Events around Carson City for Thursday, Sept. 19
Coming up on the final stretch of the work week, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019 is shaping up to be eventful around the capital city area, including a morning Tahoe Rim Trail hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Status of Women in Nevada meeting at the Carson Nugget, activities at the library including the first in a series of Job Seeking With Google workshops, plus the first of the three-day Rockabilly Riot car show at Mills Park and more. Here's what's happening Thursday:
— Muscle Powered Thursday Morning Hike at Tahoe Rim Trail. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City and Lake Tahoe. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at www.musclepowered.org/calendar. The Thursday morning hike is at the Tahoe Rim Trail section beginning on north side of Highway 50 at Spooner Summit. Meet at the Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool up to the Spooner Summit trailhead. Thursday morning hikes start at 8 a.m. and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended If weather conditions are bad hikes will be cancelled. Check www.musclepowered.org/calendar or Facebook. — Board of Supervisor's meeting to discuss several new Carson City subdivision plans. 8:30 a.m. The upcoming Board of Supervisor’s meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. On the table for discussion are grant funding for the Sheriff’s Office, a new public guardian, and several new subdivision discussions.
— Capital City Arts Initiative debuts 'Constellation' exhibit. Daily 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, announces its exhibition, "Constellation" at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from the University of Nevada Reno’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program have work in the exhibit. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, Sept. 20, 5 to 6:30 p.m. The free exhibition is available to the public now to Dec. 10, 2019, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Sharon Rosse, CCAI Executive Director, said “CCAI is delighted to work with our partner schools and to present this exhibition of UNR’s students’ work. We are proud of the professional level of the students’ art and of the faculty who encourage and nurture their imaginations and skill levels.” This show is another in CCAI’s ongoing series of student exhibitions in the Brick.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop.
— Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery Autumn Membership Show, now through Oct. 18. Enjoy artwork from our member artists. Membership has risen to nearly 150 local artists during our 40th year operating as a gallery. The Autumn Membership show runs from Sept. 8 to Oct. 18 at Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery at 449 W. King Street in Carson City. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Also, save the date, Nov. 3 as the association will be hosting its 40th anniversary celebration on location at the Gallery, 2-4 p.m.
— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. Two sessions. 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.
— Status of Women in Nevada meeting at the Carson Nugget. Noon. The Status of Women in Nevada will host their monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19 starting at 12 noon at the Carson Nugget in Carson City. We will be sitting at the high table in the Alatte Coffee Shop. There are no membership fees, however, we do pass a cup around for donations. — LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St., Carson City.
— Hot rods, rat rods and more: Rockabilly Riot returns to Carson City. 5 to 9 p.m. Hot rods, rat rods, souped up trucks and the men and women who made them will be making their way into the capital city this week for the annual Rockabilly Riot which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday at Mills Park. The vehicle spectacle, now in its 9th year in northern Nevada and fourth consecutive year in Carson City, isn't to be missed as some of the most inventive, intriguing, hot rods and classic cars will be on display at the park, with a number of events planned. This is a free event and is open to the public, all three days, Thursday through Saturday. Thursday's events and showings run from 5 to 9 p.m. Mills Park is located at 1111 East William Street, Carson City.
— Summer 2019 Artist Lecture Series: 5 to 6:30 p.m. Free to the public. Featured artists Gina Miccinilli and Laura Buchan will be presenting for 45 minutes each. BRIC building, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City. See the artists websites: Gina Miccinilli and Laura Buchan.
— Carson City's CASA to host Thursday volunteer information hour and training. 5:30 p.m. Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse or neglect. These children find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf. A CASA volunteer is a court appointed, trained and committed adult who ensures that each child's individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system. A CASA volunteer gets to know the child while also gathering information from the child's family, teachers, doctors, care-givers and anyone else involved in the child's life in order to make independent and informed recommendations to assist the Judge decide what's best for the child. There will be a volunteer training session and information hour this Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at the CASA office, 1539 East Fifth Street. — Carson City Library offers job seeker workshops. 6 to 7:45 p.m. The Carson City Library will offer a series of workshops — Job Seeking With Google — beginning Thursday. Participants will learn how to use Google Search, Sheets and Docs as career-finding tools, and discover secrets and tips for successful interviews and resumes. The workshops will be lead by JOIN Inc., and will incorporate Grow with Google and NV Career Explorer initiatives. The Carson City Library is located at 900 North Roop Street.
— Pro Jam Night with Lester & Friends at Mangia Tutto. 6:30 p.m. A night out for pro musicians to get together and make some music. Join Brian Lester and Friends every Thursday this summer at Mangia Tutto Pizzeria on the corner of Stewart and Musser St. 6:30 to 9 p.m. Bring your instruments.
