Carson City scavenger hunt among events statewide to mark 50th year of National Preservation Act

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Agencies and organizations in Carson City and throughout Nevada have teamed up to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Carson City Events
May 2-31: Historic Resources Commission Scavenger Hunt
This scavenger hunt is open to both adults and kids. The goal is to find all of the architectural building features from the pictures provided and give the correct address. All of the pictures are from properties located in the Carson City Historic District. Participants with all of the correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a free lunch for two at Café at Adele's.

May 21: Under the Stewart Stars
The Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance is proud to announce the inaugural “Under the Stewart Stars” fundraising event. Join them for an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the historic Stewart Indian School campus with Stewart alumni, followed by an evening of dinner and entertainment. Proceeds from the event will support the Stewart Living Legacy Project and the Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance. A limited number of tickets are available for this exclusive event.

May 2- May 27: Silver City, Nevada: Preserving a Fascinating History; Protecting a Vibrant Future
Silver City, Nevada combines a dedication for preserving its Comstock history with enthusiasm for protecting its present day character as an arts and cultural resources production center. A display at the local US Post Office will show these two intertwined parts of the community.
The display will include artifacts from historic sites in Silver City that show the town's roots in the mining boom of the 1860s, as well as samples of some of the historical and archaeological research, plus plays, art, diverse publications and music that a new wave of residents have produced over the last 60 years.

May 14: Downtown Sparks Tour
Learn about the history of the rail city with a guided walking tour of Victorian Square and Downtown Sparks. This interactive tour is designed to show how this area has transformed itself from a railroad hub, to a vibrant commercial district, to a rundown urban area and finally to a successful redevelopment area that has changed the image and future of the city. Tour the historic courthouse in Belmont, Nevada. Constructed in 1876, the Belmont Courthouse served as the county courthouse until 1905, when the county seat was moved to Tonopah.
