcome, too. Evans Broadcasting is also a sponsor. Last year, FISH provided Thanksgiving dinner for 1,732 individuals, including the dinner graciously hosted by the Carson Nugget. Too busy to shop? Donate $10 and let FISH do the shopping. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Saludos Amigos. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos", by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition will be in the gallery from now through January 29, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday. In this installation, Favela will collage imagery from famous animated films that depict Latin American culture. Using his signature "piñata style" Favela will make large scale murals with tissue paper and glue that will break down images from films like “The Three Caballeros”, “The Emperor's New Groove” and “Coco.” These films celebrate Latin American culture but through the investigation of the imagery, Favela will highlight the exoticism and Hollywood fantasy that falsely represents an entire culture. Favela, a Las Vegas native, makes work in a piñata style exploring his identity as a Latino from Las Vegas with Mexican and Guatemalan parents. He makes his work with traditional craft materials like tissue paper and cardboard, making anything from sculptures to large scale paper installations.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Constellation. 8 a.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, Constellation. Nine students from the University of Nevada Reno’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through Dec. 10, 2019 on Mondays – Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The artists include Rachael Blizzard, Tessa Clawson, Josh Galarza, Robert Ibarra, Sandra Kramp, Carla Miller, Cesar Piedra, Shara Sinatra, and Amber Skilling. — Healthy Communities Coalition meets in Yerington. 9 a.m. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ November public breakfast meeting will be in Yerington at the Boys & Girls Club’s main gym at 124 North Main Street on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. Serena Evans, Policy Specialist with the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, will be one of the guest speakers. The Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence provides statewide advocacy, education and support of the front-line organizations that help those impacted by domestic and sexual violence. They support Nevada’s direct-service organizations that help serve victims of domestic and sexual violence and their families.

— Healing Qigong Part 1: A 6 week Qigong series offered at Carson City Yoga. Offered Thursdays through Dec. 19 by instructor Deborah Stevenson at Carson City Yoga. This relaxing, six-week qigong series promotes balance and renewal, perfect for this holiday season. Healing Qigong Part 1 consists of ten easy movements with an emphasis on gathering “chi” from the universe and learning how to move energy throughout the body. The movements will be broken down step by step and each class in the series will build upon the previous one. Classes are Thursdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Nov. 7 to Dec. 19 (no class Nov 28)

— Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training at Carson City graduation ceremony. 10 a.m. The Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is pleased to announce twenty-three graduates, from fifteen NV agencies, will accept their peace officers’ oath as POST Academy Class 2019-02. The graduation ceremony will highlight POST Executive Director, Michael Sherlock and Deputy Chief Oliver Miller, Reno Police Department, will administer the peace officers’ oath for all twenty-three graduates. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m. on the front lawn of POST Building 6, at the Stewart Facility, located at 5587 Wa Pai Shone Avenue, in Carson City.

— Nevada Day art exhibit at Nevada Artists Association gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. The annual Nevada Day Art Exhibit at the Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery will be held from October 20 - January 3, 2020. The NAA Gallery is located at the Brewery Art Center at 449 West King Street. The NAA gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.

— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 10:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.

— Carson City Native and Newcomers Club talks Earthquake Preparedness. 11:30 a.m. You are invited to join our Native and Newcomers Club for a very interesting opportunity to hear about earthquake preparedness on Nov. 14th beginning at 11:30am at the Black Bear Diner inside the Max Casino. The speaker for the event will be Annie Kell from UNR Seismological Laboratory to talk about Earthquakes and Earthquake preparedness. Just the other day Carson City had a 3.1 quake again so the talk will be of interest! We look forward to meeting you. We meet at 11:30 a.m. for lunch with the meeting afterwards.

— Modern Western Square Dancing. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Square dancing is a dance for four couples (eight dancers in total) arranged in a square. It is a very social and fun way to dance. Instruction will be provided. Come by yourself or with a group of friends. The more the merrier! The class runs for 10 weeks. You can come to all or purchase a 5 class punch card. — Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park. Noon to 9 p.m. Food Truck Thursday will be held at Mills Park on the second and fourth Thursday of the month and will feature several food trucks. 1111 East William Street, Carson City.

— Muscle Powered Thursday Hike November 14 at Ash Canyon. 3 p.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. Thursday's Walk is Seven Steps and Ash Canyon trail system. Meet at the parking area at the end of Foothill Dr., off of N. Winnie Lane. Thursday hikes start at 3:00 PM and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. — LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St., Carson City.

— North Carson Area Drainage Plans to be discussed at Carson City Community Center. 5:30 p.m. Explore potential projects intended to reduce flooding in areas north of Hwy 50 East from North Carson Street east to Mound House. Carson City Community Center, 851 E William St, Bonanza Room.

— Pro Jam Night with Lester & Friends at Mangia Tutto. 6:30 p.m. A night out for pro musicians to get together and make some music. Join Brian Lester and Friends every Thursday this summer at Mangia Tutto Pizzeria on the corner of Stewart and Musser St. 6:30 to 9 p.m. Bring your instruments.

— Carson City area food drive happening now to Dec. 21 to benefit Food For Thought. Krisha Caraway with Valley Realty and Management is hosting a food drive to benefit Food For Thought in Carson City. The food drive runs now through Dec. 21 and items can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to her office in Valley Realty and Management located at 302 E William Street.

Established in 2007, Food for Thought was founded on the goal to feed hungry children on the weekend so they can return to school Monday ready to learn. Each Friday, Food for Thought provides a healthy bag of food to hungry children in Carson City, and parts of Douglas County, allowing these children to eat on the weekends and to arrive at school on Monday nourished and ready to learn. Items that are most beneficial to be accepted are:

— Carson Nugget, Food For Thought team up for children's winter coat drive. Carson Nugget and the Carson City based Food for Thought organization are hosting a coat drive for children now through Nov. 15. Organizers of this drive are asking for donations of new coats, for children ages 5 to 18, which will be distributed to children at the Kids Christmas Brunch, to be held Dec. 23 at the Carson Nugget Grand Ballroom. All coats can be delivered to Food For Thought, 3246 North Carson Street, Suite 118, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Established in 2007, Food For Thought is a nonprofit organization aimed at feeding hungry children on the weekend. — November is Diabetes Awareness Month. This month is Diabetes Awareness Month, and Carson Tahoe is hosting a variety of free diabetes wellness classes all month long! Whether you're practicing self-management for your own diabetes care, need assistance learning to help care for a loved one, or are just looking to learn more about healthy living, we're here for you every step of the way. — Ron Wood Family Resource Center looking for volunteers during the Holidays. Ron Wood Family Resource Center is gearing up for the holidays. We are looking for volunteers to help distribute food for our children and families in need. If you can spare a couple of hours or more during the week, please call Ron Wood Family Resource Center at (775) 884-2269 or stop by our office at 2621 Northgate Lane No. 62 in Carson City. There is no better gift than giving to those less fortunate.

— Urgent Care hosts food drive for the Dayton area. With Thanksgiving around the corner, Dayton Urgent Care will be collecting non-perishable items for local families now until Nov 15. Item such as boxed stuffing, gravy, canned veggies, boxed desserts, boxed potatoes, canned yams, canned soups and soup mix. In the past years we have had such a great turn out with our other drives. The Dayton community has come together and has done such a great job helping out the kids and their families. Dayton Urgent Care would like to thank the Dayton community for all of their help in times of need. For the past few years we have been working with a great person by the name of Terri Gahr. Terri makes sure that all of the items that we collect get to the families that need them. We collect items year round, we always have our collection bin in the lobby so anyone at any time can drop items off. Food items can dropped off at Dayton Urgent Care, 901 Medical Center Drive, Dayton, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you would like to help out we also collect items such as school supplies, coats, shoes, clothes and personal hygiene items. When it comes to shoes and clothes we look for items that can be used by kids K-12 grade. We will be having our Angel tree as well again this year. The tree will be going up in November. As always thank you for your help.

— Carson City family keeps Tiffani and Bailee's annual Sealed Toy Drive alive in memory. Now through Dec. 2. Tiffani Barber was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer on Dec. 8, 2012. For those who did not know Tiffani, all she ever wanted to do was help people. She carried water and snacks in her car to give to the homeless and people less fortunate than her. It came as no surprise to the people closest to her, when the social worker assigned to her case to Tiffani's hospital room and asked what she needed, Tiffani replied with, "How can I help?"
After much discussion, she found out that Lucile Packard Children's Hospital was in grave need of sealed toys for the children who have no immune system and have to brand new toys. They couldn't even leave their Hospital room. Tiffani got busy and called her sister, Bailee, to put out boxes all over Carson City to collect toys, while Tiffani got busy spreading the word on social media from her hospital bed. Tiffani had one wish: It was to please keep this Toy Drive going after she passed. That's exactly what her sister Bailee and her family have done. The Toy Drive is now underway, beginning Nov. 1, 2019 and comes to an end on Dec. 2, 2019. Please help us, help these kids! For more information or questions, contact Brad Barber at 775-721-5941.
