Crowds have often flocked to the major corporate retailers in Carson City for the best deals of the season, and in recent years, stores have begun to open earlier and earlier for a leg up, breaching into Thanksgiving day. However this year, many stores are finally closing their doors on Thanksgiving Day, and more bargain hunters are turning to online deals for their holiday shopping.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The Nevada Day Golf Tournament in remembrance of Mayor Bob Crowell will be held at Silver Oak Ranch Golf Course on Saturday. Dozens of fundraisers, including the Benson’s Feed 4 Paws 4-H group, will be scattered throughout the Carson City and Gardnerville areas. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! Saturday, October 10th and Sunday, October 11th, have been designated “White Cane Days” by the Carson City Host Lions Club.

Lions will be available at the North Carson Street Save Mart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds as part of the annual White Cane Days.

Save Mart Stores has donated $2,051 to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center in Carson City for emergency food relief for families.

Carson City Fire Department responded early Wednesday evening to a reported gas leak at a South Carson Street grocery store. The gas smell was determined to be coming from a semi-truck that had blown a tire.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

The public is invited to attend the 20th annual Feast of Chocolate Event hosted by the American Association of University Women on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carson Plaza and Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street, Carson City.

Heading into the last day of October and you know what that means: Happy Halloween! Best to bundle up under the costumes as Thursday will be another chilly day, though warmer than Wednesday. There are a number of prescription drug roundups happening this Saturday, Oct. 19 around the region, including drop-off stations in Carson City, Douglas County and Dayton.

These annual events help protect the community with proper disposal of unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, prescription liquids, pet medications, syringes and more. The effort is part of the federal drug round-up initiative.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a suspect allegedly involved in elder exploitation. The suspect used an elderly woman's debit card, made several purchases and withdrew several hundred dollars in cash.

As part of the federal Drug Roundup initiative, Partnership Carson City will set up drug roundup stations 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in front of both Save Mart Supermarkets, 3620 N. Carson and 4348 S. Carson streets; Smith’s Food & Drug Store, 559 E. William St.; and FoodMaxx, 3325 Highway 50 East.

Drake Dembke has lost two friends to opioid overdose. One was dropped off by his friends in front of the emergency room, the other was left by the side of the road.
“As a recovering heroin addict myself, I’ve seen what it does,” he said. “It sucks.”

Carson City’s Save Mart donated $4,306 to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center on Friday after collecting donations from the community during the holiday season.

Save Mart and FoodMaxx grocery stores have launched a fundraiser to collect monetary donations for The Salvation Army and its relief efforts in Butte County, Calif., affected by Camp Fire.

Shoppers can donate any amount at checkout and 100 percent of the proceeds will aid local victims. The donation will be printed on the receipt, so shoppers have a record of their tax deductible donation.
