White Cane Days, grand opening, pool tournament and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! Read on for more information.

New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Friday, October 9
Apple Picking in Washoe Valley at Franktown Apples (all day). Franktown Apples, also known as Apple Basket U-Pick Apple Orchard, will be open every day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m from Sat., Sept 19 through Oct. 19 or until apples are gone. Franktown Apples is located at 7425 Franktown Road in Washoe Valley.

Hauntober Returns to Virginia City (all day). Virginia City will be packed with month-long events through October in the spirit of Halloween. As one of the most haunted destinations in the country, Virginia City is the perfect place to get spooked this October. Celebrate the supernatural and all things unexpected with an entire month of events including the outhouse races, ghost tours, safe trick-or-treating, a goblin parade and a family fun Thomas the and Friends excursion on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 10 a.m., noon, 2p.m. and 4 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Free Skin Cancer Prevention Screenings. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness Institute, 1470 Medical Pkwy Suite 250. Did you know that skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers? It’s estimated that over one million Americans develop some type of skin cancer every year. Overexposure to sunlight (including tanning) is the main cause, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Avoiding the sun is your best defense, but when you can’t, have your skin checked by a professional on a regular basis.

Dancing Class at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio. 3 p.m. at 315 N. Carson St. Dance it off everybody! No partner needed. Learn dance steps to all Ballroom and Latin dances. A Mix of mini dance routines and line dances.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Live Music at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St.

Autumn Hike at Morgan Mill Road in Carson City. 10 to 11:30 a.m. Fall is in the air and it is the perfect time of the year to get outdoors! Saturday, October 10th 2020 at 10:00am at Empire Ranch! Park at the Morgan Mill River Access off of Morgan Mills Road. Online registration is required. Space is limited, so be sure to register as soon as possible.

Carson City Library hosts virtual 'Girls Who Code' program. 11 a.m. via Zoom. Visit the link for more information. Join us for a new program, Girls Who Code! Gain future job skills, promote STEM interest, foster camaraderie and inspire confidence, all while learning the basics of coding.

Grand Opening for 'Wizard of Pawz' new grooming salon in Carson City. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 190 W. Winnie Ln. A socially-distanced Grand Opening of a new grooming salon, "Wizard of Pawz" in Carson City will be held on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The grand opening will include food, drinks and a goodie bag for your pup! Masks are required.

Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Saturday from 11:00 am-3:00 pm we will provide minting demonstrations in the Historic Carson City Mint Building. Witness Coin Press No. 1, a 150 year old coin press, mint .999 fine silver commemorative medallions in the same building it produced.

Nevada Artists Association Autumn Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artist Association is proud to present the 2020 “Autumn Show” and the beautiful works of Featured Artists Karen Kreyeski and Maggie Stillwell. All the work in these shows is from Nevada Artist Association members. These shows are open to the public through Oct. 23rd. NAA is the largest Fine Arts Gallery in the Carson-Tahoe area featuring work from over 140 Northern Nevada artists, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, gourds, jewelry, textile art, glass, pottery, prints, cards and more.

8 BAll Pool Tournament at Bulldog Billiards. 6 p.m. at 251 Jeanell Drive Suite No. 9 in Carson City. We are hosting a pool tournament with safety guidelines! Double Elimination with a $12 buy in Sign-up begins at 5 p.m. with free practice for participants.

Carson City Symphony opens 37th season with virtual celebration of capital city history (all day). The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 37th season with a virtual community music and dance project celebrating Carson City history, the “Hank Monk Schottische” virtual performance project. Instrumental musicians and dancers of all ages are invited to participate.

Our 2nd annual "Diamond Strong" Tailgate Gala will be held virtually on October 11, 2020, which will include a live watch party with a "tailgate" theme and online bidding. We are committed to raising funds to come alongside women who need to know we see them, believe in them, and that together we can help them become Diamond Strong! The monies raised will benefit our local community by providing positive resources to women who have endured difficult life experiences.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Carson City is a Bee City USA affiliate, the first in the state of Nevada. Bee Cities are a part of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. "Bee City USA’s mission is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants and free to nearly free of pesticides.”

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.
