Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the awards for Nevada Humanities CARES: Emergency Relief Grants for Nevada Humanities and Cultural Organizations. Forty-six cultural and humanities organizations across Nevada received $368,873 in federal CARES Act grants.

Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley features their annual May historical lecture series. The public is welcome! The lectures feature local life in days’ past and will be held at the Dayton Valley Community Center, 170 Pike St, Old Town Dayton, with light refreshments at 7 and the programs begin at 7:30 pm.

Previously he worked for the State Historic Preservation offices in Idaho and South Dakota. He holds a BA in History from Occidental College and an MA in Historic Preservation Studies from Boston University.

This is an official fundraiser for the Historical Society of Dayton Valley to help preserve history in the Dayton Valley and surrounding Comstock area.

Among the events and activities today include continued voting to bring the Levitt AMP concert back to Carson City this summer, a Silver and Blue Nevada rivalry blood drive, a volunteer meeting for Toys for Tots; a showing of "Casino Boss" that was filmed this summer at the Carson Nugget starring SNL Alum Jose Piscopo, a visit by Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift in Dayton, art showings and more.

Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift are coming to Dayton, Nev. on Wednesday, Nov. 14 when the Historical Society of Dayton Valley and historian Laura Tennant presents a Power Point program with the photos of the filming of “The Misfits” on the streets of Dayton and the Stagecoach Flats in the summer of 1960.

After a spectacular sunset and the rise of the Hunter's Moon last night, you know greatness is ahead. Good morning Carson City, today is Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018. Ahead today is a morning coffee networking event, a craft fair in its 18th year at the Carson Valley Inn, a haunted hayride in Dayton, family night at RSVP's Nevada Day Carnival held through Sunday at Mills Park, a lecture on Nevada names and much more.

The Haunted Hayrides of Old Town Dayton, presented by the Historical Society of Dayton Valley, are bringing back Nevada history with spooky family fun mixed in.

It’s a very special Friday for the kids of Carson City: it’s the last day of summer vacation. Take full advantage of your free time and check out some of today’s activities. Live music at McFadden Plaza tonight features local cover band, Deception. The Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival kicks off tonight with a band in the Davis Creek Campground. The U.S. Air Force’s Jazz Ensemble performs at the Bob Boldrick Theater as part of the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Free tickets have been available at the Chamber of Commerce for a few weeks, and if any are left, their numbers will be limited.

Let’s give this outdoors thing another try. Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

Get ready for all things shiny, whether it be brass or chrome. You’ll find plenty of horns playing during the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival that kicks off today. Just about every event is free to the public and family friendly, so get ready for a melodic few weeks. The historic Bliss Mansion, across the street from the Governor’s Mansion, hosts the opening night Garden Party. Hot August Nights gets an early start in Virginia City with a show and shine and poker run; 400 classic cars are waxed up and ready to impress.

FRIDAY, August 3: Things to do in Carson City

As we head into the weekend, you’ll find a fair number of ways to get the party started. Happy Anniversary to Living the Good Life; they will be celebrating four years of good times with Deception rocking their outdoor stage. For something all ages, head down to McFadden Plaza for live music by Just for Fun. For those who prefer a spot on the stage, check out Open Mic night at A to Zen or karaoke at Whiskey Tavern. No membership is necessary for tonight’s Race for Life with Carson City BMX; all ages are welcome, just don’t forget your helmet.

What a week. I hope you’ve had the chance to catch your breath from Independence Day, we’ve got a wine walk on its way tomorrow. Tonight, head down to McFadden Plaza at Third and Carson. Tonight’s outdoor concert features the Reno Swing Set, so bring your dancing shoes. The ‘Dive-In’ Movie at the Carson Aquatic Center is a fun option for families. Artist Mimi Gomberg will be on hand at the Carson City Art Gallery for a reception celebrating some of her newest work. Read on for all of today's local happenings.

FRIDAY, July 6: Things to do in Carson City

There will be some tales told today. The Dayton Historical Society had to postpone the last lecture in their May series until tonight, so you still have a chance to hear Karen Howe’s presentation on the Dayton Cemetery and who you’ll find there. Local author Jennifer Quashnick visits the Browsers Corner Book Store for a meet-and-greet, and to discuss the latest addition to her Mountain Girl book series. Get the little ones in their jammies and head to the Carson Library for Pajama Storytime.

I hate to be a tease, but I just have to say something about this upcoming weekend. Friday night brings us the Fox Brewpub's first summer concert featuring Shane Dwight in McFadden Plaza, the Broncs and Bulls Smackdown at Fuji Park, or the kick off to Street Vibrations Spring Rally at Battle Born Harley. Saturday welcomes the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the year, the monthly Wine Walk, and Dayton’s annual Oodles of Noodles Festival and Pasta Cook-off.

Lightning in Northern Nevada, while pretty to see in the sky, can be devastating once it strikes ground. We don’t have the same negative thoughts about thunder, though, especially when talking about Blue Thunder, the award-winning band from Carson High. See what the rumble is about during their free spring concert this evening in the Bob Boldrick Theater. 3-D Printing is a brand-new technology, and almost something out of science-fiction.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. Let Chili’s take care of lunch or dinner today and you’ll be helping take care of the Boys and Girls Club, just let your server know you are there for their Give Back Fundraiser. Cyclists and pedestrians are invited to join the Ride (and Walk) of Silence this evening. It’s meant to bring awareness to safety issues faced by everyone sharing the road. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley continues their lecture series with a presentation by Laura Tennant. Learn about Dayton’s History as a Chinatown and how that contributed to the town it is today.

Bike Month in Carson City always brings fun community activities, including the annual Celebrity Invitational Bike Ride. Strap on a helmet and join some of our town’s notables on a ride through the historic west side. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery is holding a reception for Jean Kvam, whose oils, pastels, and pottery will be on prominent display. The Historical Societies in Dayton and Douglas County are hosting lectures this evening: you just have to decide between learning about the Nevada Women’s Project or artist Hans Mayer Kassel.

This week is just flying by and the weekend is just around the corner. Mothers’ Day is this Sunday and there will be plenty of ways to spoil Mom. A trip to Virginia City on the V & T Steam Train is always memorable. The annual RSVP Spring Celebration Carnival opens tomorrow in Mills Park.

The Nursing program at Western Nevada College is one of the state’s best. Attend today’s informational meeting and walk away knowing everything you’ll need to do for a career in the medical field.

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Nevada agencies and organizations have worked hard to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the Silver State, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Week than gorgeous weather that you just can’t help but enjoy. Join Muscle Powered and our Parks and Recreation Department at the Silver Saddle Ranch for a presentation and trash mob. Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

Join author Anthony Shafton in a book signing of his latest book, “The Nevada They Knew: Robert Caples and Walter VanTilburg Clark,” April 28 from 2-4 p.m. at the Dayton Senior Center, located at 320 Old Dayton Valley Road.

Don’t think that you have to wait until the weekend to find something to do. Our shiny, ‘new’ library is showing ‘Hidden Figures,’ a movie about NASA during the Space Race, and the black female mathematicians behind the scenes. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley is thrilled to bring an update about their efforts to restore the 1881 Carson and Colorado Railroad Depot. Wired Wednesday is a group of film-makers, photographers, and digital artists that is responsible for the great short film contests throughout the year. They always welcome anyone interested to join their ranks.

The countdown continues. Nevada Day is observed Friday, so get ready for an action-packed three-day weekend. Head down to Old Town Dayton for their annual Haunted Hayrides into History. You’ll find games, refreshments, Ghostly Pioneers, and it’s the perfect place for your costume. The Boys and Girls Club invites you to their ‘Lights on Afterschool’ event with an ice cream social, face painting, games, bounce house, S.T.E.M. labs and more. A Dodgeball battle at the Multi-Purpose Athletic Center raises money for Domestic Abuse Awareness.
