Here's what's happening today:

Carson City's annual High Five Turkey Drive. 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Organized by Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH and the Carson Nugget, curbside drop-offs on the Carson Street side of the casino are encouraged as organizers say they need 1,000 turkeys for holiday baskets and the annual Carson Nugget Thanksgiving Feast. Side canned and dried goods and food associated with Thanksgiving are also welcome. Donors can also go online and for a $10 donation, they can let FISH doing the turkey shopping for them. Donations can be made at www.nvfish.com.

Network with host Jenny Treece at Coffee Connections at Rustically Divine. 9 a.m. Join Coffee Connections host Jenny Treece, Advertising/Marketing Director, Carson Now, on Thursday mornings, from 9-10 am, at Rustically Divine, 410 N. Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care to host free seminar to help families living with Alzheimer’s. 1 p.m. Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, a new Prestige memory care center opening soon in Carson City invites families and caregivers of those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia to attend a free seminar on Thursday, Nov. 8, beginning at 1 p.m., at the Carson Nugget. The seminar will be led by internationally recognized memory care expert David Troxel, MPH, who will share strategies and advice to help families living with Alzheimer’s enjoy the holidays. Troxel is an internationally-recognized expert on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and has authored six books on the subject, including his latest publication, titled Best Friends Approach to Dementia Care, Second Edition. His expertise is rooted in a treatment philosophy he helped pioneer called the “Best Friends Approach,” which redefines how families and caregivers can enhance the lives of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Thursday Hike to Prison Hill-North hosted by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Meet in the trailhead parking area at the corner of 5th Street and Carson River Road, entrance on Carson River Road. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and sturdy or athletic shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved.

Former NHL goalie to speak at Carson City's WNC about mental health issues. 5 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Psychology Club will present PTSD, Depression and Suicide with Clint Malarchuk on Thursday, Nov. 8 on the Carson City campus. Malarchuk, a former National Hockey League goaltender who nearly died during a game when a skate blade slashed his jugular vein, will speak from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in WNC Reynolds Building 103. Malarchuk, now a mental health advocate who lives on a ranch in Gardnerville, will share the life-threatening mental issues he’s overcome during his adult life.

Meet The Author: Teri Case at Brewery Arts Cafe in Carson City. 5:15 p.m. Teri Case, award winning author of “Tiger Drive” will be at the Brewery Arts Cafe at 449 King Street beginning at 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 8. Teri grew up in Carson City and attended our schools here. She lived on Tiger Drive and her book is about a fictionalized family coping with many different personalities. Come by and meet Teri as she conducts a question and answer session.

Fourth annual Pets of the Homeless fundraiser presented by Carpa Nevada, LLC and Downtown Coin, 111 W. Telegraph Street in Carson City. Carpa Nevada is donated all of the profits from the sales of its fine Portuguese olive oils and balsamic vinegar to Pets of the Homeless now through Jan. 31, 2019. Patricia Ann Probst: An Artist of the Movement. 11 to 6 p.m. The Charlie B Gallery is proud to announce the coming of a ceramic celebration art show and sale: “Patricia Ann Probst: An Artist of the Movement.” The gallery will offer many works created by Patricia Ann Probst (1941-2016). A sale will continue through December 2, 2018. 114 West Telegraph.

— Veterans Outreach Center Clothing Donation Drive, Nov. 4-11, at the Western Nevada College Veterans Resource Center, third floor of the Cedar Building, as well as on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, first floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union, second floor of the Knowledge Center, and second floor of the Pennington Student Achievement Center. Accepting donations of underwear, gloves, socks, toilet paper and reading glasses.

Christmas tree permits available on Carson, Bridgeport ranger districts. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Thursday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating. Christmas tree permits must be purchased in person and are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis for $10 each, with a limit of two trees per household. Permits are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and only valid through Dec. 25, 2018. The Ranger Districts have a limited amount of Christmas tree permits available, and once those allotted permits are sold, no more will be available.

— The Nevada Artists Association (NAA) presents the annual Nevada Day Art Show, now through Nov. 30. Entries in all categories are judged with cash prizes awarded to winners. The NAA Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently seeking individuals and pairs interested in leading interpretive programs in one of our many parks and open spaces. Interested individuals and pairs are encouraged to apply. If interested, go here.

— Nature’s art is in full bloom at the Bristlecone Gallery for the “Nature’s Symphony of Art” children’s showcase sponsored by Arts for Children of Nevada with help from the Jackpot Grant with the Nevada Arts Council. Exhibit runs until until Nov. 9.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. Depio graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. He lives in Las Vegas with his family. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project.
