Carson City's CASA to host Thursday volunteer information hour and training
Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse or neglect. These children find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf.
A CASA volunteer is a court appointed, trained and committed adult who ensures that each child's individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system. A CASA volunteer gets to know the child while also gathering information from the child's family, teachers, doctors, care-givers and anyone else involved in the child's life in order to make independent and informed recommendations to assist the Judge decide what's best for the child.
ANYONE CAN VOLUNTEER
CASA volunteers come from all walks of life and share a commitment to improving children's lives, a willingness to learn and an open mind towards life experience's different from their own. You do not need special education, experience or background.
MAKING THE COMMITMENT
CASA volunteers commit to spending 5 to 15 hours per month on one specific case for a minimum of one year. The scheduling of activities is flexible, and you will be paired with a staff professional who supports and guides you every single step of the way.
"For children who have been abused or neglected, CASA means having a home instead of feeling lost, and being a priority instead of feeling invisible. For volunteers, CASA is a life-changing experience that makes our community a better place."
There will be a volunteer training session and information hour this Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at the CASA office, 1539 East Fifth Street. Please contact Melanie McCormick, Executive Director with any questions. Reserve your spot today! Call (775) 291-7069 (Cell) or email MelanieMcCormickCASA@outlook.com. There will also be a training and information hour at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.
