Healthy Communities hosts breakfast meeting Thursday in Silver Springs

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties holds a public breakfast meeting every other month. The next meeting is Thursday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center.

Guest speakers include Ashle Doran, who will give a presentation on Comstock Youth Works' successful summer job skills and paid internship program for teens throughout Lyon County.

White Cane Days, grand opening, pool tournament and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

USDA partners to provide transitional housing for rural people in recovery from opioid misuse

On International Overdose Awareness Day, Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett announced Friday that USDA has formalized an innovative agreement in which a nonprofit organization will purchase homes from the Department and convert them to transitional housing for people recovering from opioid misuse.
