SILVER CITY, Nev. — The Resident Artist Program in Silver City announced that their summer visiting artist is Kerry Rossow, an Illinois-based author, performer, and co-founder of the She Said Project.

Saturday, November 2

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the second annual Evening with Divas in Carson City, a Día de Muertos celebration at the Nevada State Museum, Nevada Artists Association’s 40th anniversary celebration, paranormal ghost investigations in Virginia City, a pie baking contest in Gardnerville and much more!

The Fall visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in Silver City is Allison Rasmussen of Carson City.

Valedictorian of the 2018 graduating class at Argent Preparatory Academy, Rasmussen studied art at Western Nevada College through their early college entry program and completed her Associate of Arts degree at 18.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Poet David Lee was a visiting artist at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and will be back again this winter. His repeated stays in the historic Comstock town inspired his latest book of poems, Mine Tailings. It is dedicated to the people of Silver City. The book was released by 5 Sisters Press this Fall, and will be the focus of Lee’s reading at the Silver City Schoolhouse (community center) on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.

New York-based playwright, opera librettist, theatre critic, and arts journalist David Cote is the current visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in historic Silver City, Nev.

While he's here in August and September, he hopes to draft a 70-minute, spoken, dramatic monologue for a male performer about carpentry, family, and faith. You can learn more about his creative process during a free, public talk at the Brick at 108 E Proctor Street in Carson City this Thursday August 22, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in an event that also includes a talk by Chicago-based sculptor Nicole Beck.

Activities around the Carson City area feature a Muscle Powered hike along a portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail, Status of Women in Northern Nevada conference at the Carson Nugget, a lecture series at the Carson City BRIC, Freedom Fest Carson City GOP Barbecue at Glen Eagles, Thursday Cruise Night at Max Casino, plus afternoon and evening presentations on the Apollo Lunar Mission at the Nevada State Museum. This Thursday, July 25, the second Free Artist Lecture for the Carson City Artist Lecture Series will take place at the Brick (The Community Development Building) located at 108 E. Proctor Street. This lecture will feature three artists in two lectures: Morgan Craig of Philadelphia, Adrian Landon and Ewelina Bochenska of New York, who will be presenting together.

Good times, sunny skies, activities and more are planned around the Carson City area as we head into Thursday, July 11. SILVER CITY, Nev. — Children ages 8-12 and their parents can take part in a fun science activity this Tuesday. Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension leads his popular interactive science activity on Tuesday, July 9 from 10 to noon at the Silver City School House, 385 High Street. The activity is free and all children ages 8-12, with their parents, are invited to attend.

Silver City, Nevada - Kids ages 8-12 and their parents can don goggles and learn why there's an endothermic reaction between vinegar and baking soda in a bubbling and fun activity on July 2 in Silver City. Participants will use thermometers and observe whether heat is created or extinguished. The experiment will also help them learn about Celsius and Fahrenheit.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — A number of different groups sponsor an annual summer series of public events in historic Silver City. This summer, events include a free family-friendly concert by Kantu Inka, visits from award-winning visiting artists and writers, kids science and engineering activities, plus a floral design class, a coding workshop, lectures and more for adults and teens.

With the weather reaching the mid-80s, now is the perfect time to get out and explore during a jam-packed three days around the Carson City region. Friday has plenty of events to get you to the weekend.

Several art and music events in Carson City on Friday, June 7 are perfectly timed so you can attend all three. Drop by for appetizers and see the "Translating Silver City" art show at City Hall from 3 to 4:30 p.m., then view Capital City Art Initiative's "New Crop 2019" exhibition and meet the artists over a glass of wine at the nearby reception at the Court House Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. Finish the night with a free concert by Athena McIntyre at McFadden Plaza near The Fox Brewpub from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s recognition of the importance of arts and culture to a thriving community is very much in line with that of nearby Silver City. The Comstock town is known as an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center" due to the work residents have contributed in the fields of arts and cultural resources.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — United Way's annual "Tune into Kids" Fun Fair for preschoolers and their parents takes place Tuesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City town park, next to the Silver City School House/community center at 385 High Street. Silver City is located on the Comstock, 3 miles from Virginia City and 12 miles from Carson City.

Parents and their children ages 8-12 are invited to a fun class combining science and crafts on Tuesday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with instructor Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

Bring a lawn chair, a picnic and enjoy an evening in the Silver City Park with a blues, funk and classic rock concert by Mylo McCormick on Sunday, July 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. With the monthly Wine Walk, Pour for Paws in McFadden Plaza, and Crystal’s Crusade Street Party Fundraiser on W. Telegraph, downtown is the place to be. There are so many options this weekend, so take a gander and enjoy your weekend.

Award winning poet Gary Short is the current Resident at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City where he’s completing his fourth book of poetry. He’ll offer a poetry reading, followed by an optional, free poetry writing workshop Saturday, June 2 at 2 p.m. at the Silver City School House.

SILVER CITY — Megan Berner, the current Resident Artist in Silver City, will offer adults and teens a free "Introduction to Cyanotype” workshop during a meet and greet and free workshop on the cyanotype process on Sunday May 6, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Silver City School House (community center) at 385 High Street.

I’m going to apologize right now. I can’t anticipate what this storm system will throw at us, so some of these planned events could get cancelled. One event that is never afraid of Mother Nature is the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Come rain, shine, or blizzard, you’ll find can sip, stroll, and discover starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Carson Hot Springs aren’t afraid of a little snow, and a special visit from Megan the Mermaid will make the icy hot experience more memorable. A public reception for emerging artist Allison Rasmussen is being hosted by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City on Saturday, March 3 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the McCormick House, 142 High Street, the residence for visiting artists with the Resident Artist Program.

SILVER CITY — The Resident Artist Program in Silver City is delighted to announce that our winter visiting artist, Allison Rasmussen, is creating a permanent artwork for the Program, using Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet David Lee's poem "Silver City Dawn Psalm" as its focus.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s 2017-2018 VISTA staff member is Marielle Toll of Gold Hill, Nev.

“Marielle brings a whole host of skills and talents to the position,” said Healthy Communities’ director Wendy Madson.

The weekend is almost here, bringing with it early Halloween parties, the Advocates to End Domestic Violence ‘Light up the Dark’ Run/walk, and even more fun at the Nevada Railroad Museum. For now, you may as well enjoy the day we’ve been given.
